100% Literacy For All
About us
At Indy Reads, our mission is to build the literacy, English language, and job readiness skills to empower adults and their families to reach their full potential. Our vision is 100% literacy for all. Indy Reads uses a Community Classrooms model and community events in our bookstore to advance equity through literacy. Our ELL, HSE, and workforce development programs are available virtually, on-site in Fountain Square, and in Community Classrooms throughout Indianapolis at no cost to students. Your support and involvement is crucial to the success of our organization. Here are some of the ways you can get involved: Shop: In November 2021, we opened Indy Reads in Fountain Square. We sell new and used books for adults and children and run pay-what-you-can events for the community. The profits from the bookstore go directly toward improving literacy in our community through Indy Reads. The bookstore has several full and part time staff members, but it could not survive without the help our volunteers. Volunteer: Our organization would not be successful without the unwavering support of our volunteers. With the various programs we offer, there is sure to be a good fit for you. Visit our website to see how you can register to volunteer. Donate: We understand that not everyone has time to volunteer. Your financial support is also crucial in helping us realize our vision of 100% literacy for all. Become a member of our Literacy League as a recurring donor or make a one-time donation at indyreads.org/donate.

Join Gya Torres for the Indy Reads Book Club on Sunday, August 30 from 2–3 pm! 📚 This month, we’re reading Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler. Fifteen-year-old Lauren Olamina lives in a gated community shielded from a collapsing society devastated by climate change and economic crisis. Gifted and burdened with hyperempathy, she feels others’ pain as her own. As danger closes in and her community ignores the warning signs, Lauren must fight to protect those she loves. Her struggle for survival ultimately sparks a new faith and a powerful vision for humanity’s future. Join us for great books and even better conversation!

Our classrooms are a reflection of the incredible diversity of the Indy Reads community. 🌎📚 This year, we served 594 students from 58 different countries, speaking 49 languages, through our English Language Learning Program. Every student brings their own experiences, knowledge, and goals to the classroom, and we're proud to support them as they build skills and create new opportunities. 💙

We had a great day together at our Indy Reads Board Retreat! 💙 Thank you to Chrystal with Soaring Owl Advisory for leading an engaging session on Board Essentials and to our Chief Advancement Officer for sharing more about the important role board engagement plays in supporting Indy Reads. We also spent time in committee groups discussing our newly adopted Strategic Plan and the goals that will help move our work forward this year. We're grateful for the time, thoughtfulness, and commitment our board brings to Indy Reads, and especially enjoyed gathering in person at one of our classroom partner locations, Southeast Community Services!
