Born 108 years ago today, Katherine Johnson used her mathematical expertise to help make some of America’s most ambitious spaceflight milestones possible. Her calculations contributed to Alan Shepard’s first US human spaceflight, John Glenn’s historic orbit of Earth and subsequent missions, including Apollo 11. In 2019, IEEE awarded Johnson with the IEEE President’s Award for her fundamental computational contributions to the success of America’s manned spaceflights.

The IBM 5150 Personal Computer came equipped with 16 KB of RAM and 5 MHz of processing power. Today, most of us are working with 16GB (or more) instead of 16KB, but this slow-but-mighty machine was revolutionary when it was released in 1981. IBM’s first-ever publicly available PC brought computing out of specialized environments and into more offices, homes and classrooms. Its open architecture also paved the way for other companies to develop software, peripherals and compatible machines around it. Soon after launch, this PC proved to be a resounding success, with over a million units sold within three years.
