Emergency departments are under pressure, but they’re also sending a message. Long wait times and repeat visits point to gaps in how health, social, and public services connect. Unite Us highlights how communities that close the loop, aligning partners and tracking outcomes, are reducing preventable ED visits and improving results. 1 in 4 adults is a caregiver. Is your organization supporting them? The data is in, and it’s a wake-up call for local government leaders. Between 2015 and 2025, the number of Americans providing care to loved ones, usually unpaid, jumped by 45%. Today, 63 million people are balancing their professional roles with the demands of caregiving; impacting productivity, mental health, and retention within our own municipal workforces. ICMA, in partnership with the NASHP | National Academy for State Health Policy and The John A. Hartford Foundation, recently conducted a national survey to see how local governments are responding. The 2026 Local Government Support for Family Caregiving Survey Summary is now available as a free resource. It offers insights into how we can leverage our roles as employers and policymakers to support the people who care for our communities. What can the 1770s teach today’s local leaders? More than you might think. At the Williamsburg Leadership Institute, ICMA - International City/County Management Association members stepped into history to examine leadership during moments of uncertainty, division, and change, and drew clear parallels to the challenges facing communities today. They left with more than perspective, they gained practical insight to lead with clarity, navigate complexity, and strengthen trust in the communities they serve.

On March 4, 2026, ICMA joined a broad coalition of public safety and local government associations to establish shared principles for a unified framework for the future of public safety cooperation. This convening, led by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) resulted in the Shared Principles of Agreement, a consensus-based document designed to improve intergovernmental coordination and ensure predictable operations across all levels of government. https://bit.ly/4m5Y7Az ASSOCIATION OF STATE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIVE AGENCIES CALEA Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association National Fraternal Order of Police HAPCOA National International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators International Association of Chiefs of Police Major Cities Chiefs Association Major County Sheriffs of America National District Attorneys Association National League of Cities NOBLE - National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives Police Executive Research Forum Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executives Association United States Conference of Mayors

ICMA has partnered with the Army for several years to implement the City/County Management Senior Fellowship Program (CMSFP), connecting Deputy Garrison Commanders and other senior civilian leaders from the U.S. Army to ICMA members who are leading communities across the nation. The CMSFP orientation was held March 25-26 in Arlington VA. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge, expertise, and ideas; to examine similarities and differences about how our Army installations and local governments are managed; and to explore ways they can work together to create safer, more prosperous communities. Special thanks to ICMA members Fred Meurer and Lance O'Bryan for lending their expertise and to our partners at the U.S. Army – Martha Bowers, Angelique S. and Calvin Williams MS, PMP, ARM,CDPM III. Finally, we would like to recognize and thank our members and their communities for hosting the Army Fellows! Thanks to Dr. Jennifer Blalock, Savannah, Georgia; Henry Arredondo, Alpine, Texas; Matthew Chidester (ICMA-CM), Half Moon Bay, CA; Andres Orozco, Palo Alto, CA; Alex Tachiki, Monrovia, CA; Mike Sargis, North Fort Lauderdale; Annamarie Reno, Mascotte, FL; Christopher Dwight, Monterey, CA; David Green, Grand Rapids, MI; Dalton Rice, Kerrville, TX; Bill Bell, Montrose, CO; Crystal Yates-Gale, Philadelphia, PA; Autumn Monahan, Issaquah, WA; Shayla Lee, Sugarland, TX; Tom Joyce, Minot, ND; and Jennifer Callaway, Truckee, CA.
