Hatcheries help conserve and rebuild vulnerable Pacific salmon populations while supporting the social, cultural and economic well-being of the communities that depend on them. HDR is proud to support Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada and the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation in advancing these conservation and stewardship efforts through design, permitting and construction services for the Upper Fraser Salmon Conservation Hatchery in Prince George. Today, Minister Thompson announced that general construction contracts have been awarded for three new Pacific salmon conservation hatcheries in British Columbia. These hatcheries will support conservation and rebuilding efforts for Pacific salmon stocks of concern. The Upper Fraser River Salmon Conservation Hatchery, located on the Nechako River, will be collaboratively managed with the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation and will raise Chinook salmon. The Wilp’Ho Dix Hatchery, located on the Kitwanga River, will be operated in partnership with the Gitanyow First Nation and will raise Skeena sockeye. The Tŝilhqot’in Salmon Conservation Hatchery in Tŝilhqot’in Territory will be operated by the Tsilhqot'in National Government will be used to rebuild Chinook salmon populations in the Chilcotin River watershed. The construction and equipment for all three hatcheries are funded by a one-time capital investment under the first phase of Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI). Once a major infrastructure program is approved, there is often tremendous pressure to get moving. But moving directly from program definition into delivery without first establishing the right foundation can create unnecessary risk, inefficiency and rework. Program initiation is the bridge to successful infrastructure delivery. This is where utilities translate strategic intent into a practical delivery framework by establishing the organizational structure, governance, processes, tools, partnerships and implementation roadmap needed to create a disciplined and effective delivery environment. The goal is to prepare the organization to deliver efficiently and effectively. A thoughtful initiation process establishes the structure to control and guide program delivery while providing the flexibility needed to manage uncertainty, respond to change, and improve performance throughout the program's life. Meet Susmita Kabir, senior civil engineer in Melbourne, Victoria. As the daughter of two engineers, Susmita always enjoyed seeing her work along the roads and rails of the city, but it’s the impact her designs have on the community that keeps her rolling. “I have a foundation in civil engineering, but my dad and I are both transport engineers. He’s always emphasized that to build a civilization, you first need to build the road to get there. That is the connection point. That is the heart of what keeps life moving back and forth and makes me to feel connected to my work.” Joining HDR earlier this year, she started a new chapter that brings together her leadership skills, design expertise, and excitement for the future. “I'm really passionate about building team and office culture.
