Don’t miss tomorrow’s session featuring Falcon’s Rob Huxtable. Our team is looking forward to a great discussion on commercial leadership in private equity-backed companies.

Excited to moderate this session this Wednesday at the PEI Human Capital Forum. Commercial leadership searches are among the most persistent recruiting challenges for PE-backed companies, and the pressure is only mounting. Bain's annual PE report makes the math plain: due to multiple compression and leverage constraints, what used to require 5% annual EBITDA growth to deliver a 2.5X now requires 12%. Knowing M&A will absorb some of that burden, our sponsor clients tell us they need to figure out how to drive portfolio company growth of 7 to 9% organically going forward. A slow year in tech, a much bigger lift for the broader market. To help diagnose the underlying issues, FALCON and PrivateEquityCXO ran a sentiment analysis of 245 sitting portfolio company executives across the C-suite. Among several findings, the data confirmed what most sponsors already feel: the mean effectiveness rating for commercial functions across active PE-backed companies is 3.1 out of 5. Only 8% rated their commercial function best-in-class. And the data shows the burden is shared. The issues do not sit solely at the commercial leader's feet. It is a management team and sponsor challenge. That calls for a management team and sponsor solution, paired with a fantastic commercial hire. Looking forward to a candid conversation with Kate Griffin, Katie Kitchen (Mackin) and Pete Winningham on what top-quartile talent teams are doing differently to profile, find, assess, and land the right leaders for these high stakes roles. For anyone interested in our proprietary sentiment analysis, pls DM, text or email me.

PE-backed executives: No matter your function, this is your chance to weigh in on how the commercial engine really runs in portfolio companies. Your anonymous responses will help surface the dynamics that rarely get discussed in boardrooms, informing how sponsors and portfolio companies approach commercial leadership. Results will be presented at the PEI Talent Partners Forum and published in summary form for participants. Thank you for sharing your perspective. #PrivateEquity #RevenueGrowth #CommercialGrowth #ValueCreation

Organic growth is the lever everyone wants to pull for their portfolio company.  It drives the investment thesis. It shapes management bonuses and equity outcomes. It determines whether sponsors deliver returns to LPs. But in many portfolio companies, growth doesn’t materialize according to plan. Commercial leaders are hired with high expectations that can prove difficult to deliver, while leadership teams across functions often struggle to stay aligned on mandate, resources, and execution. So we’re asking portfolio company executives directly. If you’re a PE-backed leader, tell us what you’ve actually experienced when it comes to commercial leadership. Your anonymous responses will help surface the dynamics that rarely get discussed in boardrooms.  We’ll share the findings with the PrivateEquityCXO community and present them at the PEI Talent Partners Forum. Take 10 minutes and add your perspective. Survey link in the comments.  #PrivateEquity #CommercialGrowth #ValueCreation

Where do PE-backed CEOs truly excel – and where do they fall short? Portco executives weighed in: 🔸 51% said the most essential skill a CEO can have is driving value creation initiatives throughout the hold period. Only 7% pointed to maximizing operational efficiency. 🔸 33% believed CEOs stumble most when balancing company leadership with sponsor priorities, followed by keeping pace with PE’s intensity (28.2%). 🔸 Alignment is a problem: just 27% of executive teams reported being “very aligned” with their CEO. Cross-functional silos and poor communication were identified as the top culprits. What this means for you: 💡 Sponsors: Pressure-test CEO durability early. Extended holds magnify the need for consistent value creation skills. Push for alignment across the leadership team and watch for communication blind spots. Note that only 34% of CEOs are “very open” to feedback; defensiveness at the top can cascade throughout a company. 💡 Executives: Whether you’re a CEO or part of the leadership team, align early and often on strategy, priorities, and sponsor expectations. Seek and share candid feedback, and address friction points like goal overpromising or lack of transparency before they derail execution. Initial calls with candidates are more than a pitch. They’re our chance to build trust with candidates and understand whether the right fit is there. 🔸 We start every conversation by meeting candidates where they are, not where we want them to be. We ask about their current goals and timing first.  🔸 Many candidates assume recruiters are transactional. We counter that perception by showing that our goal is long-term fit, not short-term gain. Rob Huxtable, Partner at Falcon, shares how we approach these initial calls while navigating candidate needs: #PrivateEquity #ExecutiveSearch #Recruiting #TalentStrategy #Hiring
