The real AI question for PI firms isn’t whether you can access a leading foundation model. It’s what it takes to turn that model into something your firm can actually rely on. Anthropic’s new EvenUp case study gives a rare look at exactly that. Claude for Business provides important reasoning and long-context capabilities. But access to the model is only the starting point. EvenUp’s engineering teams have built the PI-specific data, document processing, citations, verification, model routing, specialized workflows, quality systems, and infrastructure required to make those capabilities dependable across hundreds of thousands of cases. That’s where build vs. buy gets real. For PI firms, building this internally means far more than licensing a model or hiring a few engineers. It means ongoing investment in security, model evaluation, workflow design, data quality, monitoring, maintenance, and adapting as models and regulations evolve, all while handling cases that can span thousands of pages where accuracy directly impacts case value. Firms can increasingly access leading AI models directly. What’s much harder, and much more expensive, is building and maintaining the full system around them so they perform reliably and securely at scale. Accuracy in legal AI starts long before a model ever reaches a customer. At EvenUp, we’ve built an agentic AI framework that helps create higher-quality ground truth data, the benchmark we use to evaluate and improve our AI systems. The approach adds an AI audit agent between preliminary labeling and expert human review, checking labels against source records and surfacing cited discrepancies for reviewers to evaluate. In measured review workflows, that approach increased labeling productivity by roughly 10x while improving labeling precision by 15%. It’s one example of the work happening behind the scenes to build AI that can support complex, high-stakes personal injury workflows with greater rigor and accuracy. Two years ago, EvenUp was about a tenth of the size it is today - fewer people, fewer products, fewer customers, and still very early in what we were building. Two weeks ago, I was back in Montreal for our company offsite, in the same city where I met Saam 16 years ago (Raymond came a few years later). Our theme was “The Next 10x.” Looking around the room at 600+ people, more than half of whom joined in the last year, it was hard not to think about how far we’ve come. But what mattered more was what all that growth has allowed us to do. Every case we touch begins with one of the worst days of someone’s life. Last year, a man I’ll call John was hit by a truck. He suffered 35 life-threatening injuries, spent months in the hospital, and accumulated more than $1M in medical bills. His firm used EvenUp, and his case ultimately settled for $10M without litigation. The number isn’t what stayed with me. It’s the time. It’s that we helped give John years of his life back instead of spending them fighting through the court system. That’s why we’re here. And every outcome like John’s is made possible by people across EvenUp (engineers, designers, operations, salespeople, and so many others) many of whom were together in that Montreal ballroom. To everyone who has helped get us here: thank you. We’ve grown 10x before, but there are still millions of people like John waiting on a system that moves too slowly for them.
