Solar power is a critical solution to North Carolina’s energy challenges — producing clean, affordable electricity right in the communities we call home. Schools present a great opportunity for North Carolina to boost its production of clean solar power while improving the resilience of our communities. Our new analysis with Environment North Carolina Research & Policy Center estimates that North Carolina public schools could host more than 900 megawatts (MW) of solar energy capacity and produce 1.6 terawatt-hours of electricity from those panels in their first year after installation. The benefits would be enormous. Solar panels on the rooftops of roughly 2,400 of North Carolina’s public schools could produce enough electricity to power almost 150,000 typical homes each year, while reducing climate-warming carbon dioxide pollution by as much as taking almost 280,000 cars off the road for a year, and cutting nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide pollution that puts kids’ health at risk. Some of Americans’ favorite places to immerse themselves in nature are facing imminent danger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday that its U.S. Forest Service has filed a proposal to roll back protections against logging, road-building and other industry in nearly 45 million acres of “inventoried roadless areas.” These are wild forests protected by the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. 📣 BREAKING: Governor Walz just issued an order to block all mining in the Boundary Waters. Our nation’s most-visited wilderness area has been under threat of toxic pollution since Congress lifted a 20-year ban on mining in the area last spring. We’ve spent decades working to defend the Boundary Waters, including going door to door in Minnesota gathering support, and sending thousands of messages to legislators with a simple message: This lush, beautiful wilderness is worth so much more than the materials we can extract from it. Now, we’re thrilled to share that our voices were heard. Governor Walz’s executive order will delay any prospect of nickel and copper mining in the Boundary Waters. This is a major step in the right direction – but we’re not stopping here. We’ll keep working until the Boundary Waters are fully and permanently protected under the law.
