🌍 Climate change is changing Europe’s mycotoxin risk map. European Environment Agency briefing highlights an important challenge for our industry: as temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more frequent, mycotoxin contamination patterns are expected to shift across Europe. One striking finding: under a +2°C scenario, models predict increased aflatoxin contamination in maize, particularly in Spain, Italy and the Balkans. With greater warming, the risk could expand further north. The EEA also notes that 14% of adults studied across six European countries showed DON exposure above a health-based guidance value. 🌾 For the grain and feed industry, the message is clear: historical assumptions about where mycotoxins occur may no longer be enough. 🚨 EU mycotoxin guidance is changing. Feed operators should start preparing now. The European Commission has adopted Recommendation (EU) 2026/1801, updating reference values for key mycotoxins in animal feed, including DON, zearalenone, ochratoxin A, T-2/HT-2 toxins and fumonisins B1+B2. One particularly important development: the new framework places greater emphasis on simultaneous multi-mycotoxin monitoring, reflecting the reality that mycotoxins frequently occur together. Feed operators will also need to integrate the updated reference values into their HACCP-based risk management systems. 📅 General implementation: 1 July 2027 🌽 Higher-risk commodities including maize, sorghum, soybeans and sunflower: 1 October 2027. For the feed industry, the message is clear: monitoring strategies need to evolve from reactive testing toward proactive, risk-based screening.
