Yesterday marks a milestone a decade in the making. On 3/18/26, we officially broke ground on our new Educator Workforce Housing project! For three years running, Santa Cruz has had the most expensive rental market in the nation, and we’ve seen too many talented teachers leave because they couldn't afford to live in the community they serve. Today, we stopped just talking about the housing crisis and started building the solution. This project is a testament to the power of community. A huge thank you to the voters who supported Measures K & L, our dedicated Board of Trustees, the City of Santa Cruz, and our incredible partners at Bogard Construction, EHDD, and Studio Vara. We are building more than apartments; we are building stability for our schools and a future where our educators can truly thrive.

Affordable, high-quality housing for educators isn't just about retention; it's about investing in the people who shape our community's future. When teachers can afford to live where they teach, everyone benefits. I'd always found the formal, tiered configuration of the boardroom in The American Institute of Architects (AIA) HQ intimidating. Now that boardroom and much of the 1973 building interior has been refreshed in the newly opened AIA Global Campus of Architecture & Design, an exemplar of modern workplace design and environmental stewardship. For AIA Architect, I cover the inclusive workplace design strategies implemented by EHDD, with Hartman-Cox Architects, Hood Design Studio, Point Energy Innovations, and Turner Construction Company. (A forthcoming article will look at building performance.)
