What types of skills are students in higher education prioritizing above others? Recent data indicates there’s been a shift! The new 2026 EDUCAUSE Students and Technology Report: Steady through Change reveals that the importance of skills such as strategic thinking and decision-making and leadership might indicate that students anticipate complex roles that will require them to navigate complexity, collaborate effectively, and make sound decisions in changing and somewhat unpredictable environments. However, students did not prioritize technological competencies—small proportions of students felt that AI-powered tools and technologies (12%) and non-AI emerging technologies (1%) would be most important for their career success. https://buff.ly/Ua7SXXV

When it comes to workforce preparation, a low proportion of students view AI skills as important for their careers. Surprising? In the new 2026 EDUCAUSE Students and Technology Report: Steady through Change, findings show students generally do not prioritize using AI tools for work (e.g., chatbots, data analysis, automation), with only 22% selecting this as a critical technological skill for their future careers. In fact, only 14% expected to use AI tools to a great extent in their workplace, while a third of students said to some extent (33%), 30% said not at all, and almost a quarter (23%) said they did not know. https://buff.ly/Ua7SXXV
