Help us #DeleteBloodCancer by learning more about the stem cell registry!

About us

DKMS is an international nonprofit where creativity, initiative, compassion, collaboration and strategic thinking are rewarded as we work together to expand our reach, recruit more bone marrow donors and help save more lives. Following the establishment of DKMS, our German predecessor, we were founded in 2004 in the U.S. as DKMS Americas, and since renamed DKMS. With the firm belief that people everywhere can play an active role in saving the lives of others with blood cancers and blood and bone marrow disorders, our mission is to grow the number of suitable bone marrow and blood stem cell donors for patients in need of a transplant. Today, DKMS is comprised of nearly 100 passionate employees and thousands of volunteers who work tirelessly toward a common goal of facilitating successful donations. Many of our employees have personally seen the urgent need for a vast and diverse donor registry, giving the organization an unmatched level of energy, creativity and dedication. DKMS is part of the world’s largest network of bone marrow donor centers, having registered more than 6 million people. Currently, nearly 56,000 those have gone on to donate to a patient.

  • Cameron joined the stem cell registry at a Charlotte Fire Department donor drive in 2014. Years later, he received an email saying he might be a match. At first, he thought it was spam. But after learning more, Cameron realized he had the chance to give someone a second chance at life. Even more meaningful: he ended up donating at the same hospital where his mother had been treated for lymphoma years earlier. “In that moment I knew I wasn’t backing out. It was meant to be.” Today, Cameron is proud to have helped someone in the fight against blood cancer. “It’s just the right thing to do.” You could be someone’s match too.

  • 📞 Deven almost didn’t answer the call. She was at work when a number she didn’t recognize popped up on her phone. Normally, she would have ignored it, but something told her to pick up. On the other end was DKMS with incredible news: she was a stem cell match for a patient with blood cancer. “It took my breath away,” Deven said. “To know you can help save a life is a huge honor.” Years earlier, she had joined the registry at her daughter’s school, never knowing if she’d ever get the call. Now, her stem cells are on their way to a 50-year-old patient in Spain. Her message to others: “Please register. It’s simple, it’s easy, and you could save a life.” 🔗 Join the registry today! #DKMS #StemCellDonation #YouCouldSaveALife

  • Meet Paul Hill 💙 Paul is 49 and from Sparrows Point, MD. He spent the last 20 years working as a local tractor-trailer driver. When he is not on the road, he loves being out on the water fishing, crabbing, or cruising with friends and family. After being diagnosed with AML, Paul is now navigating a new journey. He wants to raise awareness about cancer and remind others going through a similar experience that they are not alone. His community has rallied around him and will host a Bull & Oyster Roast Fundraiser in his honor on April 11th. Stories like Paul’s remind us why community, awareness, and support matter so much. 💙 #AML #BloodCancerAwareness #DKMS #CommunitySupport

  • After 17 year old Broeden was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), his family quickly mobilized their community to host a donor drive and raise awareness about the importance of joining the stem cell registry. During the event, Broeden’s mom and aunt shared how their lives changed overnight and why expanding the registry is critical for patients searching for a lifesaving donor. Joining the registry only takes a few minutes and involves a simple cheek swab, yet it can provide hope to patients like Broeden and thousands of others facing blood cancers and blood disorders. 🧬❤️ Every new person who registers increases the chances that a patient will find their match.

  • This event was a patient donor drive for Broeden, a 17-year-old currently searching for a lifesaving stem cell match. ❤️ During the drive, volunteers helped community members join the DKMS stem cell registry in just a few minutes. Participants scanned a QR code 📱, completed a short form, and provided a simple cheek swab sample 🧬. While the process takes less than 10 minutes, the impact can be life-changing. For patients like Broeden, finding a compatible stem cell donor can be extremely difficult because genetic matches are highly specific, often compared to finding a needle in a haystack. Every new person who joins the registry helps increase the chances that patients like Broeden will find their lifesaving match.
