About us

Owners John and Jennifer Garrett launched the first edition of Community Impact in 2005 with three full-time employees covering Round Rock and Pflugerville. Now, Community Impact distributes hyperlocal news and information to millions of local residents and business owners each day online and monthly by mail. CI is vested in the communities we serve and has dedicated reporters in each community who attend city council and school board meetings. We are among the first to report on local business, transportation, education and health care. Our staff serve on chamber boards, volunteer with nonprofits and are involved in our communities to make them a better place to live and work.

Today, local newsrooms can finally compete with the legacy giants on technology — and Community Impact is all-in. ✅ Every story mapped ✅ Redeem local coupons ✅ Chat directly with our newsroom ✅ Clean, modern redesign ✅ No paywall We reimagined the local newspaper in 2005. This July, we’re reimagining the local news digital experience. #Grateful

  • Allen and McKinney just launched 121 North, a joint initiative branding their shared SH 121 corridor as a premier destination for business and entertainment in North Texas. With 20+ projects in the works (a surf lagoon, a 20,000-seat amphitheater, a $950M Kalahari resort, and millions of sq. ft. of office and mixed-use space), the corridor is one of the most active development stretches in the country right now. The bigger story: two cities chose to treat a shared highway as a regional asset instead of a boundary line — something officials say is key to attracting businesses looking at the broader North Texas region. Full breakdown of what's planned and who's building it in the link below. https://bit.ly/4o5CHEA

  • It's officially time to say goodbye to our two spring interns from the Innovation Center, and we couldn't let them go without a proper sendoff. Brett Hyman joined us as our very first Data Intern, supporting our development team in data research and AI projects. She set the bar high to say the least! Congratulations to Brett on her graduation from UT's McCombs with her Masters in Marketing, we are so excited to watch her do great things in her next chapter. Mollie Garrett served as our Audience Intern, showcasing her talents across social media, newsletters, and events to help grow CI's reach across Texas. She also holds the title of John Garrett's favorite intern ever (but she is his daughter, so that may be a little biased 😉). Congratulations to Mollie on her upcoming graduation from UT's School of Journalism this weekend! We are so proud of both of these women and excited to cheer them on in everything ahead. Hook 'em! 🤘

  • The past month was a busy one! Our team showed up across Texas and we have the photos to prove it. This month: Impacters hit the greens at chamber golf tournaments to connect with CI readers and advertisers; the Allen team cut the ribbon on their official launch; and Tomball's mayor and city council recognized Nichaela Shaheen, CI's Houston Reporter of the Year, for her work covering their community. ⛳🏅 Swipe through to see what our people have been up to and tag a teammate who deserves a shoutout. #CommunityImpact #LocalNews

  • Our founder and CEO, John Garrett, took the main stage at the America's Newspapers #2026MegaConf yesterday. His message was simple: go back to the basics. ✅ Help people connect to their communities. ✅ Empower local businesses. ✅ Be real. You can't fake it. Values aren't just words on a wall at Community Impact — they're the foundation everything we do is built on. Thank you to America's Newspapers for the opportunity, and to everyone who shared kind words after the session. Long live local news! #LocalNews #CommunityImpact #2026MegaConf

  • 📧 40+ newsletters. A lean team. Keeping it all hyperlocal. beehiiv just dropped a case study on how we run our daily newsletters across Texas while maintaining strong editorial standards and clean, engaged lists. “If a local publisher is concerned that moving to a daily digital format or incorporating automation will dilute their journalistic standards, we’ve found the opposite to be true. By using beehiiv’s technology and our own custom automation, we have actually protected our integrity.” — Marie Leonard, Vice President of Digital at Community Impact 🔗 Worth a read if you’re building or expanding a newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gftHJCfs

  • If your happy place is out at a local coffee shop meeting a business owner, rather than staring at a spreadsheet in a cubicle, we should talk. We’re Hiring! Community Impact is looking for three new Account Executives to join the teams in Northeast San Antonio, Prosper & Celina, and Bryan-College Station. This is more than just a sales role, it’s being the person who helps the new bakery down the street finally get the word out. It’s being the face of CI and helping local businesses move the needle. It’s fast paced, it’s social, and it’s where you need to be. Apply today!  Email: recruiting@communityimpact.com
