The hottest senior leadership role right now? Chief Communications Officer. The CCO role is one of the fastest-growing in the C-suite. Among Fortune 1000 companies, the scope of the role has 10x’d in recent years - with CCOs increasingly absorbing other corporate functions like marketing, HR, ESG, and investor relations. Companies are rapidly hiring & promoting CCOs - and nearly 50% of CCOs now report directly to the CEO.   Within the past six months: - State Farm hired Michelle R. as its first-ever CCO - McDonald's hired Anne Hammer as Global CCO - Netflix appointed Dani Dudeck as CCO - Cisco named Steve Clayton as CCO - Merck promoted Johanna Herrmann to CCO - The Cigna Group promoted Melissa S. to CMCO - Mastercard appointed Jill Kramer as CMCO - Intel appointed Annie Shea Weckesser as CMCO For a long time, comms was the clean-up crew - called in AFTER things went sideways (and sent home when the fire was out). That’s changing. Enterprises are seeing that communications drives revenue, shapes market perception, and determines whether you attract the best talent to work for you. That’s why they’re building world-class comms teams - with a CCO at the helm.

The most valuable hour in a comms pro's day used to be wasted on tasks that AI can now do *instantly* How comms teams started their morning in the 2010s: 6 AM: Drink coffee #1 7 AM: Open Google Alerts  7:15 AM: Scroll 20 browser tabs 8:30 AM: Manually compile briefing 9:30 AM: Send the briefing (30 minutes late) 10:00 AM: Start the actual job How AI-forward comms teams start their morning in 2026 (using Clipbook): 6 AM: Drink coffee #1 (some things never change) 7 AM: Clipbook AI agent delivers a fully curated briefing in your inbox (1M+ sources scanned, real-time) 7:15 AM: Done reading the briefing. Make a few edits, send it to your boss.  7:30 AM: Already acting on the intelligence: flagging a press opportunity, turning a positive story into a social post, getting ahead of a negative article. 8:30 AM onwards: Agent provides real-time & continuous business intelligence. 8:31 AM: Do the strategic work you were hired to do. This is what the job looks like *right now* for the best comms teams in the world.

Here is the 5-step formula top communications leaders use to get executive buy-in: Russell Dubner is Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s first-ever Chief Communications Officer. He recently joined our Clipbook webinar and shared the approach he recommends that CCOs use when presenting to the the CEO: 1. Start with the fact base. What data have you gathered & what pattern does it reveal? 2. Define the decision framework. Not just what you're deciding, but how you're thinking about it. What are the variables? What are you optimizing for? 3. Present the trade-offs & potential courses of action. Every option has a cost. Name them before someone else does. 4. Make a clear recommendation. CEOs are busy. Don’t just present options. Bring a strong POV. 5. Outline the timeline & success metrics. How does this unfold? Over what period? What would winning look like? If you can't answer that - you're not ready. Doesn’t need to be long. You can move through it quickly. But make sure you hit every point. Check out the full webinar for more of Russell’s insights on how to lead as a CCO in the AI era: https://lnkd.in/dyviBTeF

In the coming months, we will see the rise of the “comms engineer”. Just like GTM teams have embraced the “GTM Engineer”, comms and PR functions are next. The comms engineer isn’t a traditional PR pro. And they’re not a software developer. They sit at the intersection of both. Their job: build the systems & workflows & tooling that let communicators move faster and operate more strategically. I talk to dozens of leading comms and PR teams every week. The top performers are already doing this. What does it look like in practice? ➡️ Building AI workflows for rapid response and crisis prep ➡️ Turning raw data into C-suite intelligence ➡️ Integrating comms tooling with broader marketing and business stacks ➡️ Automating core workflows with Clipbook The best teams are pairing strong editorial judgment with serious technical infrastructure. Relationships and instincts still matter. But they’re not enough anymore. The functions that invest in this capability early will build an unfair advantage. Faster insights. Better decisions. More impact. The comms engineer is coming. The only question is which teams will build this muscle first.

  • AI. Media fragmentation. A more complex attention economy. All of these shifts are reshaping the Chief Communications Officer role. On March 26, we’re hosting Russell Dubner, Boston Consulting Group (BCG)'s Global CCO, for a conversation on how communications leaders can navigate this new era. We’ll discuss: → The expanding role of the CCO → The biggest shifts influencing the communications function → How top comms teams are approaching AI transformation Save your spot 👇
