  • The City of Gastonia is proud to announce that Brad Best has been promoted and will serve as the City’s next Fire Chief, effective May 1, 2026, following the retirement of Phil Welch. Chief Best brings more than 30 years of fire service experience, having served in numerous roles within the Gastonia Fire Department, including Firefighter, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, and most recently, Deputy Chief. His career began right here in Gaston County, and his leadership reflects a lifelong commitment to protecting the community he calls home. “It is an honor to serve as Fire Chief in the community that helped shape who I am,” said Chief Best. “I look forward to continuing our mission to protect and serve with pride.” We also extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Welch for his many years of dedicated service and leadership since 2009.
