This space would provide residents with a safe indoor environment to cool down during extreme temperatures. The City of Gastonia is proud to announce that Brad Best has been promoted and will serve as the City’s next Fire Chief, effective May 1, 2026, following the retirement of Phil Welch. Chief Best brings more than 30 years of fire service experience, having served in numerous roles within the Gastonia Fire Department, including Firefighter, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, and most recently, Deputy Chief. His career began right here in Gaston County, and his leadership reflects a lifelong commitment to protecting the community he calls home. “It is an honor to serve as Fire Chief in the community that helped shape who I am,” said Chief Best. “I look forward to continuing our mission to protect and serve with pride.” We also extend our sincere gratitude to Chief Welch for his many years of dedicated service and leadership since 2009. City of Gastonia offices will be closed on Friday, April 3 in observance of Good Friday. Service Updates: 🚌 GoGastonia will operate on a Saturday schedule 🗑️ Solid Waste services will not operate (Friday routes will be picked up on Monday) 🏛️ The Schiele Museum will be closed 🎯 Parks & Rec Skeet & Trap Range will be open Regular City services and office hours will resume on the next business day.
