Today was one of those rare, full-circle moments. I had the honor of attending a broadband “light up” event with the Bishop Paiute Tribe—an effort made possible in part by the historic investments in broadband infrastructure announced by Governor Gavin Newsom earlier today. Years ago, I had the privilege of working on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) and witnessing it signed into law by President Joe Biden. Alongside a brilliant group of colleagues across the White House and federal agencies, we worked to stand up and implement the nation’s broadband programs—laying the groundwork for investments like this. I also had the opportunity to work on permitting for middle-mile broadband infrastructure during my time in federal service, continued supporting these efforts at the California Government Operations Agency, and now carry that commitment forward at the California Public Utilities Commission. But today made it real. Seeing the infrastructure come online. Watching what it means for a community that has long been underserved. And yes—actually experiencing the internet speeds firsthand. I teared up. This is what public service is about - not abstract policy, not headlines, but tangible improvements in people’s lives. Access to education. Telehealth. Economic opportunity. Connection. I’m so grateful to everyone—at the federal, state, tribal, and local levels—who made this moment possible. And deeply committed to continuing this work so that every community, no matter how remote, has access to the opportunities broadband makes possible. #BroadbandForAll #DigitalEquity #Infrastructure #IIJA #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw

On Farmworkers Day we honor the many contributions of farmworkers to the state of California, propelling us to be the fourth largest economy in the world. Today I reflect on many of our leaders in the farmworker community, including Dolores Huerta who joined us for a CPUC Low Income Oversight Board meeting and former CPUC Commissioner Genevieve Shiroma, an engineer and farmworker‘s daughter who brought both her professional and lived experience to the CPUC to enhance utility service for rural and vulnerable communities across California. The California Public Utilities Commission is working diligently to bring access to broadband, clean water, safe rail systems, and electricity to our rural communities. Join us in this work. https://lnkd.in/g5srM5uU

Today we issued a proposal that directs California’s investor-owned electric and natural gas utilities to provide the California Climate Credit to customers during high electricity use months, when customers need relief the most - August and September for most electric customers and February for natural gas customers. The Climate Credit is a bill credit funded by the State’s greenhouse gas Cap-and-Invest Program. More info: https://bit.ly/4lQAcF2
