This Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, CDPH honors the diverse history and values of AANHPI communities. For generations, AANHPI communities have demonstrated innovation, resilience, hard work, connection and a sense of belonging. Marcus Prasad, an Accounting Officer within the Financial Management Branch, shares how his South Asian background continues to guide how he engages with local communities and global issues today. Marcus learned everyday practices like removing shoes before entering the home and showing respect to elders to reflect discipline and humility. Sikh values were also foundational teachings – seva (selfless service) and langar (free community meals open to all) were more than symbols and were, “expressions of equality and collective care.” These teachings went beyond the community and instilled in Marcus a responsibility to stand against injustice globally, including advocating for oppressed populations Today, he and others in South Asian communities have established strong economic foundations and community networks, with their success rooted in generations of sacrifice and collective resilience. Join in honoring Marcus and others that are part of the AANHPI community by sharing stories of their success and resilience and committing to equitable care.
