Coming from a tech-heavy background, I had to really reframe the way I think about hiring creative people. It's not capability. It's taste. That was the real differentiator. And that's the exact case I make every time I pitch a technology creative. A great example of this from a recent candidate showcase: clear experience, leadership backgrounds, shipped impressive work. But then the client started sharing examples of work they loved and it was a real quick indicator of the disconnect. Whether the candidate's instincts matched the client’s taste is such a harder thing to define. Taste is weird because it sounds subjective until you spend enough time around high performers. Then you realize the best creative people usually have an incredibly sharp internal filter for what feels right, what feels dated, and what actually resonates.
