When a wearable influences a health decision, the evidence behind it matters. A recent AMA and Medscape study of more than 2,200 physicians across six countries found a gap between the potential physicians see in wearable data and how often it is integrated into clinical practice. Building trust in that data will require stronger evidence, better tools for interpretation and workflows that make it practical to use in patient care. As wellness apps and devices play a greater role in health decisions, the standards supporting their claims need to keep pace. AI is entering the exam room. Do patients get a say? New Pew Research Center research highlighted by Fierce Healthcare found that 53% of U.S. adults feel they have little or no control over the use of AI in their healthcare, pointing to a growing challenge as AI becomes more common in medicine: Patients want transparency and a voice in how these tools are used in their care. The findings come as the AMA and Digital Medicine Society (DiMe) recently released a new framework defining the physician’s role in the digital and AI era, including an enduring responsibility to preserve trust through communication and shared decision-making. Independent physicians are on the front lines of patient care, and they’re already being asked to do more with less. A proposed CMS Modifier 25 policy would slash Medicare payment by 50% when a separate office or outpatient visit happens on the same day as most procedures.
