The event doesn't wait for you to be ready. That was the message from this session at AiDASH Evolve 2026, featuring Justin Winters, Sr. Incident Response Specialist at Entergy, Randy Lyle, Sr. Director, Wildfire Mitigation Practice at AiDASH, and Mason Withers, Director, Risk Mitigation, Wildfire Mitigation Practice at AiDASH, moderated by Shashank Shekhar, Managing Director and Partner at Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Winters brought the storm perspective, shaped by Hurricane Harvey and years of building Entergy's incident response framework across Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Randy and Mason brought the wildfire perspective, drawn from the Cedar Fire, SDG&E's 2007 fires, and decades of building programs across the country. One message came through clearly: effective major event preparedness is not built in the weeks before a storm or wildfire season. It is built year-round, through training, planning cycles, lessons learned, and operational protocols that are practiced long before they are needed. As Justin Winters put it: "Each year we've learned that prevention and preparing is not just right before an event — it's all year round. And it goes in a cycle with lessons learned." In the words of the wildfire mitigation experts: "Even if you can't do it perfectly now, get a start so you can begin to learn and build on that, and improve as time goes by." "Situational awareness is not just what is the weather doing. It is whether the fires are going on, are they encroaching into your service territory?" Preparedness, whether for a storm tracking toward the Gulf Coast or a wildfire approaching a service territory, is built long before the threat is on the horizon. Vegetation intelligence is too valuable to stay inside the vegetation team. That was the shared conviction from three leaders on stage at #AiDASHEvolve2026: Fletcher Johnson, Director, Vegetation Management at Xcel Energy,Bertram Stewart, Manager, Vegetation Strategy at National Grid, and Maria McInerney, Reliability Analytics Manager at Powerco. The panel was moderated by Isabella Espinel, Customer Success Lead at AiDASH. For National Grid: In 2020, National Grid's Massachusetts network posted a SAIDI of 301 minutes against a target of 144. After switching to condition-based vegetation management with AiDASH, the network recorded cumulative improvements of 22% in tree events, 29% in customers impacted, and 43% in customer minutes interrupted across FY2022–2025. As Bertram Stewart put it: "We are seeing remarkable improvements." For Xcel Energy: managing situational awareness across 50,000 miles of distribution and 20,000 miles of transmission had no consistent, non-biased method for cost forecasting and target-setting. Vegetation data is now informing capital planning decisions on where to reconductor, where to pursue targeted pole replacements, and where capitalized vegetation work makes sense alongside infrastructure investment. As Fletcher Johnson put it: "We have that aligned with our veg schedule, and we're seeing wins on that already." For Powerco: for every dollar spent on vegetation management, 98 cents was on reactive fault response, and more than 80% of vegetation-related faults came from trees outside its regulatory control. This IVMS span-level data became the foundation for advice published by New Zealand's Security Reliability Council, making the case for regulatory reform. As Maria McInerney said: "We wouldn't have been able to do that without the span-level data from IVMS." Across all three, one theme emerged: Vegetation intelligence becomes a true common thread when it is no longer a vegetation-team tool, but a shared resource embedded across the whole organization. You can’t mitigate every wildfire risk at once. So how do you decide where to act first? That question sits at the heart of Episode 4 of Before the Spark: A PreventionFirst Film. In the early days of utility wildfire mitigation, teams had no shortage of ideas. The challenge was knowing which actions mattered most – and where. The answer started with the map. Understand the terrain. Identify the fuels. Consider where fire could travel and what lies in its path. Overlay the utility network. Assess the health of the assets. Then use that understanding to prioritize mitigation where the consequences of an ignition could be greatest. As Mason Withers explains: “Resources are limited at utilities, and you have to decide which risks to act on. We created a risk model to prioritize which mitigations were the right ones to do, where to do them, and the order to do them in.” From more frequent inspections to system hardening and operational changes, risk mapping gave utilities a way to turn situational awareness into targeted action. I wanted to hold off on this post to give Abhishek Singh, Rahul Saxena, and the rest of AiDASH their well deserved time to shine as this acquisition was made public last Thursday. Of the coverage published since then, this article captures much of the potential we see in bringing our businesses together. That said, there is even more to the story than any single article can convey. A bit of perspective from behind the scenes: after more than a year of working closely with AiDASH through the diligence process, I have been most impressed by its people. This is an organization that combines deep technical capability, strong domain expertise, and a clear bias for action. Those qualities have shaped AiDASH's success, and they will add considerable strength to Schneider Electric Digital Grid and Schneider Electric more broadly. We are thrilled to welcome our new colleagues, learn from them, and build together. Strategically, this combination strengthens the intelligence, planning, and operational capabilities that utilities need to manage a more complex and dynamic grid.
