Emma Burleigh at Fortune reported on something worth sitting with. Goldman Sachs projects the U.S. power and grid sector will need about 500,000 more workers by 2030. Those jobs take three to four years of training, so the gap can't close quickly even if everyone tried. Emma’s potential solution: "autonomous equipment and human-like robots might have to step in to help lighten the load if worker supply can't keep up." The problem isn't too few jobs. It's too few people for the jobs that already exist. In manufacturing alone, more than a million roles are sitting unfilled right now. You don't automate that work to push people out. You automate it because the people aren't there and the work still has to get done. That's why we built Digit for materials handling first. Not the flashiest task on the floor, but one of the hardest to staff and one a warehouse can't run without. The demand is real, it's measurable, and it's growing. Anyone can build a robot that looks like a person. Building one that moves like a person—that makes contact with the world and keeps its balance when the floor drops away—is a much harder problem. And it's a hardware problem. That's the throughline of a Science Magazine / American Association for the Advancement of Science paper from our co-founder and Chief Robot Officer, Jonathan Hurst, "Physical AI is enabled by mechanical hardware." One line that stuck with us: "Looking back on some of today's humanoid robots with precise human dimensions or five-fingered hands will be akin to looking back at early heavier-than-air flying machine prototypes." We didn't understand the physics of flight then; we're at that stage with locomanipulation now. The payoff, Jonathan argues, is a future full of human-centric machines with familiar features but clear differences. We shared this when it published last week.
