Black Clover was a phenomenal shonen series with massive potential. Initially starting serialization in 2015 by Yuki Tabata in WSJ, the story grew tremendously in terms of popularity but, unfortunately, faced many hurdles due to the author's health, all the way up until its end recently, in May 2026. The long hiatuses due to the author’s health and the tough schedule pushed by Shueisha caused the author to leave out a lot of exciting lore from his final product.
With the rushed ending, Tabata had to let go of the backstory of the Spade Kingdom. Thankfully, we now have the full lore of this Kingdom, which includes the reveal of two powerful Demon Gods from the Zogratis Family. All of this was revealed in the new August 4, 2026 release, titled Perfect Grimoire — a guidebook that unveils the full mysteries of the Black Clover world. The reveal of these two new Demon Gods solidifies the greatest antagonists of the series with a history that goes back over 500 years.
Black Clover Perfect Grimoire Reveals The Zogratis Demon Gods From An Era 500 Years Ago
Black Clover ended its 11-year run on May 1, 2026, with the release of the final batch of chapters in Jump GIGA's Spring edition. These chapters saw Asta's ascension to Wizard King and the epilogue of the story; however, a lot remained unanswered even after this final batch of chapters. Notably, one thing that fans had long been curious about is the true origins of the Zogratis. The Zogratis are major antagonists in Black Clover, and we've always wanted to know more about them. Through Perfect Grimoire, we finally know more about them. Yuki Tabata went on to reveal their great origins in this guidebook, released on August 4, 2026.
The Zogratis were a group of people banished from their original lands, as they were known for devil-binding rituals. Due to their association with the devil, they had to leave, and they ended up in what is today known as the Spade Kingdom. Instead of just settling there, the Zogratis decided to conquer the land. The Zogratis ended up banishing the original people of the land and built their Kingdom on their land, which is today known as the Spade because of the motifs of their grimoires.
Consequently, the Zogratis Family became the royal family of the Spade Kingdom. However, their glory in Spade was short-lived. A hundred years after the Kingdom was born, the Zogratis family saw the birth of twins in their royal line. Upon the death of the King, a war of succession erupted and led to much tragedy, including the death of the Queen. The twins, enraged, succumbed to madness and were turned into Demons. Their power was so great that they became Demon Gods. Demon Gods are powerful humans who have succumbed to corruption, and their strength is on a whole other level. Sadly, Yuki Tabata has never shown us their design or their true power, and it's unlikely to ever happen with the ending of Black Clover.
How The Zogratis Demon Gods Were Defeated In Spade Kingdom
The rise of the two Demon Gods of the Zogratis Family 400 years before the current timeline in the Spade Kingdom led to a ton of destruction. The Demon Gods waged war, and someone had to stop them. This is where the reconquest of the Spade Kingdom began, as the Grinberryall Family, the same family Yuno hails from, took action. The Grinberryall were indigenous to the land and came back to reclaim their birthright and bring back peace to the Kingdom. It was revealed through the Perfect Grimoire that the two mysterious individuals from the family came in to challenge the Demon Gods. These two were a married Grinberryall pair, one with Sun Magic and one with Moon Magic. Needless to say, it was not an easy battle, but in the end, they emerged victorious, placing the Grinberryall family on the throne and banishing the Zogratis for what they had done to the land a hundred years prior.
Unfortunately, we never get to see the full battle, and that's definitely a letdown, as it would have made for major exposition to the Spade Kingdom and, in turn, Yuno. It would have been interesting to learn more about the pair of Moon and Sun Magic users, as Yuno's own parents possessed the same capabilities. The Grinberryall family definitely deserved more development, and the lore of their Sun, Moon, and Star Magic should certainly have been explored more. The story of the Zogratis Demon Gods in the manga would have added tension to the Spade Kingdom Raid, where the Zogratis conquered the land once more 400 years after the fall of their Demon God progenitors.
Why The Zogratis Were Black Clover’s Best Antagonists
The Zogratis are undoubtedly terrifying antagonists from the Black Clover series. The Demon Gods that almost destroyed the Spade Kingdom 400 years ago were just a small addition to their catalog of powerful villains. The Demon Gods explain the Zogratis lore and tie them back to Spade, but even in the main story of Black Clover, there are quite a few interesting Zogratis around. Some of the main Zogratis antagonists we got to meet are the trio that made up the Dark Triad, which conquered Spade and became the primary reason why Yuno ended up as an orphan in the Clover Kingdom. These three were Dante Zogratis, Vanica Zogratis, and Zenon Zogratis.
At base, they're already powerful foes, but through Devil Contracts, they reached new heights. Dante, originally born with Body Magic, was able to acquire Gravity Magic with his contract with Lucifero. Vanica made a Contract with Megicula and obtained Curse Warding Magic on top of her Blood Magic. Zenon, the youngest, made a deal with Beelzebub and acquired Spatial Magic to top off his already powerful Bones Magic. These three, however, were defeated during the Spade Kingdom Raid.
Later down the line, their bodies were simply used to fuel the oldest and strongest of the Zogratis, Lucius. Lucius shares the same body as Julius, and together they acted as the 28th Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom. Lucius was also the final antagonist of this series, possessing Soul Magic, Time Magic, and the Magic of his siblings. With this power, he became an immortal villain powerful enough to bring whole Kingdoms to their knees single-handedly. Luckily, through Asta's powers, who was born through a godly miracle, and Yuno, a descendant of the Grinberryall, who previously defeated the Zogratis Demon Gods 400 years ago, this foe was defeated and his threat eliminated.
