Downloadable content (DLC) can be a hit or miss as sometimes it does not add much to the player experience. Some of the best DLC, however, is rooted in some pretty creepy themes. This is not only about DLCs strictly based on the holiday of Halloween, but those which follow in the scary seasonal themes that Halloween sets forward.
These DLCs provide some of the scariest Halloween themes in gaming. The DLCs came from games in the horror genre, and those that weren't meant to be horrific but, through their respective DLCs, were given a terrifying twist.
10 Bump In the Night - WWE 2K20
The WWE 2K20 Bump In The Night DLC came for those who had pre-ordered the game. The entire DLC was horror-themed and included new characters, costumes, and an entirely new arena for players.
The arena is in a swamp in the middle of the night, where audience members look like mannequin zombies. There is also a light fog and the sound of nighttime creatures surrounding the ring's atmosphere. The overall themes that it presented were well done, though they could have tweaked the sound design to make it sound a little more cohesive.
9 The Curse Of The Pharaoh - Assassin’s Creed Origins
Beautiful things happen when video games can take myths and wrap a game with captivating combat around them. The Curse of the Pharaoh DLC succeeds in that by making players fight ancient spirits in the Assassin's Creed Origins setting.
The ghastly themes add to the perfect Halloween adventure with their addition of spirits, jackel-headed enemies, and a historically relevant mummy boss fight. The amount of content this DLC offer encourages players to return to the game, as it can take 10 to 12 hours to complete.
8 Dead Money - Fallout New Vegas
Sometimes people are not ready for what a DLC has to offer, and Fallout New Vegas' DLC Dead Money makes this very clear. The game takes the players from their action-adventure RPG and places them into a survival horror atmosphere. This was not well received by many at the time.
Now that time has passed, the DLC remains one of the creepiest with its ghost-like enemies. It also remains one of the best, as the DLC took the risk of being different yet did an excellent job. So, it was a nice and must-play addition to the Halloween catalog.
7 The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned - Borderlands
Borderlands' The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned feels like someone who loved Halloween was able to get complete creative freedom for the map design. Some areas in the DLC have decorations and jack o' lanterns that seem to cover almost every other corner. As the DLC expands, players also experience eerie swamps and abandoned hospitals overrun by a zombie horde.
The DLC adds a lot of different quests that players can take on for hours of fun and exploration. The Borderlands loot mechanic also adds to the time players will spend on the Island farming for the best loot they can find.
6 End Of Zoe - Resident Evil: Biohazard
The End of Zoe DLC for Resident Evil Biohazard gives players different mechanics that they need to use to take on enemies. A lot of the enemies in the DLC aren't that different from the base game, but players have to fight them with their fists instead of using guns.
The new form of combat makes for encounters that are much more terrifying than in the base game, as it's closer and more personal.
5 The Haunting - Call Of Duty: Warzone
The Haunting in Call of Duty: Warzone was an event in 2021 that acted as a DLC as it added a new game mode. The game mode was similar to the Halloween event in 2020, where the players turned into zombies when they died. It was somewhat similar in the 2021 event, but this time, players turned into ghosts with different abilities.
This was coupled on top of the Ghost Face skin, which was a great touch to the Call of Duty: Warzone franchise.
4 Festival of Blood - Infamous 2
Festival of Blood takes an RPG about superpowers and turns it into a race with time against becoming a vampire. Infamous 2 presents a Pyre night setting, which flips the atmosphere players are used to by decorating it in celebration of a festival meant to keep vampires away. It feels a lot like a vampire-centric Halloween celebration.
The added vampiric abilities compel the players to feel like blood-sucking villains of the night on a journey for salvation.
3 Undead Nightmare - Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will excite any Halloween fan, as it deals with one of the most worn costumes in Halloween: Zombies. This DLC adds an entirely different spin on the game because instead of dealing with villains, the players must now deal mainly with an undead threat.
The DLC also adds new horse types, representing the apocalypse's four horsemen. It feels massive in scale, making it worthwhile for the players to get through.
2 Halloween Escalation - Hitman 2
The Hitman 2 Halloween Escalation DLC feels like a dream, but instead of the player getting chased by some sort of spectral being, they take on that role. The player will wake up in a bed as a headless horseman type of character and have three different playable on the map.
The setting is one of the best parts, as the player walks around tall grass in an area that looks like a cemetery with a modern-day mansion. It is built up in the center of the map, while Halloween-themed decor is spread along the few dying trees.
1 The HALLOWEEN Chapter - Dead By Daylight
The HALLOWEEN Chapter in Dead By Daylight adds Michael Myers to the game, a new survivor, as well as the map of Haddonfield. This map's theme is based on the popular Halloween movie series. On top of all of this, the DLC was released on Halloween to build on the already Halloween-heavy content.
The Haddonfield map looks like an abandoned Halloween town, and overall, this is one of the DLCs that truly goes into the Halloween theme due to the nature of the movie it's based on.
