There is a seemingly-countless amount of gear that you can find in Baldur's Gate 3, and while most of them will be pretty clear about what their effects are, some of them will be a little bit more vague. In some cases, they may not be clear at all, leaving players to figure it out on their own through trial and error.

The Devilfoil Mask is an item that you will come across in the game's second act, with four of them to be found. Picking one up will not give you any indication on what kind of effects they will give you. But don't be worried: these masks do have a very tangible effect on you and your party, and it can be something very useful for specific kinds of character builds.

Where To Find Devilfoil Masks

Here, you will be able to find each of the masks in the four following locations

  • On the altar next to the Legionnaire
  • On the ground next to the Legionnaire
  • On the table found in the main hall of the area

Devilfoil Masks Effects

BG3 - Party of Characters

So with the masks in your inventory, it's time to figure out what exactly it is that they do. When you put one of them on, you won't see an immediate change or effect come into play, so you will naturally be confused about what to do with it.

The purpose of the Devilfoil Mask to wear it as one group, as when wearing one of the masks, the effects will not activate until you have come close to another character wearing another one. When you come within 20 meters of another character who is wearing a mask, you will increase your Strength by 1 and decrease your Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma by one point.

Further, these effects stack on each other when there are more characters nearby that are wearing them. When you have all four masks being worn by characters in a 20-meter radius, you will get a Strength bonus of 3, with the rest of the stats getting a decrease of 3.

Which begs the question of when should you use a Devilfoil Mask? The honest answer is that the mask is going to be a burden for more players than it is going to be a benefit. If your character is focused solely on Strength, then the masks would be a big help in getting that bump, but you would then be limiting the Strength of the other characters in your party. So unless you have a full, four-person party of characters who are all focused on Strength builds, then leave the masks off.

If you're not going to use it and don't care about keeping it in your inventory, then you can sell the masks for 240 gold each, which can be a good sum of money.
