Every Awakened Devil Fruit in One Piece, Explained

One Piece's power system revolves almost entirely around the mysterious Devil Fruits. As more characters began awakening their Devil Fruits, especially after the time-skip, the power scale in One Piece continues to shift. With Luffy awakening Gear 5, the true nature of his Human-Human Fruit: Model Nika, was finally revealed, making him even more powerful than ever before.

Awakening a Devil Fruit opens a whole new world of advanced possibilities for the user, with Trafalgar Law and Charlotte Katakuri both being prime examples of pirates who have tapped into a higher level of potential. With awakened Devil Fruits becoming even more important to Luffy's quest to become the King of the Pirates, understanding them is an absolute must for One Piece fans.

The Birdcage is Even More Dangerous With An Awakened String-String Fruit

Donquixote Doflamingo has had the String-String fruit for most of his life, so he likely awakened it before the anime began. With it, he can control strings to an extreme degree. Doflamingo is also capable of using these strings to puppet people and make clones of himself. Plus, the strings are plenty strong on their own.

Doflamingo's most devastating technique is his Birdcage. With this skill, he produces enough strings to cage an island and then proceeds to drag them towards the center of the island, destroying everything in their path. While not inherently an awakened skill, being able to turn the surroundings into string can only make this power easier. Generally, the abilities that Doflamingo uses awakened techniques to perform require quite a bit of string to create thick constructs.

The Mochi-Mochi Fruit Is a Special Paramecia

Though the Mochi-Mochi fruit is a Paramecia, it functions like a Logia; this gives it the rare distinction of being a special Paramecia. Between being able to totally manipulate his body and predict attacks with his observation haki, Charlotte Katakuri is a difficult man to land a hit on. Most of Katakuri's regular techniques focus on him manipulating his own body and setting it on fire or using armament Haki to attack. He can also create objects with his mochi.

Katakuri is able to control his surroundings when he turns them into mochi with his awakened powers. Between making the ground unstable or making it attack his opponent, he can make an attack happen anywhere. He can still use armament Haki on this mochi, too.

The Magnet-Magnet Fruit Is Exceedingly Simple

Eustass Kid rarely uses overly complicated techniques with his Devil Fruit. Mostly, he uses it to create machines out of the metal parts that he controls. His prosthetic arc is presumably one of the things he regularly remakes with his Devil Fruit. When not just pushing or pulling metal around him, Kid's creations have a distinct mecha flair to them.

With the awakening of his fruit, Kid can assign a pole to any person or object around him. By assigning two different poles to different people or objects, they are attracted like magnets would be. The opposite happens with the same poles. The assigned target functions like a normal magnet in that they attract metal as well. While the awakened skills of this fruit are far simpler than the regular ones, the control over one's opponent and sheer power are greater.

The Op-Op Fruit Offers Plenty of Variety

The Op-Op fruit provides an incredible number of powers even without being awakened. Since the core premise of this fruit is that it creates an operating room that the user has complete control of, the user has access to both medical based powers and area control ones. Law is able to cut the limbs off people while leaving them alive. At the same time, he's able to teleport anything in his room, among other abilities.

When awakened, the Op-Op Fruit's user can transfer rooms to objects and other people without being in them. Law uses this to get past Big Mom's defenses and manipulate the state of his sword. He also comes up with a technique that copies one of the abilities of the Calm-Calm fruit used by his mentor, Donquixote Rosinate. The thing the Op-Op fruit is most desired for is the immortality surgery, which may or may not require it to be awakened first.

Impel Down's Minotaurs Are Failed Zoan Awakenings

It's possible that all Devil Fruits have a mind of their own, but Zoans definitely do. Even basic Zoans that simply allow the user to turn into an animal have personalities. These personalities just aren't seen much. This is a trait that becomes even more prevalent when it comes to Mythical Zoans, as seen by how the Human-Human fruit, Model: Nika escaping marine custody for years.

Because Zoans have personalities, awakening them is a risky choice. It's possible that they can completely overwhelm the user and make them a mindless beast, stuck in a partial Zoan transformation. This is seen in the Mintaurus and other similar Impel Down guards. As they aren't considered to have a complete awakening, they don't have the floating shawl that indicates a Zoan awakening.

The Gum-Gum Fruits Is Actually the Mythical Human Human Fruit, Model: Nika

The Gum-Gum fruit was very close to acting like a Special Paramecia instead of just a regular one. It turned Luffy's body into rubber and let him do some very strange techniques. However, it was without the total control of the body that the Mochi-Mochi fruit and Logias have, leaving it as a Paramecia. Luffy created his gears and combined them with haki to make himself stronger in battle, but Gear 5 came out on its own when he needed the recovery abilities most.

In Gear 5, Luffy's hair and clothes are bleached white. He is also constantly happy and laughing, plus his heartbeat (the Drums of Liberation) is a core part of this transformation. Not only does he have an even greater ability to manipulate his body, now functioning like a rubber hose character, but he can also apply cartoon logic to other people and his surroundings as well. There's virtually no limit on what this Awakened Devil Fruit

The Cat Cat Fruit, Model Leopard is Faster Than Ever

Rob Lucci's Devil Fruit doesn't actually have the most impressive changes after awakening. The Cat-Cat fruit, Model: Leopard is a very straightforward Zoan. It allows the user to have three different forms that make them stronger and give them different skills. Like most Zoan users, Rob Lucci favors the hybrid form most in battle, but will transform when the other forms are needed.

After awakening the Cat-Cat Fruit, Model: Leopard, Rob Lucci's transformations are stronger, faster, and regenerate quicker than ever. Lucci shows no signs of struggle when it comes to keeping his mind, but his personality seems to suit the fruit, anyway. With his awakening, Lucci is able to hold off Gear 5 for a very short period of time, but he does fare a bit better against Roronoa Zoro. However, it doesn't actually give him new techniques.

The Ox-Ox Fruit, Model: Giraffe Has a Strange Neck

Kaku has only used his Awakened Devil Fruit once in battle. The first time he fought Roronoa Zoro, Kaku was still getting used to the fruit and struggling with it. However, he did manage to use the transformations to enhance his other techniques. He needed time to gain a real understanding of what the fruit could provide him.

Kaku has clearly put the time into mastering his fruit to awaken it. He has much freer control over his body with the awakening, and his neck is ridiculously flexible and strong. He still doesn't win his rematch against Zoro, but he's definitely stronger than before. Kaku doesn't seem to use the variety of different forms that he once did, now that his fruit is awakened. His ability to master the awakened fruit just goes to show Kaku's dedication despite wishing for a different life.

The Dragon-Dragon Fruit, Model: Kirin Relies on Mythical Abilities

The only reason fans know that St. Killingham's Devil Fruit has awakened is because it comes with the floating shawl that has become prototypical of Awakened Devil Fruits. So far, Saint Rimoshifu Killingham has only been shown in his partial Zoan transformation, and even when eating, he maintains this form. Obviously, he doesn't struggle with the personality alteration that an awakened zoan comes with. Instead, he liberally uses the abilities of the fruit to ensure his duties as a God's Knight.

St. Killingham's Devil Fruit allows the user to put other people to sleep and make their dreams a reality. It works for both nightmares and more innocuous things, and the dreams don't go away after the originator wakes. This fruit also seems to have the ability to induce sleep paralysis in others, too. While the things this devil fruit manifests don't seem especially durable, the manga has yet to fully put these powers to the test.
