Beloved Harry Potter Star Joins Johnny Depp in New Look at Reimagined Holiday Tale

Johnny Depp will be back on the big screen with this year's release of Ebenezer, a new take on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. A new look has been revealed for the film, highlighting some of Depp's co-stars.

Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer transforms Depp into Ebenezer Scrooge, the iconic character previously played by the likes of Alastair Sim, George C. Scott, and Patrick Stewart. In the new take on A Christmas Carol, Harry Potter legend Rupert Grint also stars as Bob Cratchit. A look at Depp's Scrooge and Grint's Bob was shown in a new sneak peek photo. Other images also showcase Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Scrooge's deceased business partner, as well as Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present.

Johnny Depp Leads the Cast of Ebenezer

“[Bob Cratchit's] a core emotion in the movie, for sure,” West told Entertainment Weekly about Grint's role. “I think he brings a certain sympathy that you have for him that maybe you don’t have in some of the other versions, because I think you do get a sense of what it’s like to have this job where he’s kind of the whipping boy of the job for a long time.”

On McKellen's role, he added, “Marley is really kind of a son of a bitch in the movie, and he plays that in a somewhat likable way that you shouldn’t [like him], but it’s really great. You do get a sense of that character’s pain in the movie when he comes to visit Scrooge.”

"[Tillman's Ghost of Christmas Present] has a little bit of a sense of, ‘In my brief time that I’m here to do this with you, I want to get the show on the road, and I also want to enjoy what I can because my time here is limited,’” West continued. “So they have a very different dynamic than everybody else in the film. We really tried to give each of the ghosts a specific personality, and he has that.”

A Christmas Carol Gets Reimagined by Ti West

Based on the original tale by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer follows the Christmas-despising Ebenezer Scrooge as he faces visions of the past, present, and future on his journey to redemption. Along with the aforementioned cast members, Ebenezer also features Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie), Daisy Ridley (Star Wars), Sam Claflin (Peaky Blinders), and Ellie Bamber (Willow). Nathaniel Halpern wrote the script.

Depp looks almost unrecognizable in the role, but that's not unusual for the actor. He is known for playing highly transformative roles in a variety of his past feature films. West has teased that he brings something completely new to the character of Scrooge in Ebenezer that is unlike any of Depp's previous performances.

"I don’t think a lot of those other iconic performances really relate to this — in the same way that they don’t relate to one another,” he said.

“The idea of him doing his thing, in a way, is still prevalent. But it’s not Captain Jack. It’s certainly not Wonka. It’s not Edward Scissorhands. It doesn’t feel like any of those. But you do feel like the mercurial guy that created those things is doing his take on Ebenezer Scrooge.”

Ebenezer will be released in movie theaters on Nov. 13, 2026.
