Many consider The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to be one of the best action role-playing video games ever created. CD Projekt's The Witcher games are based on a series of Polish fantasy novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. As expected from the fantasy genre, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (Witcher 3) has a large catalog of monsters for players to face.
The Witcher 3 bestiary includes dozens of monsters across several categories. The franchise features many incredible and unique monsters and offers interesting twists on common monster tropes like vampires and werewolves. Narrowing down the coolest monsters from this remarkable game isn't an easy feat, but Witcher 3 offers some truly amazing creatures.
This article was updated on February 12, 2025: The Witcher series of books has spawned a Netflix show and a series of popular games. The monsters of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt make the game challenging, immersive, and fun to play. 15 Giant Centipedes Are the Bane of Many Witcher 3 Players
Geralt Will Face Several Armored and Equally Fierce Centipedes

In the Blood and Wine expansion of The Witcher 3, players encounter what is one of the most hated monsters in the entire bestiary. And what is cooler than a monster that players fiercely despise? Players can find The Witcher 3's Giant Centipedes in the Duchy of Toussaint, although, it's more accurate to say the centipedes will find Geralt first. Lurking underground, Centipedes can arise at a moment's notice and tunnel back into the earth just as quickly, making them the ideal start to this list in the 15th spot.
They have chitinous armor and a bunch of hooked legs that can deliver a vicious blow. But that isn't the worst part. They have powerful mandibles that serve as their primary form of attack, and they can spit acid at an opponent. Even worse, they often travel in pairs. Their difficulty leads some players to replay the game. Players are advised to use a Yrden sign trap by placing it over a spot where the beast rises out of the ground. This will trap them and prevent them from tunneling.
14 Cyclopses Give The Witcher 3 a Touch of Greek Mythology
The Cyclopses Are Rare and Impressive Monsters In The Witcher 3
When players find a Cyclops, the best advice they can implement is to stay out of the way. Cyclopes are rare monsters in The Witcher 3, which makes an encounter with one very memorable. These one-eyed monsters are perhaps the most primitive of the bestiary and this may be why they are so dangerous. They do not rely on poison or nifty range attacks, but rather on a combination of brute force and wild unpredictability.
The Cyclops swings its arms to pound, smack, or otherwise crush the opponent, and these monsters can also jump high and create a devastating blow when they land. Cyclopses can also do a wild rush, which is a kind of frenzied attack that can be alarmingly fast considering their size. When doing a wild rush, they can also change direction quickly to intercept players' attempts to get out of the way. The best thing to do is stay out of their way and attack from the side or behind.
13 Higher Vampires Are Extremely Dangerous
The Witcher 3's Higher Vampires Can Disguise Themselves as Normal People
Of the many dangerous monsters in The Witcher 3, Higher Vampires are among the most fearsome. A Higher Vampire has unique powers, making one unpredictable in the fight. Another measure of their unpredictability is the fact that Higher Vampires are usually highly emotional and don't need blood to survive, so drinking it is like getting intoxicated.
The bottom line for higher vampires is that witchers can't kill them. The best players can hope to do is cause enough damage that another Higher Vampire will come in and finish it off. It's touches like this that make The Witcher 3 a benchmark for video game storytelling. Things that can aid against a Higher Vampire include Black Blood and Igni. Geralt can also gain a defensive advantage by protecting himself with Quen.
12 Dettlaff Van Der Eretein Is a Vicious Higher Vampire
Dettlaff Is the Toughest Boss In The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine DLC
Dettlaff Van Der Eretein is one of the toughest Vampires in the Blood and Wine DLC for The Witcher 3. Geralt fights him twice in the course of the game. While the first fight is difficult, the second fight is even more taxing. He is a vicious fighter in vampire form and can attack swiftly, surprising players. As a grotesque, bat-like creature with long and very sharp claws, he has several attacks that can devastate Geralt.
Dettlaff can summon a hoard of bats to swarm the Witcher. He can also transform himself into a rain of blood that pools on the ground and grows into a pillar, transforming back into Dettlaff, who then launches himself skyward. From there, the vampire can attack from the sky and also trap Geralt inside himself where the Witcher must attack his three hearts.
11 The Toad Prince Haunts the Sewers of Oxenfurt
Players Encounter the Toad In The Witcher 3's Hearts of Stone DLC
The Toad Prince was once one Prince Sirvat. The heir to the throne of Ofiri was offered the hand of a woman named Iris when he visited Oxenfurt. However, Olgierd von Everec had his eye on the woman and cursed Sirvat to become a toad. Upon seeing his transformation, Prince Sirvat fled to the sewers. If this story sounds familiar, The Witcher 3 draws a parallel to the folk tale of the girl who kisses a frog and witnesses the frog's transformation into a prince.
No such romance is involved here, as the Toad Prince is one of the coolest and most difficult monsters to beat in the game. The Toad Prince can breathe a poisonous gas that is deadly and also has a ranged attack ability in the form of its tongue. The toad can also jump and kick viciously. For Geralt to clean up Oxenfurt's water supply, he has to avoid these attacks, use a combination of potions to protect himself from the gas, and oil his sword to inflict more damage on this monster.
10 Plague Maidens Give Infectious Disease a Humanoid Form
Reading "Of Sweat and Blood" In-Game Adds This Monster to Geralt's Bestiary
Although The Witcher 3 isn't a horror game, it contains plenty of dark fantasy elements that make some encounters downright horrifying. The Plague Maidens are some of the most unsettling and disgusting monsters in the game. Plague Maidens are, as the name implies, embodiments of pestilence. Specifically, they are spirits that personify disease, making them the ideal monster for the 10th spot on the list.
These wraiths can be difficult to fight because they can switch between material and immaterial forms. When Plague Maidens aren't attacking, hitting them is cumbersome because they will evade attacks by using their immaterial form. Plague Maidens can also summon swarms of disease-carrying insects and unleash them upon their victims. Fighting them is tricky because getting close to one means exposing oneself to the plague of insects.
9 Fiends Can Hypnotize Foes With Their Third Eye
Fiends Usually Live In Woods or Swampy Areas
Fiends are large, deer-like relict creatures that possess a third eye. With their third eye, they can hypnotize their enemies, but they're known for easily dispatching humans they cross paths with. Most Fiends live in woods or swampy areas, and they tend to avoid humanity. If they can't, they'll usually kill humans on the spot.
Thanks to their size, Fiends have little trouble defeating most enemies. The Witcher 3's bestiary entry describes them as "walking mountains of muscle capped with horned, tooth-filled heads." It's said that Fiends are so large and strong that one smack is enough to kill a knight wearing head-to-toe armor. Read "Beasts of the Tukaj Foothills" in-game to add this monster to the bestiary.
8 Hym Slowly Drive Their Victims Insane
They Are The Witcher 3's Most Dangerous Type of Demon
The Hym is a special type of specter because they don't attack their opponents or victims in a literal way. Instead, these demons feed on a person's guilt. The longer a victim is exposed to a Hym's influence, the more likely they are to lose their minds. Often, Hym attacks drive a person to suicide to make the torment stop.
This particular monster is a nasty one to deal with because it can't be exorcised like most demons. Hym occupy multiple "spheres" at once, meaning they exist on different planes simultaneously, like the real world and Gaunter's world. The Hym takes on the form of shadows lurking in the dark, giving new meaning to the phrase "afraid of your own shadow." Hym are terrifying creatures, but they do typically prey on the guilty.
7 Bruxa Are Bat-Like Vampires Who Do Not Fear the Sun
The Witcher's Bruxa Can Take the Form of Beautiful, Dark-Haired Humans
Bruxa are vampires that take on the form of beautiful, dark-haired humans. Bruxa are almost always female and, unlike many other vampire variants in The Witcher, they are unaffected by the sun. Although Bruxa spend most of their time in a human body and often have human lovers, Bruxa are giant, bat-like creatures with the ability to fly. Earn the bestiary entry by completing the "The Beast of Toussaint" quest.
Bruxa are deadly in close combat thanks to their razor-sharp teeth (they are vampires, after all) and claws. This particular type of vampire doesn't need to get close to its opponent to cause damage, though. Bruxa possess a banshee-like scream that releases powerful energy from their mouth, capable of sending men flying from a distance. The Bruxa has appeared in every Witcher game. The Bruxa was also the main focus of Netflix's The Witcher, Season Two, Episode One - "A Grain of Truth."
6 Royal Wyverns Are Fearless Flying Beasts
They Are Larger and More Dangerous Than The Witcher Universe's Normal Wyverns
Royal Wyverns are larger and more powerful than normal Wyverns. They are known for being fearless and aggressive, and most humans have no hope of scaring a Royal Wyvern away. This species doesn't cower in the face of human weaponry. They are often fueled by their hunger and will stop at nothing to get a good meal, and Royal Wyverns also have venom on their side.
In The Witcher 3, the "Phantom of the Trading Route" contract sends Geralt after an abnormally large Royal Wyvern that has been stalking a nearby trading route. This dragon-like creature is as impressive as it is imposing. The Witcher 3's bestiary entry compares the Royal Wyvern to a talented hunter who knows all the best tricks to come home with its prey between its teeth.
