    22 June 1961. Singer-songwriter James (“Jimmy”) Somerville was born in Greenock, Scotland. He was the lead singer of the 1980s pop groups Bronski Beat and The Communards before pursuing a solo career. He’s known for his powerful and soulful singing voice.

    22 June 2013. Danish racing driver Allan Simonsen (aged 34) died after a crash during the third lap of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Car Race in France. His death was the first during Le Mans since Jo Gartner had died in a 1986 crash. There has been just one fatality since then.

    22 June 1987. Hollywood dancing legend Fred Astaire died (aged 88). He starred in 31 musical films. As a dancer, his most outstanding trait was his uncanny sense of rhythm. His most memorable dancing partnership was with Ginger Rogers. They made 10 films together.

    22 June 1986. Diego Maradona scored one of the greatest World Cup goals during a 2-1 victory by Argentina over England in the Quarter Final. This goal came after his infamous “Hand of God” goal in the same game.

    22 June 1986. England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the Quarter Final of the Mexico World Cup. Photographs made clear that Diego Maradona had used his hand to score the first goal. He called it “The Hand of God.” The second Maradona goal was one of the greatest World Cup goals ever.

    22 June 1981. Mark David Chapman decided to plead guilty to the murder of John Lennon on 8 December 1980. It came as a surprise, as in the months following Lennon’s murder, Chapman’s lawyers had put forward a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

    22 June 1979. Former Liberal Party leader Jeremy Thorpe was surprisingly found not guilty of being part of a conspiracy to murder his former lover Norman Scott. Despite his acquittal, his political career was ruined and he was never rehabilitated.

    22 June 1974. Helen Joanne [”Jo”] Cox was born in Batley. She served as the Member of Parliament for Batley and Spen from her election in May 2015 until she was killed on 16 June 2016 by a far-right extremist. The Jo Cox Foundation was subsequently formed to preserve her legacy.

    22 April 1969. Briton Robin Knox-Johnston completed the first non-stop solo voyage around the world in The Times Golden Globe Race. He set off from Falmouth on 14 June 1968 aboard his yacht Suhaili and arrived back in Falmouth after 312 days at sea.

    22 June 1967. The drug possession trial of Rolling Stone members Mick Jagger and Keith Richards began in London. Seven days later. the judge sentenced Jagger to 3 months and Richards to one year in jail. In August 1967, these sentences were quashed by the court of appeal.

    22 June 1948. 1,027 Passengers disembarked from HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Dock, London, after a voyage from Jamaica. Of these, 802 came from the Caribbean. The majority were West Indian immigrants seeking a new life in Britain. They became known as the “Windrush Generation”.
