
MOU Signing ceremony With Federal and Regional Supreme Courts of Ethiopia to Facilitate Support for Clearance of Backlog Files
JFA-PFE in in collaboration with The Royal Embassy of The Netherlands and The Royal Embassy of Norway has facilitated financial support for clearance of backlog files during the Ethiopian summer (August and September). On August 14, 2015, memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed between Justice For All-PFE and five supreme courts at Federal Supreme Court. The participating courts were, Federal Supreme Court, Oromia Supreme Court, Amhara Supreme Court, Tigray Supreme Court, and SNNP Supreme Court.
The event was graced by the presence of Norwegian and Netherlands Ambassadors to Ethiopia H.E. Ambassador Andreas Gaarder and H.E. Ambassador Lidi Remmelzwaal respectively. In his keynote address Ambassador Garrder affirmed that “Norway and Ethiopia has a long standing and close relationship. The support to the Ethiopian justice sector is a corner stone in our broader field of cooperation and engagement with in governance and human rights…. It is therefore a pleasure to be here today to mark the successful clearance of large number of case backlog within federal and regional courts’’.
Ambassador Rimmelzwaal has also reiterated in her keynote address that ‘‘the Netherlands is proud to be a long-standing partner of the Ethiopian government, not only through strong economic and trade relations, especially in the agribusiness sector, but also through our development programs, of which the strengthening of Rule of Law is a vital part. The Human Rights Protection and Justice Service Delivery Project of Justice for All is an important element of our support to improving the Rule of Law in Ethiopia. Today we are here for the component of this program that aims to improve the case-clearance rate of the Federal Court and the Regional Courts. I am pleased that we are able to contribute to help solve this challenging problem in the court system that is affecting the suspects; rights by creating lengthy trial delays.’’
