Opportunities for all students.

Overview

We provide exceptional internships for undergraduate and graduate students of all majors and disciplines. The Hinckley Institute of Politics places more than 350 students every year in local, state, national, and global internships. Not a political science major?  Not a problem. Eligibility

In order to complete a Hinckley internship, you must be a registered student at the University of Utah. In order to receive an internship scholarship, you must a matriculated, degree-seeking student. While students who graduate from the University of Utah are also eligible to complete a Hinckley internship during the semester following graduation (or in the fall if they graduated in the spring), they are still required to register for academic credit and are not eligible for scholarship funding. We accordingly recommend students interested in interning their senior year, defer graduation so that they can qualify for scholarship funding.

In order to increase your competitiveness as an applicant, we strongly recommend that you take our Forum Series Course (HNKLY 3910) in order to hone your writing and public speaking—two skills critical to host offices.

GLOBAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Hinckley Global Internship program has secured respected positions in more than 50 nations and counting. Ten of the internships are with parliaments.

NATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Hinckley Institute boasts one of the longest-standing DC internship programs in the nation. It provides more than 100 students annually with full-time, paid, and housed internships.

LOCAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Hinckley Institute of Politics sends approximately 130 students each year to a wide variety of campaign, government, and non-profit organizations in the Salt Lake City area.

STATE LEGISLATURE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Hinckley Interns function as support staff to legislators during the Spring Semester of each year. Interns track legislation, write speeches, attend committee meetings, research issues, and analyze bills.

SET UP YOUR OWN INTERNSHIP

The Hinckley Institute is committed to providing students unrivaled internship experiences. Accordingly, if a student secures a placement with an eligible office on their own, we can still offer credit and even funding opportunities.

CAPITAL ENCOUNTER

Are you unable to serve a full-semester internship in DC? The Hinckley Institute provides a one-week intensive program. Hinckley Academic Outreach Coordinator and Political Science Associate Professor Lecturer Dr. Tim Chambless travels with students to the nation's capital at the culmination of a preparatory spring semester preparation.
