WELCOME
“I am going to write something strange,” Chekhov wrote when he was only planning to write a play. This prediction, it must be said, came true in full measure: no other play has had such an unusual fate as “The Seagull.” At Chekhov Theatre School in Melikhovo, we will mark the 120th anniversary of this extraordinary masterpiece during the 2015 season with the most innovative masters within the Art of Acting to share their skills and inspiration in our leading Master Courses, which take place in the most remarkable pearl of Russian theatre history — in Anton Chekhov’s village of Melikhovo.
Anton Chekhov is one of the most profoundly subversive writers and was that rare writer who made an equally brilliant contribution to the theatre. The valuation of Chekhov the playwright is that he creates the atmosphere that reflects the needs of his time, moves away from the principles of classical drama, and reveals the psychological experiences of the characters on stage.
Chekhov’s most outstanding wisdom lay in his humility, tolerance, and compassion: absolute condemnation of no one, forgiveness for all, and compassion to all. The effect of Chekhov’s plays, on the actor or the audience member, is to teach us more about life and ourselves. A spoken word, a pause, distant music, the flapping of wings, a meeting, and a farewell — step by step these elements create, through Chekhov’s language illusion, an image of a comprehensive piece of life.

Our staff invites you to join us to celebrate a unique, artistic work experience. As an artist, you will touch upon and gain new discoveries and skills into the mysteries of Chekhov’s “The Seagull.” During 2015, the Chekhov Theatre School invites the most innovative masters within the Art of Acting to share their skills and inspiration in our leading Master Courses, which take place in the most remarkable pearl of Russian theatre history — in Anton Chekhov’s village of Melikhovo.
In keeping with Chekhov’s words, we would like to welcome you to join us on this artistic path, and to come together to fulfill the intention of the living theatre: “In the search for truth, men make two steps forward and one step back. Suffering, mistakes, and weariness of life thrust them back, but the thirst for truth and stubbornness will drive them on and on. And who knows? Perhaps they will reach the real truth at last.”
Now it is time — to work, to share and to inspire! Let us gather together to celebrate, learn, develop, uncover, nurture and create!
