Same thought as 2 posts below: TOO RESTRICTED TO EVALUATE. AND IT'S NOT LIKE IT COSTS 10 BUCKS SO I WANNA KNOW WHAT I'M DEALING WITH. Plus no update for a long time.... Meanwhile "SWf 2 flash converter version .azillion" works more or less well, depending on files, I guess any decompiler/can openers will fault at some level but they can be helpful without opening every can.

Gordon is an interesting app, but still isn't able to save back modified ActionScript (some times, you would simply substitute on-the-fly a play() with a stop(), instead of the long process of blah, blah, blah).

Converts to .fla, true, but some times in un-usable format. At least with some test files (a bit complex movies; otherwise, they wouldn't require conversion), it doesn't create interpolations, problems with groups, random shapes, masks, positions of items... (2/21/2006, Version: 1.6.3)

I have been evaluating this software for some time now and so far the Interface still needs some work,

(understanding that a developer needs to retain some control over a demo app, the limitations in the demo version seem to be so invasive that an effective evaluation is impossible)

a few points to the developer as he did offer to decompile and then return the fla file for review however this does not offer an evaluation of the actual software itself.

laying aside the controversial nature of some of the flames here, (and elsewhere)

finding a tool that will decompile a SWF and reassemble into a functioning FLA does can have some positive results in learning how FLASH files work for learning and for recovering from a loss of data, (taking content and decompiling for use is just not right, however FLASH by its very nature is open)

so if you have a problem with decompiling (as seen here in some comments)

I would suggest you take it up with Macromedia, (opps) thats ADOBE, now,

(what a joke)

Anyhowz

I find this software still in need of some improvements perhaps if the software evaluation were more "open" save command in demo, ect,

I would be more interested in investing in a license, however currently the software seems to be less rather than more.

I personally would pay $200.00 or more for software that would work,

sadly, I have a closet full of such software,
( very expensive way to try it out )

and many here do as well, these days I have to see it work,

disabling the save function, (while I understand it)

still does not help sell the software, If I could actually "TRY OUT" the very function that is most interesting to me, I would be more interested in making a purchase,

however at this time I cannot recommend it.

This guy's a rip off artist, whatever you do, don't give this guy money... the software doesn't work! (just try to change a link in the Actions... you can't save it!)

He knows this, too, and will NEVER return your emails.

Even worse, HE'S the one who fakes the glowing reviews in VersionTracker... what a lying bugger.

Here's his information, feel free to harass him to get your money back, but good luck, apparently there's no laws against this in Germany:

It's unfortunate that we Mac people have to rely on such crappy software for these sort of tasks. There's just so much more out there on the Windows side. I bought this software over a year ago for my Mac - haven't found a SWF yet that it could do anything with.

These guys should be shut down. There software does nothing but take money from you. (10/20/2005, Version: 1.6)

I wanted to like this. I was even willing to pay for something that would do this. I failed
Let me put this into perspective. I am a new Flash user, wanting to prepare materials for my own use in school. Yes, there are commercial products out there but they never quite meet the needs of my students - or me. So, having read an article in a professional journal I decided Flash was for me, and disassembling code would help me learn - not a rip-off!
I had problems from the start with things appearing as icons at the side but nothing on the stage. I contacted the developer ... and waited... and waited ... and waited. Finally a web search brought up SWF to FLA converter
They now have my money (10/8/2005, Version: 1.6)

Save-as-fla doesn't work:

"This document contains embedded objects that were created with the Microsoft Windows version of Flash. These embedded objects must be deleted before opening on the Macintosh."

Followed by:

"Failed to open document ... blah".

I tried also with a very simple document (a movie clip and a simple "play()"), and it crashed Flash MX 2004. (9/27/2005, Version: 1.6)

One of the listed new features is not working on my end. I took SWF files created from Flash MX, Flash MX 2004 and Flash 8, and tried converting them to FLA files, and none of the files converted would open. In some instances the application (Flash) would crash altogether. (9/26/2005, Version: 1.6)

I would really like to see what this program is capable of. Too bad it crashes every single time I click on a Library item. Also, I can not click on all frames, just certain ones. And last but not least it is only saving and extracting back into a swf file. Shouldn't this software make it available to save as fla file to use with flash? Can't recommend.. Gordon is a very basic & flawed piece of software.

It DOES have rudimentary support for actionscript viewing, and DOES have the ability to save out bitmaps & sounds from the library.

It does not make it easy to figure out what is going on with the actionscript, does not present the full timeline, or actionscript in all cases, does not give you the ability to figure out mc names, and does not make it easy to explore timeline items like frame names if actionscript is also in that frame.

It works well for a few things. Deprotecting movies from import, and saving out images & sounds (though you have to do this one at a time.

I bought this and I'm feel very stupid for doing so. I ended up buying another product for the PC (which I didn't want to have to use) and it works very well.

OH, and it crashed now and then when trying to acces large bitmaps in the library. (10/16/2004, Version: 1.4)

I am not a fan of stealing other people's code. It is simply wrong. People looking around to steal people's ideas and hard work, go get some skills for yourself and quit it.

However, Gordon surprisingly does have it's valid uses! I have just finished a large project in which I had a solid month's flash work backed up and had lost the entire project in a single sweep due to a syncing error in my sync package (damn you, Chronosync!).

There is nothing worse than the 'syncing' feeling of losing so much work when your deadline is only two days away. Thanks to Gordon, I managed to salvage most* of my code and artwork from a live copy of the three main .swf files and recreate the entire project in two days! In other words, Gordon saved me my job and A$7000 for the contract. As if I would have guessed that any of these stories about people losing their .fla files and decompiling the .swf to extract their code were true!

*Note: One suggestion would be the support of extracting AS2.0 classes. That is my only criticism and it did mean I had to spend a few hours recreating the classes, but apart from that Gordon is a fantastic tool and may just save your job one day :D (10/10/2004, Version: 1.4)

Also, remember that SWF is "open source". The specification is at Macromedia's web site. So, *anybody* can decompile a swf file with a bit of knowledge and time (eg, the developer of Gordon).
In fact, you don't need Gordon to decompile a swf movie, but simply the PDF available at Macromedia. (9/3/2004, Version: 1.4)

To those who are only offended by the ethics of such a tool I say: get a little bit of work done rather than wasting your time commenting! Sure there is an important ethic issue here. But this is a needed tool! I have recently destroyed by mistake my own Flash source files and I was sure happy to be able to recuperate a big part of them when I had changes to make. The alternative would have been to recreate completely all of them from scratch, including having to redo all the images in Illustrator and Photoshop. It would have taken weeks... I think this tool is a wonderful idea.

Learning by example and building on previous ideas is exactly how html and javascript went from 'here is a picture of me and my dog, with an image rollover' to enterprise information delivery solutions at such a rapid rate.

Anyone that works in the web industry today owes their livelihood to the fact that all of the first web code was open source. I learned markup and scripting from what I found others doing and I know that other people built off of the pages I'd created. The tricks I invented have become standard practice because if people liked what I'd done, they could see how I did it and expand on my techniques.

To say that code should be kept secret is to say that ignorance is bliss and re-inventing the wheel is a great thing to keep doing over and over and over and over...

It's fine to have competing techniques but let the best prevail in the public domain. Good ideas are the ones that should be spread the most, as quickly as possible. With encapsulated formats such as .swf, programs like this are the only way to allow this process to continue.

I think Utah Philips put it best with his comments to the effect of: Time is an enormous long river and I am standing in it. My elders are the tributaries. I can reach down into this river for what I need in this world. And I'll put into the river and it will flow away, to others who make it part of their lives.

This is the process by which music, language and all human invention is created. Denying this flow of knowledge could be called stupid if it wasn't so naive. (7/8/2004, Version: 1.3.3)

This decompiler seems to be a dishonest person's tool to steal ideas that they are incapable of developing themselves. Why else would anyone use it? (Fill in your own rationalization here.)

Would you buy a tool to help you steal a car? Would you buy a tool to help you steal credit card numbers? Well, if so, this code-stealing tool is probably for you (and your stolen copy of Flash.)

Is the addict or the dealer responsible? Each one points at the other and says - "I wouldn't exist if not for that fool."

WC Fields joke -
He: Madame, would you sleep with me for 3 million dollars?
She: 3 million? Okay.
He: Would you sleep with me for a dollar?
She: Hey, what kind of a girl do you think I am?
He: We've already established that. Now we're negotiating price.

Don't sell out. Avoid this tool.

I own this product and have found it to be a very good addition to my Flash authoring tool chest. Most companies would have charged for upgrades I am receiving for free. Especially since macromedia has updated their player and Flagship product. The updates alone would have been enough excuse to call it version 2 and charge for an upgrade. They have increase capabilities and enhanced the speed of this product. Bravo!! Keep up the great work. If you author Macromedia Fash on the MAC you should not be without this product. It does not yet decompile the new data components. I would like to see how the are written. Being able to decompile swc would be a neat trick also.

I think the so think one is better because of how it lets you get the scripts easier.
