Learn SQL/XML (SQL/XML Video Demonstrations)

Working with Relational and XML data? SQL/XML is an extension of the existing SQL standard that allows you to query relational data and render the results as XML. Stylus Studio® DB-to-XML Data Sources (DB-to-XML Data Sources) automate database connectivity and SQL/XML creation, speeding access to data. Stylus Studio provides two ways to define DB-to-XML Data Sources — Using the File explorer, and the DB-to-XML Editor. Both of these exciting features are showcased in their own video demonstration below.

Part I: Accessing Relational Databases as XML with Stylus Studio's File Explorer

This demonstration is the first part of our series on working with relational and XML data, and covers the following topics:

Click here to view Creating SQL/XML with Stylus Studio®!

  • Creating a connection to a relational database — for example, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM DB2, Informix and Sybase
  • Creating the database connection string including server name, user name and password
  • Browsing database tables, views, schemas and other database objects from within the Stylus Studio file explorer
  • Writing an XQuery expression that accesses a relational data source
  • Understanding and using the XQuery collection function
  • Specifying which XQuery processor to use, for example, DataDirect XQuery or the built-in Stylus Studio XQuery processor.
  • Executing an XQuery application that accesses a relational database and previewing the resulting XML output in Stylus Studio.

Part II: Using Stylus Studio's Database-to-XML Editor to Query and Update Relational Databases using SQL/XML

The second part of our series on working with relational and XML data covers the following topics:

Click here to view Accessing Relational Data with the URL Builder!

  • Creating a relational data source using the DB-to-XML Editor to connect to SQL Server, Oracle, IBM DB2, Sybase, Informix and other ODBC compliant databases.
  • Specifying database connection properties including the server URL, username and password.
  • Connecting to a relational database and browsing database objects including databases, tables, views and metadata.
  • Understanding the SELECT tab for using SQL/XML to query relational databases.
  • Understanding the UPDATE tab to push XML data back into a relational database.
  • Querying a relational database as XML using Stylus Studio's drag and drop user-interface that can automatically generate SQL/XML code.
  • Using the XMLELEMENT function to define relational-to-XML mappings according to the SQL/XML standard.
  • Executing a SQL/XML query and previewing the results in Stylus Studio's XML text view and XML grid view.
  • Creating the SQL/XML statement needed to insert new rows into a database table.
  • Using the relational database connection as a target data source in the XSLT mapper.
