Mozilla's recent announcement about the shutdown of its Pocket service has taken many users by surprise. We wanted to share some thoughts as a farewell message to Pocket and to talk about the available options for Pocket users looking for a new platform.

Pocket and the early days of wallabag

Back in 2013, Google decided to kill one of its most famous product, Google Reader. As a Pocket user at that time, Nicolas asked himself what would happen to his data and all these saved articles if Pocket decided to do the same. Then, wallabag was born. Well, it was known under the name "poche" in its early days, which means "pocket" in French, and for the fun fact, the change of name is a result of a trademark issue with... Pocket's company, Read It Later, Inc. Therefore, poche became wallabag in early 2014.

In 2017 Mozilla Corporation announced the acquisition of Pocket and planned to open-source the server part, which was never fully done.

So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish, Pocket; Or we should say: thanks for pushing us to change our name and thanks for streamlining read-it-later apps.

Surviving the web by being open

It's always bittersweet to watch a service shutting down, especially when this one was widely known and used. Omnivore is another read-it-later service that was shut down in late 2024. In both cases it was the decision of a for-profit corporation killing a product they bought. Mozilla explained that their decision was made because "the web and the way we are using it changed a lot". Even though this statement is true, we still strongly believe in giving power to people and helping them to keep control of their data and privacy.

That's why we still continue to develop wallabag, 12 years after its creation.

Migrate from Omnivore to wallabag

The read-it-later app Omnivore recently announced that it is joining the ElevenLabs company. Unfortunately, as part of this process, they also announced that the service will be shut down, and all user data will be deleted at the end of November.

We understand that this situation may be frustrating and unsettling. We are actively working on an Omnivore importer so you can transfer your content to wallabag.

In the meantime, as this work is still in progress, we strongly recommend that you request an export of your Omnivore data as soon as possible. This data will be provided in a zip archive, and once our importer is released, you will be able to add your saved content.

Please note that, at least for now, the importer is not expected to support highlights.

About wallabag 2.7.0

Last year, @j0k3r opened "Upcoming wallabag version 3.0.0 & 2.6.0".

🚀 Since this discussion, we released 2.6.0 (and patches). These releases contains fixes and lots of technical stuff to go forward with our stack (Symfony 4.4). Thank you @yguedidi.

About 3.0.0, nothing has changed. You can read again what we decided here https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag/discussions/6177.

Because wallabag 3.0.0 will be released when it will be ready (in wallabag team, there is no pressure and no releases calendar), we added a new milestone: 2.7.0.

This release will contain lots of new features. You can have a look here to see those already implemented.

👉 To avoid upgrade issues (as we had with 2.6.0), we'll publish beta releases in coming weeks. I hope that the great wallabag community will help us to test this new version 😊

We also try to update a large part of the translations: I will publish an announcement on weblate (https://hosted.weblate.org/projects/wallabag/). If you want to fix or improve your language in wallabag, don't hesitate to join us 🫶

We accept contributions (fixes and new features, translations, websites configuration, and so on) so contact us if you have ideas ❤️

Today, we want to promote a great feature of wallabagger, our browser addon (available on Firefox ❤️, Chrome or Opera).

This new feature was implemented few weeks ago and it allows you to fetch content from the browser by default: you can say goodbye to paywalls 🎉!

⚠️ We had issues with our update process in 2.6.0 release: this release fixes one of them. Be careful, it may possible that we have other unknown issues. Please do backups.

If you have issue with this issue You have requested a non-existent service "scheb_two_factor.security.google_authenticator"., please read this message.

⚠️ There are two points to focus for that update:

We added new fields in the database, don't forget to run migration (by running make update) otherwise your wallabag won't work.
We've updated the mailer config which needs to be replicated otherwise it might not work.

We removed in app/config/parameters.yml:
- mailer_transport
- mailer_user
- mailer_password
- mailer_host
- mailer_port
- mailer_encryption
- mailer_auth_mode
And we added mailer_dsn as a replacement. Here is an example of DSN: smtp://user:pass@smtp.example.com:port

Update your instance

📈 To update your instance, just run make update. Don't forget to make a backup of your instance (database and files).

wallabag 🦘turns 10 🎂 ! To celebrate this birthday, we are pleased to announce the release of wallabag 2.6.0.

We developed this release during a year and I want to thank each of the contributors.

I hope you will love the new features and the fixes we made.

Have a look on some new features

wallabag is 10: it's starting to get a little rusty. That's why we made a lot of effort to improve technical stuff, under the hood. Most of this work was done by Yassine: thank you so much! Thanks to him, wallabag can go forward (for the next 10 years?).

Mass action to tag entries, by @Kdecherf

We now have a nice interface on card view (thank you, @Simounet!). A checkbox is available on each card.

And Kevin added the mass tagging feature: what a pleasure to add many tags on several articles!

Enhance the availability of the add a new URL in the web interface, by @Simounet

The "+" icon in the header bar is not so big. When you have a lot of URL to save, it can be painful to click exactly on the icon.

@Simounet increased the clickable area and you can now click on all the header bar.

New setting to show / hide articles thumbnails, by @nicosomb

@Oppen asked us to add a new setting to show or hide articles thumbnails.

This feature is so useful for slow connections or for instances which have few resources.

That's why we developed it for 2.6.0. See below the result when you chose to hide thumbnails.

Hello!

We want to give you some news about wallabag ecosystem.

Website 🚀

As you can see (no!), we now have a new website.

It's the same website (same design and same content). But it's now open source and you can help us to improve it. It's powered by Eleventy and hosted on Netlify.

The RSS feed is now available at wallabag.org/feed.xml and the old URL redirects to the new one (a RSS link will be soon available).

wallabag 2.6.0 ⏰

The next wallabag release will be 2.6.0 and will be released in the next weeks.

We worked on things under the hood and some new great features.

Before releasing it, we want to launch a call 📣 to our translators team: please have a look to the weblate dashboard and check if you can translate some missing strings.

Looking for volunteers ❤️

As you know, maintaining a project like wallabag is a lot of work.

That's why we are always looking for volunteers to help us to develop it: translations, third-party apps, documentation, etc.

Upcoming wallabag version 3.0.0 & 2.6.0

Hello everyone,

The latest version of wallabag is using Symfony v3.4.49 which hasn't been maintained since November 2020 and without security fixes since November 2021.

@yguedidi started to work on migrating/updating some parts of wallabag to remove deprecations, update services and many other changes in the code base in order to be able to upgrade Symfony.
Right now, the master of wallabag is running on Symfony v4.4.49 and we'll soon upgrade to Symfony 5.

While moving to Symfony 5 we also wanted to raise the minimum PHP version from 7.4 to 8.0.

We are now working on moving to Symfony Flex which "is so convenient and improves your productivity so much that it's strongly recommended". The main change of Symfony Flex is the directory structure.
It changes completely from the previous directory structure we are currently using:

assets moved in a different directory
config files are exploded by packages
parameters are now defined in an environment file
there are no bundles anymore (we were using AnnotationBundle, ApiBundle, CoreBundle, ImportBundle & UserBundle)
templates are now in a single place, like translations & migrations
etc.

We were planning to push all these upgrades (Flex & Symfony 5 & PHP 8) to the version 2.6.0.
But the more we are working on that technical upgrade the more we think it will be a complex upgrade for people running a wallabag instance mostly because of the directory structure change.

3.0.0

That's why we decided to put all these technical upgrades into a new breaking change version: 3.0.0.

For people using wallabag as a service (like those who have a subscription plan on https://www.wallabag.it/en (thanks you 🫶)), they won't notice a single change. There won't be functional change on how they use wallabag.
For people hosting wallabag, it'll be an upgrade more significant than just running make update.

We would like to put these technical changes into 3.0.0:

Symfony 6
PHP 8.1 or higher
new directory structure

Of course, we will recommend to everyone to upgrade to 3.0.0 as soon as the version is released but we'll also have a 2.x branch where we might still provide some bug fix for people who don't want to upgrade right now. But keep in mind that as soon as the 3.0 will be released, we'll be more focused on that version than on the older one.

Some features planned for 3.0 will be postponed to 4.0 others will be for 3.1.0.

2.6.0

In the coming days (or maybe weeks) we'll release the 2.6.0 which will upgrade Symfony from 3.4 to 4.4.
It'll resolve a lot of bugs for people running wallabag on PHP 8 for example.
The required PHP version will stay the same as before: 7.4 or higher.

⚠️ Important note:

we dropped support for PHP < 7.4.
the 2.6.0 release should drop PHP < 8.0.

Why we won't accept all your pull requests or feature requests

Today, I will try to explain why our team won't accept all your pull requests or feature requests.

Some features were requested years ago. Especially content edition (here, here or here) or « RSS to wallabag » implementation.

About content edition

wallabag is a read-it-later application. Its main feature is to archive a web article. You send a URL to wallabag, and wallabag saves the page content at time T. If the online page is updated or deleted, wallabag keeps the version.
wallabag takes a snapshot of a web article, and that's all.

But why can we edit the article title into wallabag? Because the title is displayed on the list page, and it can be more useful to find an article if you changed the title.

About « RSS to wallabag »

This feature is not in the wallabag DNA. With wallabag, we want to to do one thing (to archive a web article) and we want to do it well.

Today, a lot off RSS readers can be plugged to wallabag (for example: Miniflux, Vienna RSS, FreshRSS, Tiny Tiny RSS, Leed, FeedReader or Fiery Feeds). They do the job.

RSS agreggation is a specific and complex job. We don't want to reinvent the wheel in our application. To develop this feature would take us time, and we're not sure to implement as well as you expect.

Moreover, if we add more features to our application, we'll increase wallabag complexity and it will be harder to maintain it.

More generally

More generally, keep in mind that the wallabag roadmap is managed by the core team and the core team will always have the last word on adding a new feature.

The problem is not to develop the requested feature: it's about the direction we wish to take for wallabag. So even if someone develops one of these features and opens a new pull request, we don't have to accept it.

Here is the latest release of wallabag. What changed?

It's a maintenance release, no big changes inside that release. It's mostly to catch up after almost a year without one release.

Site-configs were almost a year behind (17 versions behind exactly).
A lot of JS package were totally outdated (yes jQuery is still outdated...).
Also wallabag is now compatible with PHP 8.0 & 8.1 !

wallabag for iOS v6 is there

After several months on other personal project, it was time for me to work again on the ios version of wallabag. This version with a major tag includes only a few new visible functionality.

Many commit by weblate and "build", I think I could do better on this side to make the git more readable.

The tree that hides the forest

There is a lot of change in the code. Migrate code to SwiftUI 2.

The code no longer uses the old boot system, everything is migrated to @main (the new app lifecycle).

AnyView (tweak with SwiftUI 1 and not required with SwiftUI 2) is removed from the "custom router" We can hope for better performance.

What next ?

I think I'll be working now to transform the project back to the code base multiplatform. It's a huge step to take ... but the result will be an iPhone, iPad, and MacOs Application!

The base is there, it is stable. It still lacks features, annotation, better tag support, deeper search.

I also dream of integrating the tag suggestion thanks to machine learning based on your articles (This is possible while respecting privacy thanks to the ML build on your iPhone, you can not imagine how powerful your iPhone is !!! )

We've also added a new command to clean downloaded images (for those who have enabled download images locally). You can try it to see how much spaces it'll free:

Technical changes

Support for PHP 7.4

The 2.3.8 lacked support for PHP 7.4 but, hey, that wallabag 2.3.8 was released in May 2019 and PHP 7.4 first alpha goes out in June 2019. Maybe we should have release 2.3.9 with PHP 7.4 support but there was too much stuff in the master and lack of motivation to only keep commits which enabled support. I hope we'll be more reactive for PHP 8.0 :)

Dropped support for PHP < 7.2

We removed support for PHP < 7.2 because lower version aren't supported by PHP itself. First we remove support for PHP < 7.1 back in Novembre 2018 https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag/pull/3758 and then support for PHP < 7.2 in June 2020.

Some people will arg that we should keep the lowest version possible because some folks are maintaining outdated version of PHP but we need to move on. Also, security support for PHP 7.2 will end in November 2020 but we think it's too fast for most people. Also Symfony still required PHP >=7.2.5 for the current master (the upcoming 5.2.0).

Translations in Weblate

The whole application is now connected to the Weblate platform which allow anyone to contribute to the translation without having to use Git at all. There are multiple sources in Weblate for the wallabag project because the iOS & Android app are also using it.

The application is now fully translated in 10 languages! :fr: :us: :cn: :kr: :jp: :netherlands: :ru: :tr: :de: :es: It's amazing. ✏️ Feel free to improve translations.

Hashed URLs for faster check

PR #3158

People using the API to save contents often have to check if the URL already exists in the database. Using the plain URL to check wasn't fast enough and it can lead to privacy leak (see https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag/pull/4361#issuecomment-723572855). That's why there is now a hash of the URL for each entry. Don't forget to run the command php bin/console --env=prod wallabag:generate-hashed-urls after upgrading to 2.4.0.

URLs are hashed using sha1.

Add basic search endpoint

The API now expose a basic search endpoint. We declare it as basic because it's a simple search in the database (like the one in the web interface). No robust search engine were involved in that change.

How to upgrade

perform a backup of the database (just in case)
run make update from your wallabag directoy
run php bin/console --env=prod wallabag:generate-hashed-urls which will generates a hash of URL for all saved entries (improve API search+++)

It’s now time to present you this new great version.

What’s new?

Sites with paywall

In wallabag 2.2, we added the availability to save articles on websites who an authentication is required. It was a little bit tricky to configure, because you needed to edit files.

But our so great @j0k3r created an interface to easily handle your credentials.

In Site credentials, you need to create a new credential by typing the domain name (without the https://www. part – we'll improve it soon), your username and your login. All is encrypted in your database. If you want more details, you can read the specifications here.

Today, you can save articles from NextInpact.com, ArretSurImages.net, Mediapart.fr, Monde-diplomatique.fr, CourrierInternational.com and in coming days, Alternatives-Economiques.fr, Telegraph.co.uk, LeFigaro.fr and LeMonde.fr will be available. If you want to add new websites, please contact us.

Other features

you can now remove all your archived entries by one click (on the config screen)
we store publication date and author of each article if our system can detect them
we added a notmaches operator for the automatic tagging rules (available on the config screen)
there is a confirmation when you want to delete an article to avoid mistake
we added tags on the list view

With almost 4 months delay, our new version, wallabag 2.2, is here. We originally planned to release it on October 3rd, 2016. Don’t worry, we didn’t go on holiday. We kept working hard. It’s now time to present you this new great version.

What’s new?

Account managemenent

In wallabag 2.1, we gave you the possibility to manage your users.

In wallabag 2.2, we now give you the possibility to reset and delete your own account.

On the configuration screen of your account, in the user information tab, you now have a danger zone. Take care, these actions are IRREVERSIBLE.

delete your account

Two useful enhancements for developers: annotations and entries export are now available in the API.

Export entries

The endpoint is /api/entries/123/export.epub to export the entry 123 in epub (available formats: epub, mobi, pdf, txt, csv).

This feature is already used by Plop! reader, a wallabag application for Pocketbook Touch Lux ereaders, by pmartin.

One more thing… the authentication for restricted access articles (behind a paywall)

Thanks to this feature, you can now save articles from websites who authentication is required.

This great feature is only available for advanced users, and for now the credentials are shared with all the users of an instance. We’ll add an easy to use interface in next release.

You need to edit your app/config/parameters.yml file to edit credentials for each website with paywall. Here is an example for some french websites:

Warning : These credentials will be used for each user of your wallabag instance.

First of all, we wish you a happy new year.

Let's take a look back. 2016 was a great year for our team:

our project was 3 years old.
we released wallabag 2.0
we talked about wallabag at PHP Tour (french article), a french conference about PHP.
we released a new iOS application
we released wallabag 2.1
we released a new addon for Chrome, also compatible with Firefox and Opera. More details in this blog post.
we launched wallabag.it, a quality service for using wallabag. For only €12 per year, you'll get a quality hosting, a professional support, automatic upgrades and daily backups.

We had a roadmap for the last year. One missing thing: wallabag 2.2. We failed to release it on 2016: it's only because this release will be huge and we still have some work to do on. You can have a look on the changelog of this version here. Stay tuned, wallabag 2.2 will be available in coming weeks.

We don't have yet a roadmap for this new year, but we're sure this year will be awesome, like the previous ones. As you can see, we worked on a new website. More professional, easier to find information, more beautiful: we hope you like it. We now have an english and a french website (german translation will be available in coming days).If you find some bugs on this new website, contact us.

[New release] wallabag 2.1.1

We released wallabag 2.1.0 yesterday and we need to release this patch now. We made some mistakes with the installation and update process.
In fact, we screwed up with the assets by adding npm in the installation process. Now, we do this operation during the build process, not on your webserver.

After the upgrade, you can delete the node_modules directory.

Before upgrading, don't forget to backup your database.

Specific update method for this version

If your version is 2.2.0, just execute make update. If your version is <= 2.1.6.1, execute make update then php bin/console doctrine:migrations:migrate --no-interaction -e=prod to execute database migrations.

[New release] wallabag 2.1, best version since 2.0.0

Six months ago, we released wallabag 2.0. And exactly 3 years ago, we launched wallabag 1.0. A big step in our short life: we rewrote the whole application to propose to you many great features. And it was also easier for us to develop with the help of the Symfony framework.

Since this release, we've worked on fixes (we released 8 patches) and we developed many new features for wallabag 2.1.

Now, it's time to take a look at these new features!

Import from ...

The recent news (Instapaper is joining Pinterest, The Readability bookmarking service will shut down on September 30, 2016) in the read-it-later ecosystem encouraged us to change our roadmap. We planned to work on the Tags feature for this 2.1 version but we worked hard on importing your data from 3rd-party services (but we've also made a few changes on the tags feature !).

... Readability

At the end of August, Readability announced that its general public service will shut down on September 30. One day after this announce, j0k3r developed a Readability import. It's easy to use, you just need to select your Readability export on your computer and import it.

... Instapaper

The Instapaper service will not shut down (at least not right now), but it has been acquired by Pinterest. If you think that it's time to migrate to wallabag, our new importer is for you.

... Firefox and Chrome

In your favorite browser, you can save bookmarks, thousands of bookmarks. Now, you can also import them into wallabag. It's a just a file to export from your browser and import into your wallabag interface.

Asynchronous import will save your life (and your server!)

OK, you can import thousand of articles, but your web server can't process so much data: you'll most probably end up with a timeout error if you try to import too many articles.

This problem exists in wallabag for years.

That's why we worked on a system to fetch content and import articles into wallabag asynchronously: you ask wallabag to import your articles, wallabag saves all the URLs of these articles and then, a queue system fetches content while you're using wallabag.

In order to use this feature, wallabag needs Redis or RabbitMQ. The wallabag documentation explains how to configure these services.

Beware : these services will certainly not be available if you use shared hosting.

You can finally manage your users

You can now easily create, delete or edit an account in your wallabag instance.
As an administrator of wallabag, you'll have a new interface, available in the menu: Users management.

You like an article? Share it with your friends!

This feature was claimed for months (on 2 August, 2013!). You can now share an article publicly: by clicking on the share menu in the sidebar of the article, you can generate a public link and share it on your favorite social network!
Like inside your wallabag, the article is displayed in a comfortable view.

Dmitriy Bogdanov (@di72nn) worked really hard on the Android app and came out with the following new features :

A background service

It handles offline actions, like saving an article offline, marking an article as read, favoriting it or deleting it. These actions are then executed when it's possible.

Automatic sync

You can sync local changes and download eventual new articles on a defined schedule. Local changes can also be synched as soon as the network is available. Finally, it's possible to download an article you just added.

A new connection wizard

It helps you connecting to your wallabag instance. Just choose your instance or define its address, put it your credentials, and the wizard will automatically fetch connection informations.

Notifications !

You get notifications when the app is syncing, and when an error occurs.

A proper preferences screen

We got rid of the old ugly screen. Every option is saved when you change it.

Some history, some thanks

Three years ago, I started a little script, to replace the closed service I used to use (french article). It was a personal script, that I hosted on GitHub. I never realized that people could be interested with it.

You are more than 8.900 users on Framabag, you are more than 1.800 fans on GitHub, wallabag 1.x was downloaded more than 33.400 times, we released so many versions with so many features, and our history can still go on.

To all of our users: Merci.

If our project is still alive today, it's also thanks to Thomas Citharel (@tcitworld). When I was not available for the project, he was always here to fix bugs or to reply to your questions. Merci Thomas!

wallabag v2 is in my head for more than 2 years. But this version that we release today is also here thanks to Jérémy Benoist (@j0k)): without his help on many technical subjects, wallabag v2 wouldn't exist. Merci Jérémy!

Managing such a project like wallabag is so exciting (but it's also very tiring). Today, it's a big part of my personal life, that's why I also want to thank my wife, because it's not easy every day to share your life with a wallaby. Merci Audrey!

If you don't have it yet, please install composer. Then you can install wallabag by executing the following commands:

On a shared hosting

The default configuration uses SQLite for the database. If you want to change these settings, please edit app/config/parameters.yml.

We already created a user (login and password are wallabag). This user is only available if you use SQLite database.

Warning: With this package, wallabag don't check mandatory extensions used in the application (theses checks are made during composer install when you have a dedicated web server, see above).

Roadmap for wallabag v2

As you saw last weeks, we worked very hard on wallabag v2 and we released two alpha (alpha.1 and alpha.2).

Today, we can try to have a real roadmap for this year. You can follow our roadmap on GitHub, we update it very often.

First beta

We planned to released our first public beta on 1st March.

We still have some issues to fix and pull requests to merge in the 10 days to come. If some issues won't be fixed, it's not a problem to release the beta version (we can move the issues to an other release).

During one month, you'll be invited to try this beta, we'll fix some bugs but we won't add any more features.

Other betas?

If it's necessary (and I'm sure it'll be), we'll release other beta versions.

Final version

Wow :') Finally.

I can announce you that we want to release this version, 2.0, on the 3rd of April (wallabag birthday, it will be 3 years old!).

Maybe dates will change (wallabag is a volunteer project, we also have other priorities), but we'll do everything we can to release wallabag v2 on the 3rd of April.

We finally implement oAuth2 in wallabag v2.

This blog post is here to explain to you how you can integrate your application to wallabag v2.

For each call to our API, you need a token. If you do a call without token, you will have this message: OAuth2 authentication required.

For example, try this command:

NOTE: the following commands make use of the HTTPie library. Make sure it is installed on your system before using it.

To create a token for a given user, you need a client id and a client secret. As we are still in alpha, we create a client for you (but in few weeks, each application will have its own client id and client secret).

The access_token is useful to do a call to the API endpoint. For example:

wallabag is an open source read-it-later application.

We started developing wallabag in 2013 using PHP classes but quickly ran into many limitations: no API, database fields missing, etc.). So, we decided to re-write it from scratch, this time using a framework. After many stalled attempts, we're proud to say that v2 is almost here!

In 2014, Jérémy Benoist (aka @j0k3r) joined us. He is an awesome Symfony lead developer! With his help, we were finally able to ramp up production on a new and improved rebuild of wallabag.

While we're not quite finished integrating all of the features from from wallabag v1, we felt it was time to release our first alpha of wallabag v2 into the wild so we could start to gather some feedback.

This is a big step in wallabag's development and we're all very proud of what we've accomplished so far.

A word about our browser extensions

It's been a week since we've released v1.9.1 and it seems there's no major bug coming out. That's great, because it leave us time to work on v2. We'll show you how much we've progressed later, I just wanted to say a word about our browser extensions.

Chrome Extension

The chrome extension has been updated with the right click-menu function named Add page to wallabag, as you can see on the picture below.

This update has been pushed three days ago on the Chrome Web Store, so you should have got it by now.

Opera Extension

Although Opera is having a hard time right now, we don't forget users who use this browser. So we added a documentation chapter in order for users to install it, while the extension is currently submitted and is awaiting validation. It's far from perfect (the right-click menu item opens a new window), but hey it's here. We'll update this post to share with you the URL of the Opera Extension Repository when we'll get it.

Firefox Social API

Some of you may have missed it, but since Firefox 38.0.5, Pocket is integrated by default in Mozilla's browser. We were quite sad about this integration which surprised us. So we wrote to Mozilla and they said they were working on something so that other read-it-later services can be included. We'll see about that. And we're eager to work with you, red panda !

Apart from this, we've launched with wallabag 1.9.1 the wallabag Firefox Service (go into Config to discover it - https needed). It's quite basic, but it will be much more elaborated with wallabag v2 and it's API, just like all extensions and mobile apps.

wallabag v2

Now for the big stuff. It comes. There have been quite some work, but the most important thing right now is the arrival of a new theme in material style logically called material. This theme should be the main one on v2. We all can thank Alexandr Danilov for his work.

The best news is that you can test it yourself at v2.wallabag.org. Just keep in mind that it's in alpha state, and many features are missing. But it's just a matter of time.

We are happy to announce you the release of wallabag v1.9.1. Unlike what it seems, it's quite an important version (it's just between 1.9 and 2.0). A whole number of bugs have been corrected, some translations added, many config websites files added, and there's also a handful of new features we hope you'll like.

Features

Buttons to go to next and previous article when you view an article.
Button to mark article as read and go to next unread article.
Keyboard shortcuts. Lots of them. And vim-style navigation (see below).
Gestures on touch screens. Swipe to left or right to navigate to next or previous articles.
Toolbar also at the bottom of the article with baggy theme, you don't have to scroll back any more when finished !
While you tag an article, you now see all the existing tags. Just click on them to add it to this article. And the more used are shown bigger.
Mozilla Sharing Service ! You will need https to activate it, but it's worth the try, you can get rid of the old extension and use the build-in sharing from Firefox.
Import Netscape-formated-bookmarks. This allows import of Firefox, Internet Explorer (I know, right !), Chrome browsers bookmarks. And certainly many other tools and applications.
If you're using a reverse proxy, you might interested by the BASE_URL constant.

Shortcuts

Article view

Navigate between articles: arrows or vim style (h for left, l for right)
d or del to delete article
f to toggle favorite status
m to toggle mark as read status
n to mark as read and redirect to the next article

Unread / Favorite / Archive view

with arrows, you can navigate into articles (vim style is also available with h, j, k, l) and press Enter to read the article!

Session issues

It's no secret that we've had kind of a hard deal to fix sessions issues. You always ended up disconnected after a while. The thing is, just a little configuration should get rid of this issues. Checkout the documentation there.

This bug is already fixed on Framabag.org.

wallabag v2

This is the end of wallabag as we know it. ~~We launch our premium version~~ We get rid of the old code. We've rebuild wallabag using Symfony2 and it's now much better to work efficiently with clean code.

We will release a first alpha release of wallabag 2.0 in september 2015. You can follow latest news on twitter, gitter or diaspora*.

April update : some news

No april's fool this year, but just some news to keep you updated on our work.

Work towards 1.9.1 version

First of all, there's quite a few bugs which have been corrected, especially with installation part (still...). Also, a couple of annoying graphic bugs are now gone. An updated Docker image is also on track.

Now, talking about some features, I know we said we wouldn't add any more to 1.x versions, that everything will go to v2, but that kind of work will benefit to all versions anyway. And those are little ones, don't get excited. ;)

I'm happy to announce next versions will feature previous and next navigation buttons just next to the already existing "return to top" one with baggy theme. Default theme and inherited themes will have those buttons in the existing toolbar.

You will also be able to navigate through articles by using your right and left keyboard arrows on desktop, or swipe right or left on touchscreen devices. Maybe we could enable vim-style navigation (with hjkl) in the future (there's a poll, by the way).

For an increased usability, we also added a Mark as read and go to next button, when you've finished to read an article and do want to go for the next time directly.

Also, about the toolbar, we added it at the bottom of articles seen with baggy theme, so that you don't have to go all the way to top when wanting to do an action.

Finally, we now display existing tags when you want to add a tag to an article, in order to avoid having close duplicates and not thinking to tags you already have. You will just have to click on a tag to add it to the list. And, the larger the size of the tag displays, the more it's used, like a tag cloud.

Before wallabag 1.9.1 comes out, we just want to fix a nasty issue with installation with old MySQL versions and it should be ready to go. It could be possible to see a 1.9.2 version come out, though.

Work on v2 version

If you follow our Github page, you may have seen a lot of Pull Request ready to merge or already merged. That's a very good sign. Of the new things that are coming, the API is certainly the most important. Documentation is already available and we will provide a guide very soon to connect your app to wallabag. Speaking of apps, the Windows version is the first app currently rewritten for v2 by @jlnostr. Others should follow soon, no worries. Most of the job on wallabag v2 is currently done by @j0k3r, so now you know who to thank.

Other news

We may attend to the 16th Libre Software Meeting from 2015/07/04 to 2015/07/10 in Beauvais, France. Comme and see us, we'll have stickers !

Also, Pyves created cool slides to present our wallabag hosted service, Framabag.

And finally, we already had wallabag integrated inside YunoHost (source) and ArkOS (source), but we're now hoping to get wallabag inside CozyCloud. We'll also try to have it OwnCloud too.

Finally. Four months later, here is it. The version 1.9 of wallabag. Of course, we bring up new features, we fixed many bugs, but we have also quite exiting news for the future.

Mobi & PDF export

First of all, we know some of you love reading articles saved with wallabag on your tablet or e-ink reader, so we've given you the ability to export your articles as epub a while back. But since there are users who have choosen a Kindle or some other tablets which can only handle mobi export, we give you mobi export.

Yes, we know that Amazon provides this kind of service called Send2Kindle, but it's kind of hard to implement, even though we are still thinking to work on it. Read more.

Oh, and while we've at exporting articles, you can also export articles as pdf. Just like you already did with mobi and epub export. You can enable both of those features in the inc/poche/config.inc.php file. Look at the inc/poche/config.inc.default.php file to see what configuration you need to add if you're migrating.

Sharing with services

We want wallabag to be compatible with the maximum of services. For that, we have waited long for v2 to come with it's API (more on that later) but for now we just let you export your articles to Evernote, Carrot and Diaspora. Just enable these features like the others, into the config file. In the case of Diaspora, you also need to provide the URL for your pod.

New installer

Finally, we've seen many users having problems (mostly database and file rights related) with the installation, so we rewrote much of the installer to make sure these problems won't occur anymore.

Moreover, the installer tells you right away if your webserver configuration has problems or can run wallabag right away.

Diverse features, improvements and bugs

Now for some little features :

Random article : Don't know what to read ? Just click on the dices to get one of your unread articles.
Refetch article : Some article has changed it's content ? Just refetch it.
Import tags : You can now import tags from your Pocket and wallabag exported files.
Build-in documentation : If you have wallabag locally installed and are offline for the moment. Just a reminder to tell you that online documentation is available at http://doc.wallabag.org/
Tag an article when saving it. Instead of saving an article, accessing it and setting the tags from here, just click on the tag icon next to the url field before hitting the Save button. At the moment, it is possible only to do this from the web interface, but it could come to some apps or extensions.

And in other changes, we've deleted the courgette theme, which started to be a bit old in regard of the features we brought recently. It's creator said he would be glad to bring a new theme in the future, though.

We've got also a lot of improvements, translations updated and diverse bugs corrected, but I admit there are really too many for me to list them here.

##Register

Oh, wait. I've forgotten something. And it's quite important. There's now new lines in the config file which allow the adminstrator of a wallabag server to enable public registration.

You read that right.

If you want to share your instance with someone else, no need to create him an account yourself.

All the user needs is an username and a password. And if he provides it's email, he will get a nice confirmation email (which will probably go right into his spam inbox, but that's another issue).

Upgrading from an older version

If you already have an other version of wallabag installed, just copy the new files over the old ones, maybe check your rights on the files, and access your wallabag instance. In case something doesn't work, all you need to do is to delete the install/ folder.

Future of wallabag

wallabag 1.9 should be the last version with new features. We will surely have at least a 1.9.1 version for bug fixes, but most of our work is now focused on wallabag v2, where @nicosomb and @j0k3r have started an amazing job. In fact, there's already a (working !) preview available at http://v2.wallabag.org/ (login/password : wallabag/wallabag). What do you think about the theme ?

v2 is build with Symfony2, a robust and powerful PHP framework. It allows us to design wallabag much better, to have a full view of what it must be, much better that the 1.x versions which are quite an ugly patchwork of code. Now, we're nearly starting over from scratch, but it's quite pleasant.

The v2 version will finally allow us to provide the API we've so much dreamed of, so that any app can be connected to wallabag and benefit of all it's features, whether it's a mobile app, a browser extension or another web service.

We look forward to release some previews for v2 when it's ready, and hear from you.

Hello everybody,

We are proud to launch a new website. We want to make contributions easier and thus decided to drop Wordpress. We moved to Pelican instead, a great static site generator.

There are several advantages with this new engine as you'll see them in the coming weeks.

The webdesign was kept very simple as it isn't our priority: we want to have this great tool for publishing.

One folder per language. All this documentation is written in Markdown.

This documentation is a user documentation, not a technical one. We'll explain all wallabag's features. All the documentation is not yet written, we are working on it, but you can start translating.

Yesterday was a big day: it was wallabag birthday. On 3 April 2013, we wrote the first lines of poche, a little application to save web articles.

Our renaming history changed lot of things in our project.And the least we can say is that it has also changed my life.

Few weeks ago, Madan Nagaldinne, head of human resources at Facebook, contacted me to discuss about a project that the american firm has for several years: the possibility to save articles to read them later.

Put yourself in my place, I'm not a fan of this social network, but if I can be able to provide my family a very decent lifestyle is interesting. So without much hesitation, I accepted this new mission.

However, I had some conditions:

to leave the project open source
to still code it in PHP

It's a major version, but no big changes: it's only we change the application name.

New identity

We want to move forward, we don't want to waste time, we want to work on the version 2 of our application as soon as possible.

That's why we've decided that it was wiser for us, legally and especially ethically, to change our name and therefore our logo.

Our deferred reading application will now be called wallabag.

Choosing a name is not a small matter, it must:

have a meaning
be short
be readable by a maximum of people since our application is used in several countries
not be already used :)
have an available domain name and social network identifier.

This name must also be liked. But as you know, not everyone will like it.

Some explainations about his name: We derived from poche, to come to the wallaby, via the kangaroo. His pocket allows you to take away any thing you found interesting. The concept of bag, handbag, beggar's bag, suitcase, etc. came back frequently in your proposals.

All of that has given wallabag.

Concerning the logo, we will also move forward in the coming days.

But we should not loose too many time on that. Indeed, it's important, but the most important thing is the application you'll use everyday. That's what we must focus on.

After this episode, Vincent and I will take over the development of the v2, I hope it will be released in 2014. Will this version will come a lot of good things, like a collaboration with ownCloud, we're also discussing with Cozy, arkOS, YunoHost, etc. Our application should make everyone happy with smartphone apps that handle the offline storage.

We all have a lot of ideas (you and us): we just have to move forward.

Framasoft

For the French speakers, you may already know Framasoft. To sum up, Framasoft is an association that promotes open source. It has existed for ten years, and it employs a few persons.

A lot of projects are released every year by Framasoft, and one of them is Framacloud. Tho goal is to help people to use some open source softwares without the constraints of the installations, updates, etc.

Well … we know that! Yes, that's exactly what we propose too.

So our project will be a project of the Framasoft network. And it will be called Framabag.

For now, nothing will change. Well, almost nothing. But it insures an additional longevity to our project. The association will financially support us. We will come back on that point shortly.

Hey Nicolas,

I wanted to reach out and reply to your open letter directly.

I have no issue with you creating an open source service like Pocket. I’ve appreciated the number of similar products in our space as it means there are a lot more people helping to drive the idea and space forward. It's exciting to see it evolve and it's great that you are a part of that.

Likewise, I'm a strong believer in open source. I used to do volunteer work as an AMO Editor at Mozilla because I believed in what they were doing. I poured months of time into my own free, open source project, ShareKit, that hundreds of iOS apps have used to help users share with each other. And most importantly, without open source code to help in the early years, Pocket probably wouldn't be what it is today. Open source is a critical component for a flourishing development community.

Finally, I also understand what it's like to be a solo developer working on a project. For the first 3.5 years of it's life, Pocket was a solo, indie project and it was just me cranking away on it. There were a lot of potential scenarios to think about that kept me up at night.

That is why I was incredibly thoughtful about how I built this product and company. Because I wanted it to be around for a long time, it was important to me that it was built not just on a strong product foundation, but also a legal one too.

Two years ago, we decided to rebrand from Read It Later to Pocket. We spent a few months figuring out what name to build our future on. We had a list of names that was a mile long. There were others that we liked but that were already clearly established brands or conflicts and so we avoided them.

Unfortunately, “Poche”, which is literally the word “Pocket” in French, has created a strong likelihood of confusion and that's exactly what trademarks were created to help prevent. Confusion does not help anyone: our company nor yours. Most importantly, it does not help the users of our products if the two services end up confusing everyone. The confusion of our users is what we are trying to protect against.

“Poche” was clearly created as a service that was as close in name, brand and description to Pocket as possible. You have even described directly on its site specifically as an open source version of Pocket.

We registered the “Pocket” trademark as it relates to our products and services both in the United States and in the European Union, and our registration covers France. (See U.S. Trademark Reg. Nos. 4,354,899 and 4,354,900; Community Trademark No. 011111184.) Although we registered the English word, our trademark also protects us from the French-language equivalent when used on similar or related products or services.

If a foreign word or phrase translated into English is exactly the same as the existing English trademark, the marks are considered to be confusingly similar. As shown in cases such as Popular Bank of Florida v. Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, 9 F. Supp. 2d 1347, 1359 (S.D. Fla. 1998); General Conf. Corp. of Seventh-Day Adventists v. Perez, 97 F. Supp. 2d 1154 (S.D. Fla. 2000).

The U.S. courts and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office both apply this rule. So, for example, “LUPO” was found to be confusingly similar to “WOLF” (230 U.S.P.Q. 702), “CHAT NOIR” was confusingly similar to “BLACK CAT” (111 U.S.P.Q. 286), “MARCHE NOIR” was confusingly similar to “BLACK MARKET” (79 U.S.P.Q.2d 1021) and “LA PEREGRINA” was confusingly similar to “THE PILGRIM” (86 USPQ2d 1645).

Because you are using POCHE (which translates in English to POCKET) to offer a similar product and service, we believe our users around the world are likely to be confused and we have already started to see such confusion.

This is why I've asked you to change your service’s and company name and logo not to resemble Pocket. As one indie dev to another, my hope is that you'll find a name that is unique to you, your service and is something that you can build a true foundation on.

Hello Nate,

I’m glad you sent that mail instead of your law firm. You know, open-source communities are open-minded and discussing is always possible.

I’m aware of the potential problem it could be for you. And for us, ethically, it’s not so good to have that name. My application has to have its own identity.

On my side, I’d like to go ahead and don’t want to waste any more time with that point. My application name will change in the next few days, and the same will happen to the logo.

You can tell your law firm that I won’t reply.

As this discussion is not confidential, I’ll publish your answer and mine on my blog. I think that publishing your answer will show too your open-mindness. After that, I won’t publish anything else about that story.

Open letter addressed to Read It Later, Inc., creator of Pocket

On thursday, January the 23th 2014 I received from the law firm Shartsis Friese LLP a Cease & Desist letter labelled Trademark Infringement by "In the poche".

poche is a free (as in freedom) and open source application which allows saving Web contents for further reading developed by a single French individual (based in France). Its website is hosted at http://www.inthepoche.com and its source code is freely available at https://github.com/wallabag/wallabag.

Here are the claims:

I'm using the name poche — which is the French translation for the word Pocket — as well as mentionning read-it-later
The poche logo, which pictures a pocket, looks like yours
In this tweet https://twitter.com/wallabagapp/status/423786365944225792, I'm supposed to depict Pocket as being unfree

And here are the required actions I'm told by your lawyers before January the 31th, 2014:

cease and desist all infringing activity, including but not limited to using "poche", "read-it-later" or the infringing logo in connection with any software application
cease and desist from making any false statements of fact about Pocket in connection with advertising any competing applications, including but not limited to your assertion that Pocket is not free of charge to users.

So here's an official statement of mine regarding these claims & required actions:

I'm using the term poche for my app. This is indeed the French word for Pocket, but also a common word in French. Legally, nothing prevents me from using it.
The logo will be updated, I've already updated the poche twitter account avatar accordingly http://twitter.com/wallabagapp
All occurences of the name read-it-later have been removed from wallabag.org, and I'll delete all posts mentionning it from my social network accounts in the upcoming days
I've never defamed Pocket. I said on twitter that Pocket was a non-free application, which means proprietary software — which is actually true. To be nice to you, I've removed any mention of Pocket from the poche website where I simply mentioned that poche allows migration from a Pocket account to a poche one. Though if you don't mind I'll keep mentionning Pocket as an alternative to poche in this page http://www.inthepoche.com/poche-alternatives/

To summarize, I'd like to hear directly from you (so we avoid lawyer noise) about these changes : I'd like to keep using the poche name, the inthepoche.com domain and the @getpoche twitter account. I'm removing all mention of Pocket from the website and won't ever be mentioning you again in any poche public communications. Last, the logo will be updated.

Jonathan Gaulupeau has updated our Android application (this version is currently only available on Google Play): with this version, you can finally read your articles while being offline.

You have to use poche 1.3 (if your poche is hosted by us, it's good for you!) and RSS feeds must be enabled.

Known issues

If your poche is hosted by us, there is an encoding problem with titles.
When you mark as read an entry, this one stays unread on the web application.
You can't read your archives.
You can't star, delete your articles. You can only read articles.
Maybe other problems.
