John Leggett reposted thisJohn Leggett reposted thisYesterday, we launched our groundbreaking new report, Creating Value and Warming Homes, which reveals the significant social return on investment generated through funded fuel poverty programmes, including the Scottish Government's flagship Warmer Homes Scotland scheme. Hosted by BBC Scotland's Joy Dunlop, the event heard from our Chief Executive, Ross Armstrong, and Supply Chain Development Manager, Mike J Prior, who shared some of the report’s key findings. Based on a two-year survey of almost 1,000 Warmworks customers and 16 supply chain members, the report found that: • For every £1 invested in fuel poverty initiatives, £2.31 of social value has been created, with significant benefits to households, the retrofit sector, the wider economy, the environment, and public services. • Nearly three-quarters of our customers reported improvements to their health and wellbeing, and just as many reported feeling safer in their home. • Nearly half of homes with children said their children were doing better at school because they had a warm home. • Among supply chain members delivering the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme, around three-quarters said their involvement had enabled them to recruit additional employees and take on more apprentices and trainees. The audience also heard from Warmworks customers Anne and Tommy Murray, who shared first-hand how support through the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme to improve their home's energy efficiency has made a positive difference to their lives. John Leggett reposted thisEnergy bills to hit three-year high this winter. The price cap is set to rise another 4% in October, pushing the cost of average energy bills to their highest level since summer 2023, more than wiping out the impact of the promise to cut VAT from household electricity bills. The new advertised GB-wide average is £1,723/year. However, this figure is calculated assuming lower typical energy usage than in previous years. The high cost of energy has forced many households to use less gas and electricity as debt levels rise. Using the previous methodology, October’s cap figure is £1,935. In fact, like-for-like, October’s price cap level will be over £50 more than in April 2022, when the Welsh Government estimated up to 98% of all Wales’ low-income households could be living in fuel poverty. With energy debt reportedly at a record £6bn and counting, National Energy Action (NEA) Cymru continues to call for a comprehensive, more permanent set of solutions to address this. We believe the Welsh Government should: * work with UK Government and Ofgem to ensure both meaningful debt relief and deeper, targeted energy bill support are provided as a matter of urgency, as current arrangements fail to provide the help needed * keep a close eye on its own crisis support mechanisms this winter and strive to ensure the Warm Homes Programme goes further and faster to renew the homes of fuel poor households, making them more affordable and healthier places to live.

John Leggett liked thisJohn Leggett liked thisGood news for heat pumps. VAT is being abolished from domestic electricity costs from October, but not from gas. Whilst the cost of electricity is staying much the same, gas is increasing from 7.3p to 8.0p per unit. Electricity, at 26.3p will be 3.3 times more expensive than gas - the lowest ratio for a number of years (it was more than 4 times more expensive). Given the efficiencies of heat pumps they will be cheaper to operate than gas boilers at standard rates. If you have access to flexible tariffs, solar pv and/ or a battery then heat pumps will be much cheaper to operate than gas. https://lnkd.in/eGSSw8Nv

We were able to provide advice and small energy-saving measures such as shower timers to help mitigate householders having to pay even more for their energy usage when bills rise again.

John Leggett liked thisJohn Leggett liked thisOnce upon a time I had lunch with a former head of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service... Which could be the start of a very interesting story, if it wasn't for the fact I was a darker shade of orange than Donald Trump. My undergrad years at Pembroke College, Cambridge, coincided with Sir Richard Dearlove's tenure as Master. Once a term he would invite those of us studying PPS (Politics, Psychology and Sociology) and Anthropology for a fancy lunch in a fancy room to talk about global affairs that honestly none of us knew enough about to have an opinion on so we'd generally just try to be polite and not embarrass ourselves, which as you'll find out, I failed at MASSIVELY and if I hadn't been bright orange at the time I would have been bright red... So: The food was nice but to be honest the atmosphere was a bit awkward - as you'd expect from a bunch of geeky young adults and a MegaPerson like Dearlove. Funnily enough, I was also competing in Dancesport during that time. Think Strictly Come Dancing. Three applications of St.Tropez was the norm for a competition like Blackpool. The third was pretty itchy, so I had to apply them over several days. Otherwise I'd turn up to a competition with a bad rash. This meant wandering around Cambridge, very obviously fake tanned, for about a week beforehand and several days afterwards, while I tried to scrub it off. Yes, I know this is already a bit ridiculous. But we must suffer for our art. And because this is my life, one of Dearlove's lunches was obviously scheduled a day before a competition. Peak Tango. The worst part of it was that no one asked me why I was bright orange. So of course I spent the entire time trying to weave it into conversation. If you have a more embarrassing story of meeting a MegaPerson, while networking or public speaking, I will donate some money to our other orange friends, the orangutans. Comment below.
