Charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) is uniquely effective for analyzing large, heterogeneous biomolecular assemblies because it directly measures both the mass-to-charge ratio and charge of individual ions. Until now, high-performance ELIT-CDMS systems have largely been limited to a handful of specialized academic laboratories. A new bioRxiv preprint from Jakub Ujma and colleagues at Waters, working with Prof. Martin Jarrold and Megadalton Solutions, reports a significant advance—the first commercial benchtop ELIT-CDMS platform. By combining advanced performance with a compact, user-friendly design, this technology could expand access to high-resolution CDMS and accelerate research on viral vectors, VLPs, protein complexes, and other megadalton-scale analytes.
