Still polishing off your entries ahead of our final entry deadline? ✍️ Here are some top tips from one of our incredible judges, Kevin Edwards!
Really happy to judge the Rising Star at Performance Marketing Awards for a third year. It really is the best entry to judge as we get to speak to the nominees rather than just reading the words on the page. Huge thanks to the team there for inviting me back. If you're knee-deep in award entry hell, I thought I'd resurface a post I did almost a year ago based on my experience of writing dozens of the things and also judging several awards over the years. It's also worth reiterating that AI can help you finesse or structure your entry or find the word you need when your brain is fried, but its default hollow sentiment can't replace the heart of your team's work! Award entries are both time-consuming and expensive, so here's my recap of the most common mistakes I see people make when they write award entries... ➡️ Firstly, drop the superlatives. Without wanting to sound like a dick, the judges will decide whether what you've done is the best, most strategic or has exceeded expectations. The fact is, if your entry is strong, the facts should speak for themselves. Besides, if you ditch the descriptors, you'll free up 10-15% of your entry to describe what you did. If you're reliant on superlatives, perhaps your entry isn't as good as you think it is... ➡️ Secondly, facts, not feelings, are your friends. Reading how what you did was amazing and groundbreaking doesn't cut the mustard. I've read entries sometimes without a single traceable or trackable fact in them. Tell me what you did, not how you felt about it. Again, the judges can then decide how it stacked up against the campaign goals. ➡️ BAU in the bin. Take a step back and re-read your entry. Is there enough in there that is distinct and in the top 5% of what your clients or customers are doing? Bulking an entry with filler just because you did something obfuscates the message and detracts from the objectives. ➡️ The kitchen sink entry And on that note, throwing everything at the award makes the parts look greater than the sum. Identify a single goal at the outset and base everything you include in the entry on it. It makes the signposting for judges so much easier as they can keep referring back to your initial objectives. ➡️ Less is more. And the flip side to that is make your entry lean, focused and incisive. If you do all the above, the narrative should be clear and your performance obvious. Just because there's space, you don't have to use it. Judges will thank you for not forcing them to wade through paragraphs of filler just because you have the word count. And if you're still struggling for an incisive narrative, then you shouldn't be wasting your money on the entry. ➡️ Finally, writing is hard. We undervalue the ability to communicate effectively via the written word, so put your top wordsmiths on the job and give them plenty of time to finesse your work.
