Great to see our investee company, Anzana Electric Group get the recognition they deserve in this African Energy article. Anzana are showing that hydropower can play an important role in delivering reliable, dispatchable renewable energy in eastern and Southern Africa. Their focus on an integrated model that combines generation and transmission means that they can reach both industrial and household customers and they're playing a vital role in Zambia and Burundi's national electrification efforts. Recent deals in Zambia – including up to 50MW of supply to First Quantum Minerals and new transmission to connect mining demand – point to growing momentum. Those deals also point to a wider shift where small hydro with storage provides competitively priced power and helps balance variable renewables while supporting more resilient power systems. Investing in Africa's electricity networks. We're backed by the UK Government and British International Investment.
About us
A dedicated developer and investment platform for electricity network investments in Africa. We are owned and funded by British International Investment, and backed by the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. We develop and then invest in critical electricity network infrastructure, whether on or off-grid. This includes utility concessions, public private partnerships, management contracts, rural electrification programmes, isolated grid systems, off-grid-to-on-grid investments, and utility services companies. Working with governments, multilateral organisations and other investors, we bring flexible, patient capital to the sector. This is matched with considerable industry expertise stemming from experience across the transmission and distribution spectrum. Over time, our work will deliver affordable, reliable power to people and businesses across Africa.

🎉Amari Power Transmission has reached financial close. Amari is now the first independent transmission project (ITP) in Africa to reach financial close, demonstrating how private capital can support the development of critical grid infrastructure. This is a major milestone for the project and a first for the continent. Developed by Gridworks in partnership with UETCL and the Government of Uganda, the project will upgrade capacity at four high-voltage substations on the national grid. This will improve reliability and quality of supply for electricity users, particularly industrial customers, while supporting economic growth and regional power trade. It also marks an important step in opening up transmission to new forms of investment. Independent Transmission Projects offer a practical way to mobilise private sector capital and expertise into transmission infrastructure, which has often struggled to attract funding despite its central role in power systems. We have a number of other transmission projects in development across Africa, helping to expand and strengthen networks to meet the continent's growing demand for electricity. We’re proud to have developed Amari Power Transmission - which this week became the first project of its kind to reach financial close in Africa. Amari is one of several large-scale independent transmission projects (ITPs) we’re developing across the continent. These projects will increase energy access, support economic development, boost cross-border electricity trade and enable the uptake of new power generation. How can we bring private capital into Africa’s grids? 💡 That’s the question Gridworks' Co-Head of Business Development Amol Pinge will be discussing at FMO - Dutch entrepreneurial development bank and Solarplaza’s Future of Energy Conference in Amsterdam this week. Amol’s panel conversation - at 13:45 CET on Wednesday - will explore how to attract investors into transmission and distribution projects, as well as the policy, pricing and partnership frameworks that make grids investable. It is a crucial time for conversations like this, as grid infrastructure is essential for energy security and for the energy transition. Amol will share our perspective on what it actually takes to unlock private finance for this critical part of the system. #Transmission #AfricanEnergy #Solarplaza #FutureofEnergy26 #FMO #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy

This week at the #RENMOZ in Europe Conference, the focus was firmly on strengthening partnerships and accelerating progress in Mozambique’s energy sector. The conference brings together European investors, financiers and technology providers with Mozambican stakeholders to unlock energy opportunities and mobilise investment into a growing pipeline of energy projects. We were pleased to have colleagues from Gridworks on the ground — Amol Pinge, Bruno Batista, and Adel Serhal — meeting with senior leadership from ELECTRICIDADE DE MOÇAMBIQUE, as well as senior officials from the Mozambican Energy Ministry. A key focus of our discussions was the LTEC transmission project that Gridworks is developing in Mozambique — a nationally important US$450m+, 460km initiative aimed at delivering reliable, efficient power and supporting industrial growth. 📢 Join Shaun Githuku, our Co-Head of Business Development, on this all-star panel discussing the future of private sector financing of electricity transmission, and of Independent Transmission Projects in particular. Shaun will tackle these questions and more: - How many lessons from IPPs are applicable to ITP? - What are the main requirements to make ITPs bankable? - How can ITP financiers and developers like Gridworks find common ground with energy ministries and utilities? 📅 18/3/2026 at 12pm (GMT) Log-In details below.
Join us at 12.00 GMT on Wed 18 March for African Energy's online meeting to examine the question: What private financing models for transmission will work in Africa?

Earlier this year, our ESG Director Louiza Kabiru led a team of specialists in Mozambique, as they travelled the length of the 460km transmission line we’re building for our LTEC project. They met with communities living near to the proposed route to understand how they might be affected by the project. This is essential work and forms part of the data collection process for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment and Resettlement Action Plan. It’s an important component of the development of an Independent Transmission Project, one of many that Gridworks is rolling out across Africa. Watch this video with Louiza to find out more ⬇️ *LTEC stands for Linha de Transporte de Energia Chimuara-Nacala. The project will strengthen and increase the reliability of the transmission infrastructure connecting central and northern regions of Mozambique 🇲🇿 #ESG #AfricaEnergy #transmission #electricity

This is good news from our investee company, Anzana Electric Group and Metalex Commodities Inc. to develop electricity infrastructure in Zambia’s North-Western Province as part of the Lobito Corridor development. Strengthening grid connectivity around projects such as the Kazou copper-cobalt mine will boost economic activity, create jobs and support the growth of strategic mineral supply chains that are essential to the global energy transition. Investments in T&D infrastructure like this can also extend the benefits of power access beyond industrial users. By connecting new generation and strengthening the national grid, projects like this have the potential to improve electricity access for surrounding communities and support broader economic development across the region. Congratulations to the teams at Anzana and Metalex.
Anzana Electric Group and Metalex Commodities Inc. are excited to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance electricity infrastructure in Zambia’s North Western Province as part of the Lobito Corridor development. The partnership will support development of a medium voltage network connecting the Kazozu copper cobalt mine to the national grid while expanding reliable electricity access for surrounding communities. #EnergyInfrastructure #LobitoCorridor #CriticalMinerals #EnergyAccess #AfricaEnergy
