Let sleeping dogs lie...
It’s Sleep Awareness Month so we’re shining a light on the need for good quality sleep for dogs. Did you know that just like us, our four-legged friends need restful, uninterrupted sleep to stay healthy and happy? 🐶💤 Here are some more sleep facts about our canine companions:
• Dogs sleep better when they’re sleeping in a secure environment
• Sleep is essential for dogs to manage their emotions.
• Rested dogs learn better, if they have insufficient sleep they can struggle to learn new things.
• Paw twitching, small movements and gentle vocalisations can be signs your dog is in REM sleep (if movements look excessive or unusual, it’s best to check with your vet).
• Dogs are polyphasic sleepers, unlike humans who typically sleep in one long stretch, dogs naturally nap throughout the day in shorter cycles.
• Sleeping positions help with temperature regulations – sometimes they curl up to conserve heat, or stretch out on cool surfaces to help cool them down.
• If your dog is dreaming, let them snooze - even if it seems like they’re having a ‘bad dream’, it’s best to leave them undisturbed, and to naturally wake up.
We know that good sleep sets dogs up for success, from behaviour and training to confidence and emotional well-being. Thanks to our partnership with Slumberdown, part of John Cotton Group Ltd., we receive a donation from the sales of their Paws for Slumber pet bed range. We’re helping more dogs get a good night’s sleep either in our rehoming centres or in their forever homes.
