Medtech companies know what patient empowerment means in practice. Patients are often involved early in product development, helping shape technologies around real needs, experiences and daily realities. But the role of patients does not end there. They should be able to contribute beyond the development of individual products or solutions. With their expertise, patients can help improve decisions across the healthcare ecosystem, including in care, research and policy. That is why we are happy to see one of our members collaborating with the Patient Expert Center. This initiative, created by and for patients, trains patients to turn their lived experience into structured expertise. As Patient Experts, they can bring that expertise into dialogue with healthcare professionals, policymakers, researchers, companies and other stakeholders. "The patient adds a unique perspective to decision-making in the research, development and use of medical technology. As the end user, the patient is the single most important source of information on use, experience and outcomes," says Stefan Gijssels, founder and Chair of the Center.
