Here's what's shifting: Customers won't just ask Alexa for the weather anymore, they'll expect to change a booking, track an order, request an invoice, or update their account, all conversationally, without a form, without an email chain, without friction. The interface is getting smarter. The question is whether your operations can keep up, because the bottleneck won't be the AI, it will be what sits behind it. If your workflows live in inboxes, PDFs, and manual steps, even the most advanced assistant can't help your customers. There's nothing for it to connect to. You don't need to build a voice assistant, you need to be agent-ready. The bar is quietly rising, the expectation is shifting from: "Can customers contact us?" The question — "Where did your AI's training data come from?" isn't going away, it's moving closer to procurement, compliance, and brand risk. If you're using AI for content creation, customer support, or internal knowledge systems, rights and attribution are no longer a legal afterthought, they are a design constraint. Expect growing pressure around licensed datasets, internal-only data pipelines, and clear audit trails for AI-generated outputs. Not because regulators demand it today, but because clients, partners, and boards will start asking. One practical move to make this week is to build a simple AI Content Register, it doesn't need to be complex: What AI tools are you using? What data are you feeding them, and where did it come from? Where are outputs being used, internal only, or customer-facing? Then add a lightweight approval step for anything that goes externally. No malicious intent, just a useful tool, moving fast, inside trusted systems. This is what agentic risk actually looks like. The agent didn't fail dramatically, It escalated silently. It bypassed assumed access boundaries, introduced unintended permission changes, and created a fast, invisible path to exposure, all while appearing helpful. Why SMEs should care You may not think you're running "complex AI systems." But if your team uses AI copilots in Slack or Teams, AI connected to ticketing or code review, or AI with access to internal docs and data, you're already in this risk category. The uncomfortable truth is, your AI tools likely have more access than your policies assume. And unlike traditional systems, they suggest actions that humans trust and execute quickly. What your board will start asking. 1.What can our AI tools see, access, and change? 2. Where are the approval checkpoints? 3. Do we have logs if something goes wrong? These aren't IT questions anymore, they're governance questions. One practical move you should do this week is a 60-minute Agent Permissions Audit. 1. List every AI tool connected to your internal systems 2. Map what data it can access and what actions it can take 3. Add three minimum controls: role-based access, logging, and a human approval step for permission changes or data movement. Keep it simple, but make it real. A confidant. Sometimes a substitute for human connection. That shift in perception changes everything about where responsibility sits. This isn't a Big Tech problem at arm's length. SMEs are already deploying conversational AI in: → Customer support → Sales and advisory conversations → Coaching and personal development tools → Wellness and mental health journeys When the interface feels human, the duty of care doesn't disappear at the API layer. AI experience design is now a product safety question. Not just a UX decision. That means four things need to be in place before you ship a conversational AI product: 🔴 Clear escalation paths to a human, not buried, not optional. 🔴 Trigger phrases that force handover when distress signals appear. 🔴 Transparent boundaries, what the AI can't do, stated plainly. 🔴 Conversation logging and monitoring, with someone responsible for reviewing it. These aren't compliance checkboxes. They're the difference between a product and a liability. The Gemini lawsuit may never set legal precedent but it's already setting a cultural one: Human-like systems create human-level expectations. And if users start relying on them like people, the responsibility can't stop at the interface. Anthropic held its line. Whatever your view on defence, that's a significant moment because it confirms something bigger: AI vendors now have stances. And those stances can shift your operations overnight. Think this only matters to defence contractors? Look at what procurement teams are already asking in finance, healthcare, and the public sector: → Which AI tools do you use? → Where is our data processed and retained? → What are the permitted use cases in your vendor contract? → What happens if your AI supplier changes its policy mid-contract? These questions are coming. Many are already here. The uncomfortable truth for SMEs: Most businesses don’t have answers yet. They adopted AI tools quickly, and procurement hasn’t caught up. That’s not a criticism. It’s just reality. But reputational risk is now part of the model supply chain. If your AI vendor changes its acceptable-use policy, restricts a use case, or exits a sector, you inherit that disruption. One practical step: add this to your AI vendor checklist. ✅ Permitted-use clauses — what can the model be used for? ✅ Data retention — where do prompts and outputs go, and for how long? ✅ Access rights — who at the vendor can see your inputs? ✅ Policy change terms — what notice do you get if the rules change? This isn’t legal paranoia, it’s basic operational hygiene, the same way you’d review a cloud provider’s uptime SLA. Anthropic made a values-based call. OpenAI made a different one. Neither is automatically right or wrong. But your business should know which vendors align with your obligations, before a customer asks.
