Grand Theft Auto 6 is taking a leaf out of Red Dead Redemption 2's book by incorporating one of its most notable features: the honor system. This time, though, Rockstar is putting a unique GTA spin on it. GTA 6's honor system, dubbed the Criminal Profile, is a little more nuanced and is designed to track exactly how Jason and Lucia behave as criminals, instead of simply judging them as good or evil.

The Criminal Profile system was highlighted in IGN's recent GTA 6 preview, with Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson explaining how player behavior can shape the experience. Unlike RDR2, where Honor broadly represents Arthur Morgan's morality, GTA 6's system is focused more specifically on Jason and Lucia's criminal behavior.

The biggest difference between GTA 6 and RDR2's systems is that committing a crime doesn't automatically make your profile worse. Instead, the game appears to care more about the specific circumstances surrounding the crime. A player who robs a store, avoids unnecessary violence, and escapes before the police arrive is seen as a more seasoned or professional criminal. Someone who turns up and stages a bloody massacre is seen as sloppy, and mistakes like that are exactly what can negatively impact your Criminal Profile.

The narrative is such that it makes sense for them to do what they need to do while not drawing unnecessary attention.

"You are playing as criminals on the run," Nelson explains, "but the narrative is such that it makes sense for them to do what they need to do while not drawing unnecessary attention (even though sometimes that happens)." So as fun as it sounds to mindlessly rampage in GTA 6, it appears that your actions will have very real consequences.

This gameplay mechanic could make GTA 6's world feel far more reactive. In previous GTA games, players could create enormous amounts of chaos and simply lie low until their Wanted Status disappears. GTA 6's Criminal Profile system looks like it will encourage players to have a more tactical approach, creating enormous amounts of organized chaos instead.

This system also works alongside the upgraded police response in GTA 6. Police will gather details like your clothing, appearance, weapons, and vehicles into account, so simply ripping an innocent bystander out of their car and driving off into the sunset may not be enough to get the police off your trail.

The other main difference between RDR2 and GTA 6's honor systems is that GTA 6 doesn't appear to encourage you to be 'good.' Instead, it will support different styles of criminal behavior, and players can decide whether they would prefer to be a reckless and violent criminal or a calculated one. If this system manages to work as intended, GTA 6 may demand something of players that the series hasn't before: to really think like a criminal, instead of just acting like one.
