Insights From Creative Director, Josef Fares
"The story is about friendship. Every game we create has a defining theme—going back to Brothers, which was about sorrow, A Way Out focused on trust, and It Takes Two was about collaboration. Split Fiction is about friendship. It follows two strangers who don’t know each other at the start but develop a close bond as the story unfolds. Their written stories will reveal a lot about who they are as individuals.
During A Way Out, I remember thinking, “Why aren’t there any games designed from the start as co-op experiences?” We wanted to create something where co-op isn’t an afterthought but a core design principle. That means unique mechanics and unique characters. There’s still so much to explore creatively with co-op, and while it will always be one of our key focuses, who knows what we’ll do in the future?
Most of the time, we start by defining the story and vision of the game. Then we go all in—our team at Hazelight just goes nuts. It’s like we lose our minds creatively. There’s a certain energy where we stop overthinking and let the passion and creativity take over. If you look at our games, you can feel that passion. We’re like dogs off a leash—we do whatever we want and go mad in the best way possible.
One of the key principles is ensuring that players are constantly communicating. The mechanics need to complement each other, encouraging teamwork and interaction rather than just having each player do their own thing.
It’s a great relationship test! Communication is key—not just in games but in life. Our co-op games aren’t just about jumping in and out of play; they’re designed so that both players have to work together. Unlike many other co-op games that just add a second player to a single-player experience, we focus on creating unique mechanics that require constant teamwork. Good communication leads to strong relationships, and we build that into our games."
