The Bart Simpson Comet was a comet from space that was heading towards Springfield.

After sabotaging Principal Skinner's weather balloon, Bart was sentenced to help Principal Skinner with his astronomy readings. While Skinner went to chase down the weather balloon as it came close to the ground, Bart messed around with Skinner's telescope, spinning it around before looking through it. As he did, he noticed a comet in the night sky. Bart phoned the Springfield Observatory, which credited Bart with discovering a comet and named it the Bart Simpson Comet. When Skinner returned to Bart with the weather balloon, he was horrified that Bart had discovered the comet instead of him.

Bart's discovery of the Bart Simpson Comet made front-page news for The Springfield Shopper and led The Superfriends at Springfield Elementary School to invite Bart to join their ranks. When Database asked Bart if he could show them the comet one night, Bart told them that they could just look out the window to see it. They were shocked at how close the comet was, as it was directly in the path of Springfield. The Superfriends and Bart rushed off to the Springfield Observatory to report the comet, which led to the emergency siren being used...

The townspeople think that Springfield's days are numbered when Bart discovers a comet is heading straight for them. They must then decide who will brave the comet's arrival and who can stay in the Flanders' bomb shelter...

Big Butt Skinner was a giant weather balloon altered by Bart Simpson to resemble Principal Skinner, featuring a sign that read "Hi, I'm Big Butt Skinner." It had the prototype name of Buttzilla.

Springfield Elementary School's Science Week ended with the launch of a weather balloon organized by Principal Skinner, who proudly described it as the school's "most propane-explosion-free science week ever." Students gathered outside the school as Groundskeeper Willie released the balloon while Skinner praised science and encouraged enthusiasm for the event.

The celebration was disrupted when Bart Simpson revealed he had secretly attached a giant caricature of Skinner to the balloon. As it rose into the sky, hidden panels unfolded, showing a huge image of the principal holding a sign reading "Hi, I'm Big Butt Skinner." The students burst into laughter, and after Skinner announced that whoever brought the balloon down would not have to learn fractions, many of the children immediately began throwing rocks at it, but without success. Skinner then ordered Groundskeeper Willie to destroy the balloon with a shotgun, but the attempt also failed, and the balloon continued drifting through the sky...
