Louis Yu shared thisPokémon Pokopia has no charts in it. It's the highest-rated Pokémon game ever (89 on Metacritic), and you never fight anything - there's no battles, no gym, no rival. You play a Ditto whose whole job is making Pokémon comfortable enough to live near you. To pull that off, it leans hard on information design, cleaner than most dashboards I build at work. 𝐒𝐨 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬: → Leveraging on Pre-attentive attributes so you don't have to relearn a legend. → Dynamic filtering uses Recognition over Recall like the same way "Show Relevant Values" vs "Show All Values" in Tableau is. → Not making your users hold the complexity by tapping into the Tesler's Law. What jumped out. What belongs with what. What to look at first. That happens whether you designed for it or not. Video Games have been designing this way for decades and that's essentially the visual language of information. Stephen has done a splendid job introducing the whole concept of Pokemon TCG and even has an interactive mode within it to try your luck opening some packs. #GamesNightViz gives it a 10/10 ⭐ rating 🎮🕹️Louis Yu shared thisI finally published my Pokémon-themed Tableau viz I've been chipping away at for months! Link to viz: https://lnkd.in/g6vqsU2x It started as a mini-project for the Pokémon-themed #GamesNightViz challenge, built on top of a deck-shuffling mechanic I used in a previous viz. But, I missed the challenge deadline and almost let the project stay unfinished forever... I picked it back up and added a ton more features. The viz breaks down the original 3 Pokémon TCG sets, their contents, and the odds of pulling different cards/card types. From there, you can jump into a working pack-opening simulator to actually open packs and compare your real results against the odds, to see how lucky (or unlucky) your pulls were. It's probably the coolest thing I have built in Tableau, even though I had to cut some features along the way (like an achievement system with badges, and a wallet tracker to log how much you've spent on cards). I have been experimenting with a way to trick Tableau into full randomization using the RANDOM() function, but the best I could land on is pseudo-randomization that relies on the user updating a parameter to "re-seed." Every pack that you open in this viz is randomized, but reopening the viz fresh will always give you the same cards in the same order. If you update a parameter value, it seems to force Tableau to refresh the underlying "seed" for RANDOM() to get a completely new series of packs/cards. However, in my testing, this is still deterministic pseudo-randomness depending on the parameter value used. Also, in this viz at least, it seems to rely on the length of the parameter string and not the actual characters in it (still testing!). If anyone has more insight into how the RANDOM() function actually works under the hood in Tableau, I'd love to hear it. It’s a heavy reminder of the thousands of people who have been taken from their families, and the ongoing fight to bring the truth to light. When a person is forcibly disappeared, the goal is making it seem as though they never existed. That’s why data and careful documentation matter so much. Solid records, verified timelines, and case facts are often tools powerful enough to pierce through state silence and demand real accountability. The challenge? Critical data to combat enforced disappearances are hard to gather due to culture of fear and widespread of impunity. A while back, I created short comics to help raise people's awareness about the issue. Collaborating with NGOs such as Amnesty International and International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), I took real cases, and translated them into visual stories. My goal was to make the reality of these cases human, accessible, and engaging. While data gives us the evidence, stories build the empathy needed for change. That feels appropriate because this initiative has always belonged to the community. #DataFamRisingStars is special because it is completely independent of Tableau and Salesforce. The recognition comes from each other. There is no ranking, no competition, and no attempt to decide whose contributions matter most. Everyone selected is celebrated for the impact they are making in their own way. I may have started the initiative, but I am not the reason it has been successful or made such a tremendous impact. The community is. The people who nominate others. The volunteers who help make it happen. The people who amplify new voices, celebrate one another, and continue making #DataFam a place where contributions are noticed and appreciated. Saw this article on The Straits Times about “AI-free” periods for doctors to prevent deskilling. The concern and problem of deskilling is real, and it’s something we need to address thoughtfully. But this doesn’t feel like the right solution. Imagine if we were forced not to use calculators or computers for one month at work every once in a while to keep our math skill sharp. 😅 The better question is: how do we redesign education, training, and workflow so professionals can stay sharp while still leveraging the full power of AI? Maybe the following solutions are more sustainable? ✅ Continuous professional assessment and simulations to keep skills sharp. ✅ Mentorship and peer-to-peer learning to reinforce clinical judgment. ✅ Integrated lifelong learning programs to ensure doctors build expertise alongside advancing technologies. What’s a good product to launch? This came up in my catchup with Steven Yang, as we exchange notes on product management and AI. I think this can apply to anyone thinking of developing a new product, solution or business line. 1. Job to be done Well, a good product will be one that helps customers get the job done and solve any pain points they are currently experiencing. Hence, first thing first is to help to identify this. 2. Market trends One can also look at the mega trends and market environment. For example, if there’s a segment of customers looking to digitise their onboarding during Covid19, there is opportunity there. If there’s news of a massive money laundering scandal, then we can expect a demand in the products that help detect or prevent such cases. 3. Market sizing For any new product, an important step is to size the market in terms of volume and revenue, to see if it’s worth our while to pursue. Some common terms. - TAM (Total Addressable Market): Total global demand for a product. - SAM (Serviceable Addressable Market): The segment within the TAM that is within your reach. - SOM (Serviceable Obtainable Market): The portion of SAM you can realistically capture. 4. Right to win What’s our company's ability to compete and succeed in a chosen market better than competitors? Do we superior capabilities, technology, data or brand? There’s often many shiny new objects / products out there that we can launch but we need to focus on those where we have a right to win.
