Growing API-first companies

About us

Func Ventures is an early-stage venture capital firm that invests in technology companies across South-East Asia and Australia. We match capital with our early access to repeat founders and the vibrant startup communities we have built up over the past 20+ years working across APAC. The future we believe is moving beyond SaaS to platforms-as-a-service and API driven, augmented by IoT. These new technologies will underpin the leading digital businesses and be the building blocks of our increasingly automated future. We are industry agnostic, with our current portfolio consisting of embedded finance, impact tech, and modern city platforms.

🎉 Func Ventures has made its 10th investment — and it's a milestone worth celebrating. Since 2022, we've been scouring Asia-Pacific for the best software building blocks of the AI era. Using our SUPERIOR due diligence framework, we've had the privilege of backing some of the most exceptional founders I've encountered in 20+ years in enterprise software. Investment #10 is Support Fusion — and we couldn't be more excited to back founders Greg and Stephen. Here's the problem they're solving: MSPs (Managed Service Providers) are sitting on a growth opportunity that legacy infrastructure is actively blocking. Integrating ageing ticketing systems into complex, multi-source service contracts is one of the most stubborn friction points in the industry — and it has quietly been a ceiling on new business expansion for years. Support Fusion removes that ceiling. As enterprise AI initiatives accelerate, the demand for multi-source MSP contracts is surging. Companies want flexible, AI-ready service models, and they need their MSP partners to deliver them. Support Fusion's platform makes that possible, turning what was once a blocker into a competitive advantage. Greg and Steve bring exactly the kind of domain depth and founder conviction that our S lens (Solve a Difficult Problem) was designed to identify. They've lived this problem. They've built the solution. And the market timing couldn't be sharper. 10 investments. 3 years. The best is yet to come. 🚀 Welcome to the Func Ventures family, Support Fusion. • Here's my latest thoughts on Agents disruption SaaS... Over the past decade and a half, web APIs have defined how software connects, scales, and compounds. They abstracted complexity and created a common language for systems to talk to one another. The rise of API-first companies such as Twilio, Stripe, and Plaid showed how modular interfaces could turn infrastructure into reusable products. Developers could “call capabilities” as easily as they once imported libraries. This unbundling of monolithic software into smaller, interoperable parts became the foundation for modern SaaS and, ultimately, the programmable economy (click below to continue...) https://lnkd.in/grGASFqp #agenticai #apifirst FrankieOne Prefactor Matt Doughty

  • 📍 Next Tuesday, 16th September at 5pm, I’ll be hosting a VNTR Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾 investor get-together in Chinatown — right in the heart of the city. Join me for a cocktail or iced lemon tea at this chic inner-city venue 🍸🍋 — and if you’re in town attending the Nomad Capitalist event, come by to meet others who are enjoying the Kuala Lumpur lifestyle 🌆. I’ll share what’s happening across the VNTR community, both here in APAC and globally 🌏. At VNTR we are curated by design: this isn’t a public event, but a private circle for qualified investors and top-tier founders. Access means direct connection to deals like this — and to the people building the companies of tomorrow 🚀. 👉 If you’re an investor and would like to be part of this curated circle, you can apply here: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/gjrkHaGD ✨ Looking forward to seeing many of you there! #VNTR #NomadCapitalist

I started investing into API-First companies in 2019 and started my API-First fund Func Ventures in 2022. So fund 2 is now in the planning stages and I am sticking to my “deep and narrow” thesis. I asked Gemini this question … thoughts? “Can API companies move up the stack into agentic ai?” API companies are well-positioned to move into the agentic AI space due to their existing infrastructure and expertise in handling data and integrations. Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can operate autonomously, make decisions, and take actions to achieve specific goals. APIs are crucial for agentic AI as they enable agents to interact with various tools, data sources, and other systems. API companies have the necessary infrastructure, such as API gateways and management systems, to support the communication and data exchange required by agentic AI. They also possess expertise in building and managing integrations, which is essential for enabling agents to interact with different services and platforms. Furthermore, many API companies are already working with AI and machine learning technologies, giving them a head start in developing agentic AI capabilities. Moving into agentic AI can provide API companies with new revenue streams and growth opportunities. They can offer agentic AI solutions to businesses looking to automate complex tasks, improve decision-making, and enhance customer experiences. Additionally, API companies can leverage agentic AI to improve their own operations, such as automating API management and monitoring. However, moving into agentic AI also presents challenges for API companies. It requires a shift in mindset from providing tools for developers to building autonomous systems that can operate independently. It also demands expertise in areas such as AI planning, reasoning, and decision-making. Furthermore, API companies need to address concerns related to security, privacy, and ethical considerations when deploying agentic AI systems. Despite these challenges, the potential benefits of moving into agentic AI are significant. API companies that can successfully navigate this transition will be well-positioned to capitalize on the growing demand for intelligent automation and AI-powered solutions. #agenticAI #APIfirst #vc
