Since its release in 2022, Prime Video's adaptation of Lee Child's Reacher book series has become the definitive action show of the past four years, and as virtually every streaming platform now has its flagship action TV show, Reacher's confirmed 2026 return sets up a five-way streaming showdown. The series' creators have learned from the mistakes of the ill-fated Tom Cruise movie and left surprisingly few differences between the books and TV show's Jack Reacher, with Alan Ritchson perfectly cast as the protagonist whose strength borders on superhuman.

Reacher's success has proven that a good action series with the potential to last for multiple seasons is an excellent addition to the line-up on any streaming platform, which has led to some entertaining rivalries with other action franchises, including Netflix's The Night Agent. However, Amazon Prime has the best "dad show" battle, with Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan also being based on a popular book character called Jack. While it appeared that the Jack Ryan franchise could overtake Reacher, the record-setting Rotten Tomatoes score for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War makes this increasingly unlikely.

While the Jack Ryan TV series appeared to be going from strength to strength, with season 4 concluding the story with a 94% positive critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, the follow-up movie, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War, received some surprising ratings. Critics gave the movie just 44% while audiences had largely the same reaction, with a 42% positive Rotten Tomatoes rating. With scores this low, it is highly unlikely that season 4 of Reacher will not win the "battle of the Jacks."

What Reactions To Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War Are Saying

The movie forms the latest installment in the Jack Ryan franchise, with John Krasinski reprising his role as the iconic character, who is pulled back into the world of politics and espionage when a conspiracy turns personal for his old CIA ally, Greer. While reviews of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War have praised the acting of the cast, particularly from Krasinski, the movie has some major faults that cannot be overlooked.

Roger Ebert reviewer Matt Zoller Seitz was impressed by the way the movie represented the toll that a character's past actions took on him, but gave the movie one star, as this aspect did not compensate for its many low points. Other reviewers felt that the different plot threads were interesting on their own, but did not fit together into a cohesive story. John Nugent of Empire Magazine described Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War as "both unnecessarily complicated and woefully simple."

Reacher's Past 3 Seasons Provide A Strong Foundation For Season 4's Success

Jack Ryan has been rebooted several times, with each actor putting their own spin on the character, with mixed success, while Jack Reacher only had to contend with the failure of Tom Cruise's movies. Alan Ritchson made the role his own, with Reacher succeeding at its biggest challenge, which was giving the famously stoic character more of a voice while still portraying him as a man of few words. With the character perfected, this set the stage for the team to concentrate on the story, and carefully choose which of Child's books to adapt, and in what order.

Child's Jack Reacher books often highlight different facets of their central character, so it made sense to adapt the series out of order to make the story flow more smoothly. With each season of Reacher covering a different book, the first three seasons have provided even viewers who have not read the books with a show that can easily be followed, yet with references to the source material that have pleased fans of the series.

There are currently 31 books in the Jack Reacher series, with 30 full novels and a short story collection. The 31st novel is due out in the Fall of 2026.

Some TV shows take a few episodes or even a season to hit their stride, while Reacher hooked viewers in the first ten minutes and has remained remarkably consistent from then on. Both the second and third seasons have earned an impressive 98% positive critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a good sign for the fourth season, which will adapt Gone Tomorrow. The show's blend of action, twists, and witty one-liners set the fourth season up perfectly, with a winning formula that can be adapted around the source material without feeling repetitive.

Prime Video's New Jack Ryan Movie Was Always A Gamble

The four seasons of the Jack Ryan TV show wove great action scenes and surprising twists into a smartly-written political drama. This format is not always easy to do, yet the series achieved the perfect balance. On the other hand, fitting a complex story that could have taken an entire TV season into one movie would have been a difficult task for any creative team.

With just four seasons planned, season four of the Jack Ryan series ended with Jack planning to take a break, and while a few loose ends were left unresolved, the series finale gave viewers a satisfying farewell. Rebooting the character again was always going to be a gamble, as there would have to be another well-written ending as well as enough of a story to justify adding to the franchise.

Unfortunately, the movie's necessarily fast pace gave it a very different tone from the TV show, which attracted viewers for being a slow-burning political thriller. It is understandable that the movie would need to provide a bigger story, with more explosive scenes and higher stakes, but it sacrificed the show's more grounded feel. This risky creative choice could have paid off, but there was always a chance that it would not, as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War has shown.

2026 Is Huge Year For Action Thrillers, But Reacher Remains Unchallenged

The release of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War and season 3 of The Night Agent were exciting enough for fans of action thrillers, but even these high-profile franchises also had competition. Prime Video released season 2 of Cross, inspired by James Patterson's crime thriller novels, and the Netflix reboot of Man on Fire was released with a 61% positive Rotten Tomatoes rating. Prime Video presented The Terminal List as a Reacher replacement, and while the first season did not impress critics, it was a 94% success with Rotten Tomatoes audiences and season 2 will premiere this year.

While many of these action series have achieved critical acclaim and audience popularity, few have achieved the same level of success as Reacher. Prime Video's best action series includes elements from many genres, but Ritchson's performance is central to its success, as is the pacing that places some brutal action scenes within each episode without having them overshadow the plot. Reacher season 4 is airing in 2026, and is expected to remain the best action show of 2026. The show might still meet a worthy challenger but, like Reacher himself, it has not been beaten yet.
