DC Comics continues to expand beyond the DC Universe, and in one of its best current TV projects, a major Batman villain is being reimagined through a gender swap. While the world waits for Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II and for the DC Universe to share updates on its upcoming Batman movie The Brave and the Bold, the Dark Knight continues exploring new stories and adventures in other media, most notably on TV.
One of those projects is Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated series developed by Bruce Timm and distributed by Prime Video. Batman: Caped Crusader reimagines the world of the Dark Knight inspired by stories from the 1940s and 1960s. As such, Batman: Caped Crusader focuses more on the character’s detective noir elements, going deeper into the characters’ psyche, but without forgetting about action, drama, and suspense. Batman: Caped Crusader, then, follows a young Bruce Wayne (Hamish Linklater) at the beginning of his career as Gotham’s crime-fighter.
Of course, in addition to Batman’s personal struggles, Caped Crusader explores the corruption and crime that plagues Gotham, with the twist of leaving Batman aside sometimes to better explore characters like Clayface, Barbara Gordon, the Penguin, and more. Batman: Caped Crusader premiered in 2024 to great success and critical acclaim, and it’s coming back with a second season on July 31, which will gender-swap a major villain: Mad Hatter.
Batman: Caped Crusader Will Have Its Second Gender-Swapped Villain With Mad Hatter
Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is expected to continue exploring Batman’s criminal underworld in the same style (visual and narrative) and tone as season 1, but it’s bringing new villains into the mix. At the end of Batman: Caped Crusader season 1, the Joker’s presence was teased, and as revealed in the first images of season 2 (via IGN), the Clown Prince of Crime will make his official debut in season 2.
However, among the villains joining Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is Mad Hatter, a scientist who created mind control devices to manipulate the minds of his targets. In the comics and other adaptations, such as the 1960s Batman TV series, Fox’s Gotham, and the Batman: Arkham video games, the Mad Hatter has been portrayed as a man, but Batman: Caped Crusader is gender-swapping the character in season 2.
In the above-mentioned first images of Batman: Caped Crusader season 2, one is from the set of a talk show called Hattie’s Tea Party, with the host being a red-haired woman in a pink suit and hat with light blue details. Batman: Caped Crusader’s Mad Hatter, then, is a woman going by “Hattie” who hosts her own talk show, through which I believe she will use her mind control technology to reach more targets.
The Mad Hatter is the second gender-swapped character in Batman: Caped Crusader, as the first season did the same with the Penguin. Oswalda Cobblepot is a crime boss, pretty much like her male version, and she was voiced by Minnie Driver. Gender-swapping classic Batman villains fits Caped Crusader’s style of reimagining the characters from DC Comics, and they will be joined by other well-known characters.
Batman: Caped Crusader Season 2 Is Introducing Other Reimagined Classic Villains
As mentioned above, Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 will also be the official introduction of the Joker, who, judging by the official look at the character, isn’t the version of the character with clown makeup that everyone knows, and looks like his story will be more personal, darker, and potentially disturbing. Also joining season 2 is Edward Nygma/Riddler, shown with a green suit and a black hat rather than the more flashy costume he usually wears, and Scarecrow.
The Joker, Riddler, and Scarecrow aren’t gender-swapped versions, but they will surely have some differences from their traditional portrayals to not only fit the show’s style but also allow for a deeper exploration of their characters. Batman: Caped Crusader season 2 is on its way to repeating the success of the first season, and, hopefully, it will be even bigger and better.
