Compliance as a catalyst for growth

That’s Annie Gu’s take. And it's one that has empowered her to innovate, lead, and build a deeply rewarding career at Third Bridge. For Annie, Head of Compliance in China, her journey has been about transformation. Over nearly 11 years, she’s evolved her role from a Legal and Compliance Associate to a strategic business partner, all while playing a key role in the company's rebrand and establishing Third Bridge as a leader in the expert network industry.

Starting out at Third Bridge

Technically, Annie’s Third Bridge career didn’t begin at ‘Third Bridge’. Having completed her university education in the UK with a BA in Law from the University of Lincoln and an LLM in International Business and Commercial Law from the University of Manchester, Annie relocated back to China to begin her working life. In Shanghai, she found a job as a Compliance Associate for a local financial services company. Annie was initially drawn to an in-house compliance role because of its focus on a specific industry, which she preferred over the varied and argumentative nature of a traditional law career.

In 2014, Annie was ready for a new challenge and she came across a firm called Cognolink. Intrigued by the company's name and its unique business model, she applied for a role. As a law student, Annie was familiar with consulting style companies but was curious about how Cognolink operated and ‘linked’ experts and clients, providing research services that were a little bit different. As she came to better understand the business, she saw it as the ‘bridge’ between clients and expertise. "The name now we use, Third Bridge, is a much better fit for the services we provide," she says, reflecting on the company's evolution. When the company officially rebranded from Cognolink to Third Bridge in 2016, Annie was deeply involved in the process in China. Handling everything from administrative and logistical tasks like updating the company documents, to obtaining the ‘China Chop’, and communicating with clients to explain the name change and reassure them that their contracts and services would remain valid. “It was a very good opportunity for me to complete these steps myself and better understand the processes required in China,” she notes. This experience was a significant learning opportunity that enabled her to develop her awareness of local and international corporate governance.

Now 11 years into her career, Annie has been promoted multiple times and now holds the title, Head of Compliance for China. This is something that she’s not only proud of, but sees as a significant opportunity “We may not be able to transform the industry overnight, but we can make the rules and set best-in-class standards for ourselves,” she says. Her mission these days is simple: for clients to recognise Third Bridge as the top expert network because of its compliance standards. And she’s bang on track.

A continuous evolution

It’s not just the company’s brand that’s evolved. Annie’s role has transformed throughout her tenure, shifting from a "rule follower" to a " strategic business partner." At the start of her career, her focus was on ensuring strict adherence to policies and regulations. However, since being promoted to Head of Compliance, she now invests her time in making compliance work for the business. "This shift acknowledges that compliance should not act as a bottleneck for the business, but that it needs to be entirely integrated into the business strategy," she explains.

She now works to integrate compliance frameworks into operational processes to help the business achieve its goals and increase revenue. For example, when the sales team in China wanted to explore new services, Annie’s team partnered with them to create new procedures and a simple checklist for sales representatives to ensure compliance. This approach not only enabled the new programs to roll out on time but also added value to the business.

The importance of feedback

Feedback. That’s what Annie relies on to keep propelling her professional growth and the success of her team forward. "The feedback from my leaders, the different functions I partner with and also those in my reporting line is really significant for my progress,” she reflects. Annie believes that listening to others and taking onboard their perspectives is critical if you want to improve continuously and she uses this feedback to reflect on her work and find better solutions.

Not only has feedback jump-started her personal development, she also depends on feedback to help the Compliance team be a better partner for the business. For example, when her team expressed that the compliance rules on paper felt disconnected from real-life situations, Annie worked with the business to set up a workshop using real cases identified by the Compliance audit team. These 45-minute sessions helped colleagues gain insights into how compliance operates in practice and fostered a more collaborative relationship between Compliance and the business. “The more people understand, the more willing they are to raise questions or speak to us directly about challenges they’re facing,” she says “This two-way engagement really benefits our active partnership.” Alongside qualitative feedback, Annie also uses data to continuously improve, identifying areas where teams might need additional training so Third Bridge can continue to uphold the highest standards possible.

Defining success

For Annie, success is not personal, but a collective achievement. She defines it as "business success" adding that one of the greatest measures of success is seeing the internal team’s achievements and ultimately “earning the client’s trust as well.” Her aspiration for the Compliance team is to set a new industry standard, where Third Bridge is recognized as the leading expert network because of its strong compliance practices.

An example of this collective success in action came during what she recalls as one of her proudest Third Bridge moments to date, establishing "Compliance Week" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Annie’s goal was clear. To change the internal perception of Compliance being the “bad cop” who enforced rules to being seen as an enabler for growth, by providing frameworks to help the team reach more clients and more experts. With everyone working from home, the online event included different training sections with role-playing and online social parties. This initiative helped the team understand the "why" behind the rules and fostered a closer relationship with other business teams. Like most things in Annie’s career, Compliance Week at Third Bridge has evolved to take different forms in a hybrid working world, but the company’s commitment to reinforcing the importance of compliance annually remains. A legacy Annie can surely be proud of.

Life outside of Third Bridge

Annie finds her escape from the daily grind in the water. "I really enjoy swimming," she says, explaining how a good swim helps her decompress. "When you jump into the swimming pool, you forget everything." For Annie it's a healthy way to disconnect from work and recharge.

Annie is also a proud mother to her three-year-old daughter who is a constant source of joy. "When I get off work and arrive home, she’ll rush up to me desperate for us to play together,” she says with a laugh, highlighting the reality of balancing a demanding career with being a mom. Her daughter's impending start at kindergarten is a big milestone, and Annie hopes she will enjoy the new experience.
