No Rest for the Wicked Combat and Gameplay

No Rest for the Wicked Gameplay

No Rest for the Wicked offers a top-down perspective for players. Upon starting the game, players have the opportunity to create their own unique character. In No Rest for the Wicked, players will amass an assortment of weapons, which are categorized into various rarities. Additionally, each weapon possesses its own distinct set of moves, and they can be augmented with runes to amplify their combat prowess. Gameplay also shows its similarity to a Soulslike game where actions such as striking an enemy, parrying, blocking, and dodging consume stamina, as well as weight management and equipping gear that heavily affects how fast you can move and how much stamina is consumed when dodging incoming enemy attacks.

gameplay 1 no rest for the wicked wiki guide 300pxgameplay 2 no rest for the wicked wiki guide 300px

No Rest for the Wicked introduces "Focus" a combat meter or mechanic that gradually accumulates when in combat, enabling players to execute unique skills or moves upon a certain amount of Focus is attained. Just like any Soulslike game (but with a twist), if a player dies, they will respawn at the nearest Cerim Whisper location, health is replenished, enemies that have been killed will remain dead, injured enemies will not recover health, and equipped gear will deteriorate more. Players will acquire attribute points when they level up which can be used to increase the level of the different character stats such as Health, Strength, Stamina, Dexterity, Faith, Intelligence, and Focus.

The main settlement of the game is the settlement of Sacrament, a city that will also change in various aspects as the player progresses the story and completes different side quests. It also has a touch of life-simulation elements where the player can purchase and decorate their own house, collect resources to craft equipment, upgrade them, and cook dishes, as well as fishing and farming. It is also mentioned that upon beating the main campaign, players will unlock endgame content called "Cerim Crucible", a game mode where players can fight and test their skills against substantial enemies.

Yes, No Rest for the Wicked offers the option for both 4-player cooperative multiplayer and player-versus-player competitive multiplayer modes.

No Rest for the Wicked Story & Setting

From Moon Studios, the award-winning developers of Ori and the Blind Forest and Ori and the Will of the Wisps comes No Rest for the Wicked, a visceral, precision Action RPG set to reinvent the genre. The year is 841 – King Harol is dead. As word of his death echoes throughout the kingdom, the crown passes to his arrogant, yet untested son Magnus.

Even worse, the Pestilence, an unholy plague not seen for a thousand years, has returned. It sweeps across the land, corrupting everything and everyone it touches. Madrigal Seline, a ruthlessly ambitious figure in the church, sees the Pestilence as a chance to prove herself in the eyes of her god. These forces converge on the backwater Isola Sacra, where rebel groups and the provincial government fight for control amid the isle’s crumbling ruins.

story setting 1 no rest for the wicked wiki guidestory setting 2 no rest for the wicked wiki guide

You are a Cerim – a member of a group of mystical holy warriors imbued with remarkable powers and sworn to defeat the Pestilence at any cost. But the task will prove increasingly challenging as you become entangled in the people’s plight and the vast political struggle of this downtrodden land. Chaos will pull you in every direction as you seek to cleanse the land of wickedness and shape the kingdom’s fate.

Create your own Character and Realm

No Rest for the Wicked features Character Creation where players can construct their own character, it's great to see some variety of options that you can select when creating your character such as selecting your gender, facial structure, manipulating some facial features, and more. However, it is not as intricate as other games that have the feature but with that being said, it is nice to have the option of creating your character. Players will then be able to create their own realm that can be customized and shared with up to three players online—other unique features for creating a unique Realm will be added once more information is available.

When it comes to loot, items such as resources that you pick up from the ground are fixed, however, items that drop from slain enemies and chests are random in each playthrough. Players will acquire different rarities of weapons and armor pieces such as common, rare, cursed, and unique. These will also have different values, stats, and even skills which makes it unique for each player. Other items are in fact static such as items that can be purchased from merchants and unique boss drops such as boss weapons and materials.

Variety of Weapons and Skills

"No Rest for the Wicked" offers a wide variety of weapons for players to choose from, each with its own unique moves and skills. From Dual Daggers, single-handed swords, claymores, bows, and staves. Since the game has randomized loot, some players might approach it in a negative way as the weapon that they feel most comfortable using might be the one that they get at the start of the game, however, in our perspective, we found it to be quite interesting as it forces the player to try out different weapons allowing one to learn how to use each weapon and work with what they currently have.

What is The Breach?

The Breach is an upcoming update in No Rest for the Wicked, scheduled to launch on April 30, 2025. This update will introduce additional content, including expanded storylines, fresh zones, new enemies and bosses encounters, a revamped equipment system, and quality-of-life and gameplay enhancements. The upcoming Breach update also represents the biggest content update in No Rest for the Wicked.

The Story Continues...

The Breach will feature content that will continue the story shortly after Ellsworth's return to the Sacrament. The story goes deeper into the relationship between Ellsworth and his daughter, Odessa, revealing more of their restrained interactions. Players will continue to play as a holy warrior of the Cerim, a group of warriors blessed with powers to defeat the Pestilence. The Breach will also introduce additional NPCs and Merchants to interact with, a settlement far away from the Sacrament, and new storylines that will dig deeper into the past and the story of Madrigal Seline and her plans to liberate the lost city of Caylen.

Campaign and Replayability

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 19

In No Rest for the Wicked, the game's story can be completed by doing a full run of the Campaign. This includes the story quests that will introduce different bosses, challenges, and features of the game. Once the player completes a full run, a new questline will be unlocked, changing the premise of the game and the environment. This new questline is called Spilled Blood, wherein all the areas within Isola Sacra can become infected by the Pestilence. For the players, this will mean fighting enemies in areas that were previously secured and a new mechanic that will require you to stop the spread of the Pestilence, which will ultimately lead to a boss fight. Once this boss is summoned and defeated, the zone will become cleansed of the Pestilence once again.

Hardcore Characters

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 17the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 18

The Breach will feature a new option for players to create characters with the Hardcore mode. The Hardcore mode will transform your gameplay into a permanent death; a single-run that will only give you one chance to complete a run. Should a Hardcore character die, they will get downgraded into a regular character, and can only be played on the regular mode.

Isola Sacra Expanded

Isola Sacra has gotten bigger with new Locations and enemy encounters in the Lowland Meadows and Marin Woods. The Lowland Meadows is located southeast of the Sacrament, while the Marin Woods is accessed through the Sacrament's northwestern gate. Players can explore new zones and overcome new challenges in these new Locations, doubling the size of the current Isola Sacra.

The Lowland Meadows and Marin Woods will also introduce the Harvesters faction, secret areas, including new NPCs such as Odessa's godmother to give players a chance to explore the game lore and the important characters' history beneath the surface level. With new locations also come new enemy types and boss types. Introducing 4 new campaign bosses, 9 new plague bosses, and 2 new enemy factions.

Torn Resources

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 9

After completing the story campaign in No Rest for the Wicked, you can now return to the previous areas where you will encounter enemies that you have never encountered before in such areas. These enemies can also drop a new type of item, known as Torn Resources. Torn Resources is exclusive in the Spilled Blood campaign that are burned at any fire to increase the challenge within the infected area. What this does it to increase the difficulty in the area plagued with Pestilence to obtain more and rare loot. These items can only be obtained by defeating enemies within the Pestilence area.

Pestilence Spread

The Pestilence can take over any zone now, the area will be covered by the Pestilence Plague. Pestilence Spread is represented by the bar in the middle of your screen showing the threat posed by the Pestilence. The spread can be reduced by effectively taking down the enemies within the infected area. When this meter is depleted, you will need to overcome one more challenge, the Plague Boss.

pestilence spread homepage norestforthewicked wiki guide 500px

The Plague Boss is summoned at the end of the Pestilence Spread, or when the meter is fully depleted. This is the final obstacle that you need to defeat in order to cleanse the infected area of the Pestilence. The Plague Bosses are varients of bosses that you have already encountered through story progression or side quests. Defeat the Plague boss to clear the area of Pestilence and to obtain several loot.

What's New in No Rest for the Wicked: The Breach

New Weapon Archetypes

Aside from adding new Weapons, Runes, and Armor Sets, The Breach Update also introduces 2 new weapon Archetypes, the Gauntlets and Wands, effectively expanding the Equipment and Build options.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 20

The Gauntlets will introduce new moves such as Drop Kick, Tremor Wave, and will primarily involve using the fists to inflict damage to enemies. The mechanics are similar to the Double Daggers, making it easy to wield for Double Dagger users. Although it has a shorter range compared to the Double Daggers, the Gauntlets have access to powerful range ruin spells to help you with enemies farther away.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 21

On the other hand, Wands rely on using spells with Focus, which require effective resource management to stay effective in combat. It offers a one-handed spell-casting option, this allows you to use alongside the shield. It works similarly to the Staff where it scales with Intelligence, and provides additional rune spells that help you cast spells quicker.

New Locations in The Breach

Marin Woods is one of the new locations that you can explore in No Rest for the Wicked located north of Sacrament, you can reach this area simply by exiting the northern gate of Sacrament. This area is a beautiful and majestic zone that has fallen into the effects of the blight. The areas are filled with numerous enemies that will test your mettle and explore the areas in creative ways to advance.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 5

As you explore Marin Woods, you will discover a settlement known as the Marin Village. Although the Marin Village counts as a second safe area, like Sacrament, there is a limit of things you can do here. Such as, you will not be able to purchase a home and you will not be able to fast travel to this location. Inside this settlement, you will meet new characters, including Odessa's godmother, Irmgard, and Merchants that offer new services, and sell items different from the ones that you can get at the Sacrament. Such as Animal bones, making it easier for you to upgrade your weapons without having to search for animals to fight to obtain these items. However, even though Marin Village has a blacksmith, he can only help you repair your weapons and not upgrade them, you will need to head back to Sacrament if you wish to upgrade your weapons.

Here are some of the enemies that you can encounter in Marin Woods:

  • Balak Taw
  • Stalking Jay
  • Heavy Feather

The Lowland Meadows is a lush zone filled with rich herbs and greenery that is located south of Sacrament, you can reach this area by exiting through the southern gate of Sacrament.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 4

Just like in Marin Woods, Lowland Meadows will also introduce new characters, enemies, and a storyline. Here are some of the enemies that you can encounter in Lowland Meadows:

  • Copse Treader
  • Timber Wight
  • Wormwood Wretches
  • Limseed Archers
  • Rust Reavers

Character Builds and Equipment Theorycrafting

New Gear Drop System

The Breach update will replace the Tier Drop system with a feature that will consider the Player, Area, and Enemy level into account by scaling gear or Equipment drops. This change aims to simplify the drop system that will allow gears to drop at different areas, with a more suitable level, giving players more varied gear choices towards the end of their playthroughs. This change also aims to solve issues that often result in discarding obtained gear that are no longer suitable for your character, due to it having low stats.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 13

Equipment Enchantments with the Fallen Ember

Equipment Enchantments are modifiers that can affect the player stats in combat such as Damage output, Focus Gain, Movement Speed, Stamina consumption, Health Gain, and more. In The Breach update, it will introduce a new use for the Fallen Ember. The Fallen Ember is an existing item used to re-spec your character, and it can now be used to add and replace Enchantments for your gear, making Fallen Embers more valuable than ever. Equipment can have up to 5 Enchantments.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 12

Masterworks Rarity

The Masterworks is the latest and highest equipment rarity in No Rest for the Wicked. The Masterworks is obtained through infusing gear with the maximum allowable Gems. For example, a Plate Helmet can have up to 4 gems, and slotting 4 gems into it will transform this item into a Masterwork.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 15

Each gem provides different effects, depending on where they will be infused. A Chipped Sapphire grants additional Cold Damage when infused into a Weapon, while the same gem will increase cold Resistance when infused into a Leg Armor.

Beginning with a New Character

In order to experience the new content, you will need to start with a fresh, new character. That being said, your previously saved files will still be there and remain as your legacy saved files. According to Moon Studios, they chose this method to proceed with the new update due to the size of the update. They recommended starting a fresh playthrough is the best way to experience all the new content.

Reworks and Improvements in No Rest for the Wicked The Breach

Locations Rework

Alongside the new locations, the current locations have also been reworked with new areas to explore. Specifically, the Nameless Pass will have additional zones that can be explored to tell the story of the forces of the mainland, Isola Sacra.

the breach homepage no rest for the wicked wiki guide 10

Food Systems Rework

The cooldown when food has been consumed has been removed, but now is replaced with a hunger limit. Which means you can only consume a limited number of food items in combat, which can also be increased. You can check the background of the food icon to determine the number of times you can consume food in combat, the background will be completely grey once you have reached the limit. This makes you more mindful with what you consume to gain the buffs, and how you approach combat all together.

Teleporting Via Whisper Stone

You can now have a Whisper Stone in your house to make it easier to return home to restock on supplies ot putting away resources obtained while on exploration. If you have multiple houses, you can teleport between them through Whisper Stones.

teleport whisper stone homepage norestforthewicked wiki guide 500px

Shields Rework

Shields in No Rest for the Wicked have been reworked by adding the Poise and Stagger system. Shields are now based on these 2 stats, instead of draining Stamina. Each shield archetype will also feature a unique feel that will make it distinguishable from other shields. Shields are ideally paired with a One-Handed Weapon like Straight Swords.

Danger Levels

While exploring, you can now see the danger levels of the area on the upper right hand corner of the screen, just below the location name. This helps you make better judgement if you are ready to or if you should explore the area depending on the danger levels.

danger levels homepage norestforthewicked wiki guide 500px

Item Management

Each item or resource can now be stacked up to 99 inside your chest in your house, while being able to stack the previous amount on you. This makes it easier as you wont have to obtain multiple chests to contain multiple stacks of the same items.

Project Wait Times

Project wait times can now be reduced significantly by providing the project workers with items such as food, materials, or ingredients as part of your contribution. Each project will require a different item at different amounts, so as long as you have the required materials, it will make rebuilding Sacrament much quicker for you.

The Crucible Patch Is Out Now

The Cerim Crucible gets a revamp and now features a repeatable roguelite dungeon. With the update, the number of randomized chambers within the Cerim Crucible have been tripled and now comes with a whole new art theme, new vendor, and a new gameplay system called Echoes. While inside the Crucible, players can kill enemies to obtain a new resource called Traces. This item is used to activate a randomized set of Echoes available to them. The Echoes will provide various effects and conditions that will persist in your current run and allow players to create a build unique to them.

The New Cerim Crucible Vendor: Seneschal

crucible patch notes no rest for the wicked wiki guide 2 min

The Seneschal is an ancient being full of mystery. They can be found in the deep, underground area of the Crucible and offers services to players when given Gloamseed. The Seneschal sells refined resources, Exalt Weapons, and unlock additional features within the Crucible by feeding it with more Gloamseed.

New Enemy Faction: The Gloam

The Gloam are a brand new group of enemies that can be found inside the Crucible - and in later Updates they are expected to appear in the overworld as well.

The Gloam are lost souls who became infected by the Pestilence within the deep, dank caves throughout Sacra. Some got lost, trapped underground, or buried alive – but all of them ended up glowing with a kind of corrupt bioluminescence, similar to the algae and fungi that bloom within those same caves.

crucible patch notes no rest for the wicked wiki guide 3 min

As part of the efforts to make the Cerim Crucible easily accessible, the developers made some changes to the quest, so it opens up sooner during the adventure. Players can enter the Cerim Crucible after completing the "Spoken & Unspoken" quest with Elsa, as soon as the player has arrived in Sacrament and completed the first campaign quest.

Because of this change, players may find that the quest progression for "Spoken & Unspoken" has reset with this Update. This is intentional as the developers stated that they want everyone to experience the new flow of the Crucible organically, including important tutorials; and the natural way to do this is to start the quest over from the beginning. No other changes will affect your character- all gear, stats, and quest progression should remain the same.

Major Performance Updates

The Crucible Update in No Rest for the Wicked brings even more improvements and performance updates:

  • CPU performance improvements
  • Smoother area transitions
  • Cinematics polish
  • Memory optimization
  • Hundreds of fixes and improvements!

Steam Deck Verification

No Rest for the Wicked is now Steam Deck Verified!

More to Come

According to the developers, they will continue working on the game to work on new content and features. They are expected to drop an updated Early Access Road Map in the coming days. They are working on making new statues available to unlock in the Atrium to create more unique challenges, and also brand-new bosses. They are actively working on this additional content.

All New Cerim Crucible: Echoes

The Echoes is a new randomized system that creates a combination of buffs and effects that will affect your current run. There are over 200+ Echoes that can be activated by spending Traces. Traces is a new resource that can be obtained from enemies found within the Crucible. Upon death, all enemies within the Crucible will now drop this resource, and you can spend your collected Traces to activate preferred Echoes and pull up the Menu at any time.

The Echoes will affect various player properties like Equipment and Player Stats by providing additional attack speed, movement speed, increased damage, boosted defense, and more.

You will get a selection of 4 Echoes to choose from, and you can re-roll the current one for a fee. The cost of Echoes varies from 20 to 40 Traces. The buffs and effects will only persist in your current run and will not carry over to your next attempt.

New Features and Content

Exalted Gear

Aside from being an ancient being, the Seneschal also boosts the players' items with a new system - by upgrading them to the status of Exalted. This is a permanent change that raises stats and improves Enchantments of the equipment. In effect, the Cerim will be rewarded more with frequent runs and these effects will carry over to the rest of the adventure, which makes their items more powerful than ever. This upgrade system is offered by the Seneschal, a new NPC that can be located in the deep, underground of the Crucible.

Extended Regions

Some regions of the Overworld like Black Trench and the Nameless Pass were expanded. There are additional secrets and surprises for players to find and explore in these 2 areas.

New Combat Enhancements: Freeze & Shatter, Rip & Tear

Combat is improved by adding effects. Enemies will now explode from fireballs, shatter from a freezing attack, or smash them to pieces with heavy weapons!

As our most ambitious game to date, we know that we will need your feedback to help us fine tune and build all of Wicked’s various systems and upcoming features into the best they can possibly be.” - Official Steam Page

What is the Difference from the Full Version from EA?

  • Multiplayer: 4 player co-op
  • Multiplayer: PVP
  • Expanded story content and chapters
  • Additional map regions
  • Farming
  • More weapons, armor, rare items, and gear
  • New enemies and bosses

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

  • "A rich first chapter of the narrative campaign
  • Additional quests that reveal more about the world and its inhabitants
  • Intense boss battles against plague-ridden creatures
  • A large variety of weapons, armor, skills, and crafting options
  • Gear can be upgraded, enchanted, runed and gem-ed to create your ideal character build
  • Purchasing and furnishing of a modifiable home

  • Replayable Cerim Crucible dungeon"

- Official Steam Page

How Long will the Game be in Early Access?

“The feature roadmap shown on this page is the main outline for Early Access. We're excited about the road ahead, and we'd love to receive your suggestions and feedback. While we have an idea of how long Early Access development should be, this may change based on feedback and the desire to reach the Moon level of quality. We’ll be sharing updates along the way.” - Official Steam Page

Will the Game be priced differently During and After EA?

“We are planning on a discounted price during Early Access that will then increase once the game hits 1.0 / leaves Early Access. If you purchase during Early Access, you will not need to make an additional purchase at 1.0 release.” - Official Steam Page

No Rest for the Wicked EA Roadmap

Moon Studios recently revealed that their upcoming ARRPG, No Rest For the Wicked, will be entering Early Access on Steam on April 18th, 2024. This highly anticipated game appears to blend elements from loot-driven titles like Diablo and combat-focused ARPGs such as Dark Souls. While the game will eventually be available on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, its full launch will occur at a later date. Although an exact release schedule has not been announced, it is reasonable to expect the game to arrive towards the end of this year or early in the following spring. The Early Access Roadmap for "No Rest for the Wicked" are divided into different updates upon its Early Access launch, one of them being Online Coop and PvP mode in its first update, a new area called The Breach on its second update, and more features in succeeding updates.
