Mark Jansen heeft dit gerepostReply to a post and good perspective from Marcel van Oost on the tensions around the transition from iDEAL to Wero. I have a more nuanced view on this. Some of the concerns raised by PSPs like Adyen, Mollie, and others are valid. The move from iDEAL to Wero entails two major changes: 1. Built-in buyer protection (disputes!) on Wero inevitably changes the risk model and underlying economics of the payment method. 2. The economics of Wero include a variable fee (unlike iDEAL which only charges a fixed fee) Both of these are topics that need to be addressed thoughtfully to avoid unintended consequences for merchants and PSPs. At the same time, it’s worth taking a step back and thinking about Wero and European payments landscape holistically through both a consumer and a merchant lens: 1. Wero represents a rare, coordinated effort toward a historical, pan-European payment scheme. In a market that’s historically been fragmented, that kind of ambition matters. 2. The economic models of local payment methods like iDEAL (or Girocard!) do not allow for any meaningful and sustained product development. Scale matters. 3. Stronger consumer protection is not a bad thing. Cards have it built in and Wero just matches it. It does serve to increase consumer trust – one of the reasons card payments scaled so successfully across borders is precisely because consumers felt protected. If Wero can bring similar confidence to account-to-account payments, that’s a meaningful step forward for Europe’s payments ecosystem. I am a strong believer in the power of competition, building great products for merchants and consumers, and giving Europe more choice in the technology it uses. Wero is a unique chance to contribute to all three. We’re already seeing traction – single-digit percentage share of wallet (after 3 months!!!), hundreds of thousands of euros in transactions, 100s of merchants live on the Stripe platform. Wero is getting real – in the hands of consumers and merchants. Now, how do we proceed? I strongly agree with my colleagues at Adyen & Mollie that we need to: • Continue to refine dispute processes so they’re efficient and predictable for PSPs and merchants – we believe there’s a lot of improvement to be done here, • Ensure risk is allocated fairly across the ecosystem, • Work closely with @EPI to address open questions before scale amplifies them. Curious to hear how others in the ecosystem are thinking about this. Original post: https://lnkd.in/eQYK4WwZMark Jansen heeft dit gerepostWero was supposed to unify 🇪🇺 Europe’s payments. Instead, it’s already causing serious tension across the industry. Here's whats happening: Tensions are rising around Wero, the European payment system set to replace iDeal in The Netherlands 🇳🇱 Payment service providers warn that its rollout could lead to higher costs, longer dispute processes, and increased fraud risk, while some are already promoting alternatives outside the Wero ecosystem 🤯 Recent discussions between Wero representatives and key industry players, including Adyen, Mollie, and Buckaroo, focused heavily on one issue: 𝗯𝘂𝘆𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Under Wero, consumers gain stronger rights to dispute transactions, similar to credit card protections. While this improves consumer safety compared to iDeal, payment firms argue it introduces significant risks. Transactions can be challenged weeks after completion, shifting responsibility beyond the retailer to payment providers if merchants fail to respond. This creates new credit risks. Providers may need stricter onboarding and due diligence, potentially excluding high-risk sectors. As a result, Wero is unlikely to be a simple “one-click activation” for merchants, and will likely come with higher fees. Retailers share these concerns. They fear increased payment costs and delayed payouts, as providers may hold reserves to cover potential disputes. Despite the friction, the transition is already underway. iDeal will be phased out by the end of 2027, after being transferred by Dutch banks to the European Payments Initiative (EPI Company), which is building Wero as a pan-European standard. Wero is already live in countries like Belgium, France, and Germany, with around 50 million users. Wero sees its dispute system as a key innovation that will boost consumer trust in online payments. Conflicts are intended to be resolved within its platform, with payment providers stepping in when necessary—including in cases of merchant bankruptcy. Still, industry groups argue the transition is being rushed. Dutch industry association VBIN for example launched an alternative last week called “Pay by Bank,” a modern version of bank transfers that promises low costs and instant payments. So much for “unifying” Europe’s payments… 🤣 Curious how you see this playing out! Source/more info (Dutch article): https://lnkd.in/d5UF3FSk Find this helpful? Mark Jansen heeft dit gerepostMark Jansen heeft dit gerepostWe're hiring! This is the greatest time in history to work in communications: the going direct, the just-do-things energy, the returns to good judgment. I’m biased but Stripe is one of the best places to practice this, working alongside many of the greatest companies and entrepreneurs of our age. What it means to have a career in comms has changed. Less need for fluency in arcana (oh, those days when comms Twitter raged over the choreography of embargoes). More premium on high agency, taste, and understanding how businesses actually work. Great people from different backgrounds (from comms pros to former founders and product managers) are having the time of their lives in Stripe comms. We’re looking for a few more. You’ll get to work with the best, teach and learn in equal measure, and create things that inflect economic growth. For more, and how to apply, read on:

Mark Jansen heeft dit gedeeld2025 has been a strong year for the internet economy. Businesses on Stripe processed USD$1.9 trillion last year—1.6% of global GDP. And the 2025 cohort of startups is our fastest-growing ever. Over the last few years, the country-by-country expansion model has melted away, especially for AI companies. And try to come up with possible solutions. Work together and make the bridge to the government smaller. Thanks guys for organizing. Highly appreciated. And cool I could tell something about Twin.

Just back from Google’s Anti-Scams & Fraud Summit in Dublin-an event that blended real-world insights with practical momentum, and didn’t shy away from the tough stuff. Across panels and keynotes from leaders in tech, finance, policy, and advocacy, one message came through clearly: ⚠️The stigma facing scam victims is still a massive barrier. As Matthew Niblett from Which? noted, many victims say they “can handle it themselves”—but beneath that is often shame. 💬 Over 50% of victims don’t report. 💬 90% don’t even know where to report. 💬 And those who do are often met with judgment or passed from one agency to another. Victims need support, not skepticism, and a system that works with them, not against them. Because reporting is a pivotal means of gathering the data we need to improve detection, prevention, and policy responses-it must be made easy, safe, and stigma-free. 🔹 The ShieldUp! workshop showed how behavioral science + game design can shift how users detect manipulation. Excited to see it roll out in the UK and Ireland—well-designed prevention matters. For me, the most powerful moment was hearing from activist Cecilie Fjellhøy, whose story made the human cost of scams impossible to ignore. She reminds us that those with lived experience aren’t just victims-they’re experts, and their voices must be central to designing real solutions. With the right minds in the room and a shared sense of purpose, we’re closer than ever to turning ideas into impact. Big win for the Keyfactor team in this new CIO Online piece by the always-insightful Mary Branscombe. This article tackles one of the most urgent — and often overlooked — challenges in enterprise cybersecurity: the shift to ultra-short TLS certificate lifespans and what it means for IT teams, infrastructure, and leadership. A credible business case for comms or napkin-maths? "He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lampposts—for support rather than illumination." THanks Sharon O'Dea for this great article - the dodgy ROI calculation hurts us all. If we want to influence, we need to use their language and have business acumen. Put forward a business case. Not use some BS random productivity calculation for ROI that a CFO will laugh at us for. Building on Sharon's discussion, a credible business case covers: 💥What's the problem? - Why is it a problem? - What's the measurable business impact? (I love Sharon's suggestions of what to look at) 💥What is the solution? - What does it look like? - How much will it cost in time, money and resources? 💥 Why does this make business sense? - What are the costs (including risks) of doing nothing? - What are the measurable outcomes of fixing it? - When should they be able to notice the difference? - Why is the spend more important than other projects (diplomacy hats people!) Enjoy reading her article. I did! 🤓 Monique
